    I’m about 40 min away from this aquarium and there’s nothing like it. I recently did their “Behind The Seas” tour and got within twenty feet of these beauties. For those of you saying they should be in the wild, I get where you’re coming from, but these whale sharks are living healthy and happy in a massive, realistic tank with great healthcare. The GA Aquarium is one of the best captive places in the world for them to live. So little is known about whale sharks and the three or four they have have contributed to a bulk of what humanity knows about them. From what I remember from the tour, these whale sharks are over a hundred years old.
    A shout-out to this amazing aquarium - you’ve given me 16 years of happiness and contributed to my love of the oceans. I’ve made so many wonderful memories within your beautiful walls. Your dedication to science and the environment has made so much difference in the world. All my love!

      One way I find it easy to remember if this is a shark or a whale is that its called whale SHARK, not shark WHALE. the type is placed before the species, like tiger shark or great white shark. also with whales, Beluga whale or humpback whale. the type is almost always before the species name. so the whale shark is not a whale but is actually a gigantic filter feeding carpet shark.

      These animals were rescued from a fish market. The rescue vets on sight saw that they had not only a horrid chronic infection, but multiple physical injuries that would not allow them to travel for their food as they would in the wild.
      Sanctuaries and sea pens do not work for whale sharks not only as there aren’t any functional sea pens or current marine life sanctuaries that have a containment area large enough to comfortably house these animals by far, but them being in a chronic state of poor health and generally in a special needs condition they needed daily routine care.
      That so why the people who initially rescued these animals paired with the AZA ( a non profit organization that turns zoos and aquariums from animal exploitation to non profits centered in research, rescue, and conservation) and arranged for georgia aquarium to custom make a habitat for special needs whale sharks.
      In fact not only is it the largest single open ocean aquatic habitat at around the same size as the play area of a professional league football field, it is also equipped with life support systems and a specifically chosen care team that are not only keeping these rescues as healthy as they can, but also gathering extremely vital research for saving future whale sharks in the future. In fact what they are doing here may be the key to finally understanding how to completely rehab these animals so that future generations of the animals we abuse can have a full second chance, but until then this is a hell of a good alternative.

      Hey there, all whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium are rescued from the shark fin soup trade in parts of Asia. Their whale sharks were wild caught by fisherman with the intent to sell them to be killed for shark fin soup. Georgia Aquarium bought them and rehomed them in the aquarium to save their lives. It is not the best home for them of course but when I toured behind the scenes there, you see how well loved and cared for they are. The sharks in the aquarium are essentially rescues and help serve as ambassadors to raise awareness for the species and the dangers they face on a day to day basis in the wild.

And they have a huge area to swim, the water is clear, they have a good life and so on... In my opinion it’a better to life in an Aquarium where they have enough space, they aren’t abused or have to learn tricks. In the ocean they are going to be killed by humans for money or because of the plastic. So please say they haven’t enough space, they have. And like I said, they can survive there without getting hurt

    • @veereadsthings
      @veereadsthings 5 років тому +6

      I understand the concern but you have to understand the tank where the whale sharks are was designed specifically to house them. The ocean voyager tank is about 13 acres (for reference a football field is about 1.32 acres). Studies over the years have shown that the whale sharks are flourishing in this enviorment. The water is kept clean and pollution free, the whale sharks are under a very well fed schedule and are extremely well taken care of. As are all the species in the aquarium. Also the whale sharks are endangered so conservations are necessary to their continued surivival. Through the whale sharks being housed at the aquaroum we've learned so much about them and are still learning so much more. There was a study done a few years back about the whale sharks and the study showed that the four whale sharks housed in the aquarium most likely would not be living the long healthy lives they are now outside of the aquarium.

Hope this helped a bit!

      @FoxLimbs Question: How would they not be able to adapt and survive in the wild if they were their in the first place?? If they capture them in the wild, and are held captive in an aquarium, wouldn’t they still have their wild life instincts? It’s not like they can just forget how they once were in the wild and the mechanisms that they did while they were in the wild. Or does being held captive for a really long time, make the animal sort of forget their natural instincts of survival in the wild by being fed by people, instead of them hunting their selves? I’m really intrigued to know
