Everything in the movie is actually based on things that actually happened. The motorcycle jump was based on Evel Knieval going to the Tale of The Cock and getting drunk and making a jump on the golf course and he crashed.
If That 70's Show never existed I'd say that this would make a good tv series. The film is something of a frustration and feels like a clip show from a series that unless you were a regular viewer these scenes would make no sense. It becomes a series of WTF moments,especially when Gary is suddenly arrested. We are given no further information, he is released, and the story moves on. I like the film a lot,especially the characters of Alana and Gary, both look as if they had been teleported from the 70's. Hopefully when it is released on blu-ray it will have some good bonus material.

@@calzonetrash Maybe calling it garbage is too harsh. I’m glad you loved it and got more out of it than I did. But to put it plainly, the movie did absolutely nothing for me. I kept waiting for it to kick into gear, but it never did. I don’t have a problem with meandering hangout movies just as long there’s something interesting to hear and see. There were moments like that in some scenes, but they never went further than a moment. Characters and plot lines would end never to be seen again. Every scene was forgotten as soon as the next scene began. For example, Gary being arrested for murder, and then summarily being released a minute later. What was the point of that? Sean Penn and Tom Waits show up in a couple of scenes that go nowhere and then are seen no more. And wouldn’t you have loved to see the look on Jon Peter’s face when he discovers what Lana and Gary have done to his bedroom? Yeah, me too, but we don’t get that. Instead we get Peters trying to pick up a couple of women by asking them if they like peanut butter sandwiches? Then he’s gone, to be seen no more as if his part added nothing to the movie. And like Pen and Waits, it added very little. You could edit their parts out and it would not effect at all how the movie looked and ended. And without them the movie would still be a 2 hour slog where nothing of consequence is done or said. It was just a dull movie.
@@firewithfire848 Perfectly understandable- similar to Once upon a time in Hollywood, i think this is one that i won’t enjoy outside of theatres as much as in. For me, the movie was a giddy and loving recreation of a beautiful era, and the “story” is merely a backdrop for alana and gary. I loved the two characters and the connection between them. Definitely not a movie for everyone, but I wish instead of people calling it shit, we could realize that it’s just not to everyone’s liking
