"Michelangelo took me to a palazzo once..." is the greatest opening to a sentence ever uttered by a human being
What a great guy, brimming with knowledge and experience, I could listen to him talk of movies for days with a smile on my face.
He closes with "I'm not greedy" - and it's true, he left with just 2 films! This must be the record for smallest-looting-of-the-closet. And his anecdote about All That Jazz in Beirut is wonderful. All That Jazz is a popular pick in this series. I love it, too, and I'm happy to say that I own it on BluRay.
He actually went back and picked up several more.
I don't think William Friedkin took anything afaik
His film THE TIN DRUM is one of the greatest German films I have seen, no doubt.
I enjoy and look forward to these installments. Whomever started this series has my utmost gratitude.
Just picking two out of hundreds? That shows a lot of restraint. What a graceful man!
CONTRAST HIM WITH THE GREEDY TERRY GILLIAM
@@gaynor505 No you guys gotta check out Barry Jenkins, he trumps them all 💀💀💀
@@soylentcompany5235 great day to get your reply, given that Thursday is Soylent Green Day..... The Scoops are coming....!!!!
What a beautiful soul. Thank you, Volker.
Antonioni's Trilogy: L'Avventura, La Notte, L'Eclisse. Three masterpieces.
... and L'ECLISSE Is the best.
Get Werner Herzog in the Criterion closet!!!!
Find it funny how they are using copies of scanners and a hard day's night as a camera stand
Masterbarious loveless
This might be one of the more unique closet picks. A man of great taste.
Great director! Schlondorff also wanted River Phoenix & John Malkovich for his Rimbaud film; he introduced Phoenix to the poet's work via Miller's Time of the Assassins.
It's so interesting to see all these filmmakers and actors pick out films from the Criterion Collection.
Volker is so self effacing and wonderful. He's so charming when he does interviews.
Love The Tin Drum
what a gentleman. i like his films.
This video is so calming
Wow, so many DVD!!! Would like to see the collection. It seems, he like French films ;-) Me too!
Circle of Deceit: great underrated film!
My number one wish for a Criterion release is Edward Yang's A Brighter Summer Day.
Criterion is making it. Its just delayed right now I read.
+Infametheus how do you know in advance? is there a leak?
+xynzu It was on the Criterion forums.
oh okay, thank you
This is my first ever Criterion now lol
Would love to see Circle of Deceit (Volker's follow up to The Tin Drum) in the collection.
You heard it from him: time to release Boyhood in the collection!
Without a doubt it will be released in it, for if Great Beauty got a release so soon after a theater run, then it is possible it will be in it shortly.
I wish I could see Fassbinder do one of these.
He'd probably try to fuck the cameraman
And then get it to commit suicide!
@@Neuroneos True! And he would be successful at it.
I wish I could see Fassbender do anything.
this one has the best great film-related stories to disc grab ratio in this whole series
L’eclisse
Young Torless
All That Jazz
Boyhood
Le beau Serge
Le Havre
La Chienne
Ace In The Hole
Mysteries Of The Organism
I've actually heard that Richard Linklater wants a Criterion dvd release. They should release under their name.
Please please please do more in this category.. I've been watching all the videos in this section and i wanna watch more with prominent directors like scorsese, fincher, terrantino, richard linklater, nolan, ari arister, robert eggers, noah baumbach, greta gerwig and many more..
I would love to see his own Der plötzliche Reichtum der armen Leute von Kombach on DVD, One of his first movies and a really great one.
Absolutely love Volker.
Basically, what everybody desires is to be a great film artist/writer/director/ famous person, and be able to go into the Criterion closet so that they can pour out their love for certain movies in the collection and get them for FREE!
Love the way he tips his hat at the end. xD
L Eclipse with Alain Delon + la Bete Humaine with Jean Gabin
What a reverent spirit.
Volker is a wonderful man, he was very kind to me. Great to see him in the closet.
The tin drum 🥁 my favorite movie
"a miracle of a movie" on Boyhood made me happy.
Charming, erudite and self-effacing.
His name is awesome
Worked with Melville!
Still waiting for Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up on Blu Ray!
same here. i hope they remix and remaster the audio because the audio on the mgm dvd is terrible. i could barely hear anything.
thevoid99 I've never seen the MGM dvd of it. I just keep watching my recording of Blow-Up on my DVR. How is the PQ on the MGM DVD? I think Blow-Up is one of the most fascinating films ever made, and Antonioni's masterpiece. If Criterion did a knock up job on it I would be enthralled!
Zabriskie Point and The Passenger too!
LetsTalkMovies
the look of it is good though i do think it needs some work and remastering for its look. it would be a great coup for criterion to get.
Dave Starsign
most definitely although i'm fine w/ my copy of the passenger since it features a great commentary track from jack nicholson who supplied the print of the film for sony to release.
Imagine him talking next to Martin Scorsese. He speaks very slow
Or worse, Quentin Tarantino
Bar Lynch and Kubrick, American directors don’t know the meaning of «less is more»
Could please anyone mention what is the camera the man is using handheld to shoot this video with. Thanks in advance!
Scanners is right behind him 2:40
Tipazo.
BAfter watching this I've decided to devote the rest of my life to cataloging and illustrating all the different species of pistachio nuts.
How does one get there?
they need a better, bigger closet. additionally, they need to get the lighting better. criterion is a film company.
small room, dim lightning, just brings people closer together
Right. The focus needs to move off of the guest and what they have to say and their choices, and towards polished production values that will make it look more plastic and insincere. That's why movies like My Dinner With Andre will never be as good as something more polished in its presentation, like say Ant-Man. Maybe they could have dancing girls present each video case, with flashy trailer-clips to remind us what the movies are about.
@@WalterLiddy fuck up g
I read that first sentence in a Roy Scheider voice
@@WalterLiddy unnecessarily snarky but contentually correct response
A great director. Really love Die Blechtrommel! Would love to see Martin Scorsese visit the closet.
You should see Martin's apartment.
Wonder what would happen if they got Werner Herzog in there............
or Klaus Kinski
Cant wait for Boyhood II: Manhood. To bad its announced for release in 2038 🤔
PLease bring alberto fuguet
You guys need to release Pink Floyd The Wall
You are so right! I would love for them to make an Criterion Edition of The Wall.
+DidIMentionItAlsoTravelsInTime? YES YES YES
I watched it recently, the animations were fantastic 👍
Artemis, I don`t think that they need an education - dare I say, thought control - from you.
Working with Melville before the new wave started . Swann in Love and that TV Documentary about Hitler using puppets early 90s ect
"Yes, I did direct The Handmaid's Tale in 1990. May God forgive me." 😼
I'm not that greedy...
i've been saying that all my life?
Criterion should restore the footage from these videos because the quality is so low.
I thought he was going to be wearing a big boot as a hat
Nice Volker...I'm sure Criterion appreciates your economy after Sean Baker's pillaging.
Ministry of Orgasm - not an accidental misspelling.
Barbet Schroeder soon sil vous plait.
Man he is so awesome but then he calls Boyhood a miracle..
I don't understand the love for Boyhood at all...
+Sam Davies That.... is why you fail.
Daniel Lee could you help me try and understand why people like it? Why is it good? The cinematography is awful, out of focus and dull (which is weird as the protagonist becomes a photographer...) the acting is good, but there is no story, and it's dull. I feel people like the film just because it was made over several years, it's a gimmick and I don't think the final film deserves to be as praised as it is
+Sam Davies same here, I mean I can understand it, I just dont think its a good movie at all
+Sam Davies I can understand why people don't like it, as it can be very slow, I personally do really like it. I thought it was a well-acted movie with an interesting lead character. And I never understood the argument that there was no story. Many of Linklater's films don't have technical stories (like Slacker, Dazed and Confused, and Waking Life), they're more about the characters. The cinematography wasn't the best, but how they managed to make it and it didn't end up being a total failure is surprising. That's just me, though. I really enjoyed it.
sonicfan1234ish the problem for me was the cinema verité they were aiming for I dont think they pulled it off at all, it just came as a very amateurish movie IMO
Boyhood was boring
yes it was a huge gimmick, but Arquette was great
