  • A quick walkthrough on how I've managed to grow giant bamboo plants from seeds.
    What you need:
Seeds - Available from Amazon or eBay
Soil - 50/50 peat equivalent and perlite mix
    Propagator
Warming mat or a warm place. My mat is a Bosmere.
    Water
    Luck
Soak your seeds for 1-2 days, ideally in warm water. Put them in the moist soil in the propagator and put them in a warm place. After a week or two they should germinate. I've had some seeds take months before they'd wake up so bear with it.
When the seeds are a good size pot them on in the same soil mix. If it's warm enough where you live you can get them used to going outside. Be sure to site them away from the wind.
Each year they should send up new culms, green shoots from the base. Each new culm will get progressively wider and sprout ever longer canes.
Although giant bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world don't expect big things straight away. They'll take a few years to get established. And if you live in a place that's not exactly tropical expect growth to take a little longer.
My most important tip is keep them out of the wind. They will dessicate in no time at all. Shield them somehow, I use hardier plants to shield them and when it gets cold and breezy I wrap them in fleece that I get from the garden centre.
    Good luck. Happy growing!
