hey pat look on steam on the game u see theres a big update and they are gonna add alot to the game like metal detector so u can find stuff and new villagers its really cool and more :)
I played a demo of this and I got bored after a couple hours. The animals were too creepy for me and the collecting aspect didn't hit as well as AC. I'm glad it was only a demo and not the full game. I wouldn't pay for this game IMHO
It’s amazing what a single developer can do. This game was made entirely by one single person. considering the price and its potential for customization, especially in terms of making your own objects. It’s a pretty good deal!
Stardew Valley was made by one person, and it’s one of the greatest games ever made in my opinion. A great price too. It is inspiring to see that people can make something awesome on their own.
I think it's the proportions of the villagers that makes them creepy. They literally took the human character build and stuck an animal head on it. Hits too close to the uncanny valley.
Okay, I played this game for a little bit and every new villager being convinced to move in gave me "creepy" vibes. Like "quit your job in the city, move here, do it!" That Elephant at the inn is starting a cult I swear.
I think this would be perfect if they didn’t take and unfortunately didn’t do well, the animal villagers. It would have been cool to have other humans. It would have then felt like it’s own game. I have played over 700 of ACNH and love it, but yes, people would have been better than animals that didn’t get enough attention in the studio. Other than that I will probably purchase it since I’m not ready for a new island on my game and it looks cool :)
So true!! Like if theyre gonna have animal villagers in a game just like ACNH they shouldve designed them well 😭 Animal Crossing devs really knew how to make their villagers aesthetically pleasing bc the game is *centred* around them, but Hokko Life could’ve very easily had Humans instead! The animal villagers feel so out of place especially with their poor design!
Thank you for mentioning this game in your last video and making another video on it. I’m really interested in this game now, but it probably wouldn’t have even been on my radar without your last video! Would love more content on it, like maybe a let’s play video or two or a stream!
I have the exact same thought from all the demos I’ve watched. Everything looks BEYOND stunning… except the villagers 😩. Like I was obsessed with AC villager hunting like gochas and this one… I might be avoiding the villagers as much as possible lol. Maybe the developer will hear the feedback and invest in the villager design in the future. Insane that a single person developed this. Will definitely be buying as long as the switch version isn’t too clunky (Disney Dreamlight Valley’s village decorating mechanic is so clunky on switch so I hope this one will be better)
LOL I totally agree with what you said about the villagers looking like people dressed as animals 😂 Other than that though yeah it looks really cute and for $20 shoot, I might check it out. Thanks, Pat! 🧡
I appreciated when you were talking about the clock. I kept looking at the bottom trying to figure out if it was real time or on a clock because as you said that's a double-edged sword for me. Like, Ooblets does it really well. The days don't seem overly long but you still get a lot done while in the remake of Harvest Moon - Friends of Mineral Town I always feel like I'm racing against the clock and I super quickly got tired of it and stopped playing. This however looks super cozy and I'm really really interested.
The animals don’t bug me at all. Ive watched the game play when it was first tested on PC and wanted it then. It’s a cute, cozy, and simple game that I like. What is really neat is that you can make your own furniture and that you can get other peoples creations as well. I am glad that this is coming on Switch, but I really want to see how switch plays and also how it functions in creating furniture. When watching the previous gameplays on PC’s, I heard it was easier to make furniture with a mouse then change to controller for the rest for the rest of the game. Since the Switch doesn’t have a mouse, I’m worried on the designs aspect. Pat, when testing out the switch, can you please get to opening up the shop to create your own furniture on both the PC and Switch. This way you can give us clear understanding how it handles. But for only $20, it still seems like a bargain. That price is for Switch too, right? Thanks for the review.
Glad I’m not the only one! If they were more animal shaped it would’ve been too close to ac. They have they’re own style and I like it. ^^ Sure they kinda look like mascots but I like it
It’s the proportions of the villagers that look creepy. They look so tall and gangly, but have cute animal heads. We’re so used to cute short villagers in AC. 🤷🏻♀️
I like the animals. I think the art style is simply different from AC. I'll buy this because I'm bored of ACNH and I think crafting will be better on Hokko Life.
Hmmm it looks pretty cool and I do like how its taking some of the issues that was with ACNH and making it better. Although I am not too keen on the villagers. Comparing them to how they are in AC they don't look right to me. I might get it in the future, but right now I am still saving money because you know stuff in the world is a pain.
Yes I’m so happy you reviewed this! I saw your 5 cozy game recommendation video and this game I was the most excited for! This game and lemon cake I can’t wait to try out!
i think the only thing that makes the "villagers" creepy, is the head proportion + them being taller than you in animal crossing you were always taller or the same height as the animals
I honestly had no interest in this game until after hearing your opinions. Now I’ll probably get it since it’s only $20. I actually find the creepy villagers charming 😂
I think I'd buy this if the dev agreed to fix little bugs like villagers popping out of chairs and door frames being to small for anyone to enter. It'd further entice me if they had a roadmap of seasonal updates.
@@iamjohnporter67 I'm learning a lot more about it now. I guess it's early access for PC since June of last year. I feel like I looked at it a long time ago and cringed. It's looking better but ACNH has really spoiled me for polish.
I was unsure as the look of the animals also made me sorta be uncertain about it. But I can see myself picking it up after this video, it's $30 in Australia so not too bad. I hope you do more reviews of games as they come out, especially in the latest Nintendo Direct one, because it helps me decide whether it's worth it or not!
Thanks for the review. I like how the placement grid is more refine. But the creepy villagers and your character’s odd proportions will likely give me nightmares though. 😢
I don’t care much for how the villagers look because I’ll likely focus on the designing part more. But I am a little worried on the performance and whether they’ve fixed the bugs from their Steam release. According to the latest Steam reviews, the game (on Steam) has a few game breaking bugs on save issues. Some people lost their 80 hour progress (now fixed by the devs) so I hope this is fixed for the Switch release
Am I the only one who find the animals cute? LOL I have a few online friends who played the early access Steam release and have loved it overall. I am definitely picking it up but, there's SO many cozy games this month and I can only swing one this payday so am currently torn between this and Potion Permit haha Thanks so much for the review though! Will look forward to a Switch specific review. I love that it looks like you can completely customize the colour options in character creation at least! Ooh, bulk crafting and customizing villager houses right away!? Nice heh Love the look of the weather and mining mechanics so far too! Agree on SDV and Harvestella days being a bit too fast so am happy to hear time seems slower. I really like the day time passage in Ooblets, it's fairly slow, so happy to hear this seems similar. Making this decision super hard hahaha
Totally agree on the creepy villagers but the game looks so good - especially for the price. Thanks for the review, look forward to you playing it on stream and more videos 🧡
Honestly I can’t stand animal crossing, but I love hokko life. Animal crossing is bland and restrictive. This game basically has the artwork of the animal crossing but actual freedom to do what you want. And the time is better
Thanks for sharing! This was actually my first time hearing anything about this game! I think for $20 I may give it a shot when it comes to the Switch in a few days!
I believe I'll check out this game on Switch. It looks pretty interesting, I love the idea to be able to bulk craft and have more customization options from what I saw in the trailer. And hearing you praise the music and sound has me excited. I've already bought it and I'll be playing it after I'm done with work!
No one is doing new coverage of this game since they played it a year ago. And apparently it's had a few updates since then I hope you cover it some more and show more game play 💜
I wasn’t super interested based on the little bit of the trailer I saw but this made me much more interested! I’m still not sure if I’ll get it yet but it’s moved up my list lol
It's a single developer. Amd I'm in his discord. But he is working non stop. He is also always asking for improvements. And has plans for future updates
Glad people are getting excited for this game too because I've been playing the game since early access. They're going to add house expansion on launch and I can't wait for that tbh.
This was one I wrote down during the direct. Good to know you will be covering it, at least a bit. You're correct.....for $20 why not? Although I'll probably wait for your Switch review. I have enough PC games and looking for another Switch game to play.
This reminds me a lot of like an animal crossing/MySims mashup with the mining aspect. And if they did get inspiration from MySims I wish they had done what MySims did with having humans instead of animals.
I'm interested. I'm over New Horizons for a while now so this game (hopefully) will get updates to keep the game alive. Here's to hoping there's a bunch of new animal characters out there to meet and live alongside.
I'm playing it on switch, things like the character customization, the furniture design, and placing furniture down is really buggy like I haven't yet got the hang of furniture designing because moving planks of wood just doesn't work. The villagers are kind of creepy especially the pig and the giraffe but I don't mind too much. The sound design is stunning I love the music. I love all the plant options like they look less boxy compared to animal crossing which I love. I love how you can move stuff around around in villagers houses steal shit from villagers, I think it's so feirce. Crafting is very quick and nice. I have experienced some customization which is where you can also design furniture customization is easier. I think the design furniture option has a lot of potential. you're like literally building the models of each item shape by shape which is awesome, it's beyond customization you're literally building piece by piece I just wish I could get it to work right on switch. if you're switch is drifting like mine, it will get weird tho, like running in place and won't let you select things at first. Character customization is also nice allowing you to choose any color of off the spectrum for your skin eyes and hair but again that specific part gave me problems. Also a lot of inclusive hairstyles too. I just unlocked "kappn island" not to spoil anything but stunning tropical plants, way more than animal crossing has. mining is nice so far, you need lanterns to progress into the mine. love all the flowers you can collect.
What i dont like is the blueprint harder craftibg furniture thing you unlock where its a COMPLETE DYI design. Villagers asks for a light bulb or whatever and its complicated to make it without em saying "it dont look finished" or whatever
I hadn't even heard of this game until I saw this video. I agree the animals are a bit odd but this looks like a game with a lot of potential! I like that it's not real time, which is something I enjoy in theory but not so much in practice. I will definitely have to check this one out.
This game basically looks like the result of someone thinking "Well if New Horizons won't add these 'quality of life' things, then I'll just do it myself!"
The animal villagers' heights matching your character's height is what adds to the creep factor. Why is a jock pig the same height or the plaid bunny?? Creeeeepyyyyyy
I think it would’ve been kinda cool that instead of animals that moved in, we get actual people. Like imagine 300 different people villagers that we could get. I think that it would have been a cool cross between harvest moon and acnh if they did that
For me it seems like a sort of mix of animal crossing and story of seasons. The only thing is that you don't have to care for animals, they are the villigers. Thanks for the video, still thinking of buying it, but it looks amezing. 😁👍🏻
hello pat i been playing this game for a year the only thing about this game is the crafting like if a villager needs a double seat or a light etc and u have to make them and i had a hard time cause they was no blue print to make it orther then that i do love the game there is a big update comin on the sept 27 on steam :) take care
Hey Patrick, very interesting, I would be really interested in a video on switch version. Looks like a good alternative for those of us who have played acnh to death and gone as far as we can, I've rebuilt my island 4 times now and it's loosing its appeal! I think I will be getting this as its a good price. Defo agree with you about the animals!
I hadn't heard of this game before but it looks pretty cute. For only 20 bucks I'm definitely tempted o: Most games that are described as being "like Animal Crossing" are...nothing like Animal Crossing imo 😆 and don't seem like games I'd enjoy. But this seems cute! And not having to wait for bridges and inclines sounds good, lol!
I hope they add vehicles and minigames and everything we've been asking for from AC for YEARS. Then maybe Animal Crossing will get mad or jealous and do some updates to catch up
Are the different home designs resulting in different floor plans? I wish that was a possibility in ACNH- the house styles can be so different now and it would be fun to have 2 second floor rooms (I know we can create them, but it would be fun to have a landing and then go in left and right sides and have 2 rooms.)
I will be picking this up tomorrow to compare it to New Horizons. It’s such a relief to pay only $20 for this game after paying so much more for other games.
Agree with the look of the animals. I like the look of the humans, but the animals look odd. I bought the game for Switch, but will not be able to play until I come back from my holidays mid-October. I’m really looking forward to playing it. Good to know the timing/clock for the game isn’t based on real time. I don’t like most farming games because the “day” is too fast, and I can never get everything done. It’s more stressful than relaxing. And can I say that being able to put a bridge across a cliff/chasm is awesome!?
The game is a bunch of bugs. I played it a few hours and i experienced just wtf moments by accidentaly glitching onto places, missing villagers, buggy quests etc. It still needs much of work and i think it left the early acces waaaaay to fast. That game isn‘t playable at all (on Switch)
I totally agree I played this game on my Switch for a little while before hitting the home button still can't believe I wasted fifteen dollars on this glitchy game.
@@QuittingUA-cam24 i feel sorry for you, for me its the same. I acutally was kinda hyped for this game and waited weeks for it. I spend my pocket money for it and can’t even return it…
@@Zarah54 Yeah when I first sew the trailer from Nintendo it gave me Animal Crossing vibes Intel I started playing it and experience tones of issues with the game not to mention the neighbors had that creepy lifeless animatronic look to them which was the biggest turn off for me.
Judging by what I see in this video, I still have the same minor complaint that I posted on Twitter several months ago. The main character seems to run too slow. On Twitter, I was told (by the developers) that the slow motion was only because the clip on Twitter was purposely slowed down. SOMETHING like that. But nope, it's still the same in this video. I think that with more work (and a bigger budget), this game had the potential of being even better than Animal Crossing.
I played on Steam when it was in Early Access. I’m curious how crafting turned out because I remember it being confusing and somewhat cumbersome. I know the intention was to allow complete open creation, but at the time I played, there weren’t any tutorials and I felt lost. In your next video, can you show some crafting?

it looks really sweet, even with those animals thanks for the review!
The villagers are giving Webkinz NPC
NO FR LMAO
I am sold!! Great review, I love creepy characters. When’s the live stream?
Pat, do you think you’ll ever do a list of your Top 10 (or more?) video game series of all-time?
Thank you ; yes ASAP . The " aminals " are creepy cute.
What i dont like is the blueprint harder craftibg furniture thing you unlock where its a COMPLETE DYI design. Villagers asks for a light bulb or whatever and its complicated to make it without em saying "it dont look finished" or whatever
I'm glad I'm not alone about the animal characters feeling... off, but at $20 i can definitely over look it.
Yeah when I saw the trailer I thought the villages are creepy, but maybe that’s kind of a fun thing if you like spooky things
I hadn't even heard of this game until I saw this video. I agree the animals are a bit odd but this looks like a game with a lot of potential! I like that it's not real time, which is something I enjoy in theory but not so much in practice. I will definitely have to check this one out.
probably gonna pass on this one. Looks cute tho. I'm addicted to Disney Dreamlight rn
I wanted to try this game but since you said the animals look like humans dressed in an animal costume I can’t unsee it 😭
On sale right now for $15.99 if anyone is interested in getting it
First like and comment ? COOL! Thanks for making this review because I’m thinking of getting this 😊
hello pat i been playing this game for a year the only thing about this game is the crafting like if a villager needs a double seat or a light etc and u have to make them and i had a hard time cause they was no blue print to make it orther then that i do love the game there is a big update comin on the sept 27 on steam :) take care
All they need to do to de-creepify the villagers is give 'em tails.
Pat, thank you for this video. It's first time hearing about this game & I'll definitely be picking this up. 👍
the game looks good, it's animal crossing but for every platform
I downloaded a game on my phone a while back called "sunshine days" and this actually seems pretty similar. The animals/villagers look very similar.
I hadn't heard of this game before but it looks pretty cute.
For only 20 bucks I'm definitely tempted o:
Most games that are described as being "like Animal Crossing" are...nothing like Animal Crossing imo 😆 and don't seem like games I'd enjoy. But this seems cute! And not having to wait for bridges and inclines sounds good, lol!
Thanks for sharing your review of this new game. For $20 I think I’ll try it out
I like that the villagers wear pants 😆
I hope they add vehicles and minigames and everything we've been asking for from AC for YEARS. Then maybe Animal Crossing will get mad or jealous and do some updates to catch up
Are the different home designs resulting in different floor plans? I wish that was a possibility in ACNH- the house styles can be so different now and it would be fun to have 2 second floor rooms (I know we can create them, but it would be fun to have a landing and then go in left and right sides and have 2 rooms.)
Cute!! Thanks for your honest review! I will most likely be picking this up on the switch ❤
Yesss! Hopefully the switch version runs just as well
I've been eyeing this game since it was announced. I'm def going to pick this up!
This is like the TemTem of Animal Crossing, lmao
i love how i got an ad for this game while watching this
This is definitely on my radar!
Son:mom can we get animal crossing at home
Mom: we have animal crossing at home
*Animal crossing at home*
I will be picking this up tomorrow to compare it to New Horizons. It’s such a relief to pay only $20 for this game after paying so much more for other games.
The only thing I'm not a fan of is no rotating camera. Game looks great over all.. nice video, thanks!
I think I’ll be putting this on my birthday wish list. It looks really cute.
If only the animals didn't look so unsettling XD
Thanks for the review Pat! I love your opinion and am excited to see what your Nintendo switch review is and seeing more of the game!
The villagers look like animatronics 😅
I spend my pocket money for it and can’t even return it…
@@Zarah54 Yeah when I first sew the trailer from Nintendo it gave me Animal Crossing vibes Intel I started playing it and experience tones of issues with the game not to mention the neighbors had that creepy lifeless
animatronic look to them which was the biggest turn off for me.
Maybe eventually you are able to turn all the strange looking animal people into humans!
I played on Steam when it was in Early Access. I’m curious how crafting turned out because I remember it being confusing and somewhat cumbersome. I know the intention was to allow complete open creation, but at the time I played, there weren’t any tutorials and I felt lost. In your next video, can you show some crafting?
He did show crafting in the video
@@bazdog4464 not the full crafting with the blueprints. There’s A LOT MORE than what he showed and it’s confusing.
