Years ago someone gave a tip to never have your hands touching the item in the picture because it deters people. If you must hold something open to demonstrate or take a picture then wear white cotton gloves. It sounds weird but the image with his gloved hand looked really good and made it seem the item was well cared for.

This is absolutely true. I hate seeing peoples' hands touching things. One woman who sold jewelry modeled the rings on her hand with awful chipped nails. Disgusting!!! Put the item down on a counter and don't have anything in the background (plain wall or something).

I sell my better quality stuff on Mercari. So far in the past year I’ve made a little over $600. It’s a pain in the butt though having to package each thing up and print the label and take it to the post office. It’s teaching me that I need to be more mindful of what I allow into my home so I don’t have to have regrets and keep selling. I work very full time and am a single mom so it’s definitely not easy or fun.

I really love the process of printing a lable and going to the post office. Each time I’m so happy that another crap is leaving my tine flat. I’m working on home office, and little walk to the post office near my home during the lunch break is good for me.

A few years ago I purchased a small cabinet at a yard sale for $15. Fast forward nearly 10 years later and I realized we no longer needed this piece of furniture. I sold it for $75. My son was horrified that I sold it for more than I bought it for, but I explained to him that the piece is definitely worth more these days, so the woman who bought it got a steal for today's prices.

2:25 I learned last year just how much donated stuff actually ends up in the land fills. It’s unbelievable!!! A very significant amount of stuff at Goodwill, Salvation Army etc ends up in landfill.
It’s not the fault of Goodwill, it’s the excessive consumerism that creates the problem. I now think twice before buying anything.

I have sold a large number of items on Facebook marketplace. However, what gets to me is that I research the prices to list items at and yet people offer half of that amount! I still have several boxes of items to sell and I’ve become so frustrated with people not showing up to buy items or offering ridiculous low amounts that I’ve stopped selling things. 😕

And I have a full-time time job, so selling takes a lot of time in my spare time. I am currently doing vinted (not sure if you have this in the USA), but Marissa Zen lives in Germany now so she might know. Is an online platform for 2nd Hand clothes similar to Ebay, And some people sell things semi-professionally there, they get for free (in case people die or houses are cleared). That way they can make more money but as you correctly said you need to put in the work. But honestly that recquires a lot of motivation and work as well. Dont get fooled by people giving you figures they make with that. Is just marketing ;o) Depending on your job or education, you have to see whether it brings you joy. I would host a home Bazar first with family and friends let them know you are having the sale. Let them know what day and time.Make an invitation thats cute. Offer snacks , coffee table as they shop.
Wash , iron set up everything neatly . Match clothes that look cute and they will sell .

My instincts are to follow these steps, but please tell me any lessons learned from this approach. Step 1: Declutter House: completely minimize every closet, storage space & basement and throw it all into the garage. Step 2: Declutter Garage: Organize, photograph and sell. I know this overload in the garage will be an overwhelming sight and not sure of the best way to set myself up for success. Any tips?

    Treasure hunters, take note.
If anyone has or finds old, very worn and flat rubber soccer balls at any estate sales/garage sales/yard sales let me know.
I'm looking for late 1960s, 1970s full size rubber soccer balls that were used in soccer games during that time period.
Many, if found today, would be very worn, beat up and flat. This is OK by me!
I would pay anywhere from $100 up to $500 for some of the oldest, most worn rubber soccer balls that could be found. The big issue is dry rot unfortunately. If the ball is hard, stiff, firm, dry cracking, peeling, flaking, then it has dry rot. If it very soft and mushy when flat, then it does NOT have dry rot.

In the past, I typically didn't do so well in garage sales due to lack of interest. People forget about it, or not suitable to their schedule, inclimate weather, or distance. Once I paid $18 for a newspaper ad and sold $15 worth of merchandise. Unless you make it like a block or town party of everyone doing it together. Online reaches a broader audience, and has a wider scale of options.

I have things to declutter, but it’s either “stuff” or it’s valuable stuff. I have a huge pile by my front door right now that’s the “garage sale” pile for next spring. But at a garage sale, people are going to want to pay .50 cents for things that should go for $2 or $5 or even $10. So I put the more worthwhile (people might want. want.) on marketplace and either people are GREAT and appreciative and pay and pick up. Or they’re rude and keep trying to dicker me down to $100 for an $800 desk. That’s when it gets demoralizing. Because I can just see it getting harder and harder to offload certain things that I know are valuable, know people want, but know they’re too cheap to pay for. The clothes are either garage sale $2 and I’m happy with that, or Poshmark $20-$100 for cashmere/silk/wool and no way in hell I’m putting it in a garage sale. But then there’s photographing, SEO, packaging, mailing. Ugh. I actually came to UA-cam today searching “how to reconcile yourself to throwing items away instead of selling” to try to get my mind to let me just go dump it all off somewhere so I can stop worrying about it. Took 3 Iranian silk kilims to consignment at a shop 2 hours away, and not one bite on them even though they’re really nice. I don’t get it. People are either blowing money on garbage, or trying to talk you down on high value items. Weird.

I list for what I want on e- Bay. I only need one buyer. People search differently so sometimes there is not much competition. I don't need to relist,, or haggle... Inflation has been so high that I increased prices substantially and sold more. It is still a lot of work for little return, but I clear sentimental items and those yhat would otherwise become landfill. A lid to a popular Tupperware product from the 80s, a cord to a vintage popular game 😆. Best regards!
