Plus you then you're basically begging people to pool cash and buy hilarious ad spots. How much would we all pay to have Aaron read a super positive ad for Pepsi Max Mango or Pepsi Wild Cherry? Or maybe Ian to read a pro-Mars ad read?
Idea: just start doing ad reads for all the typical podcast sponsors like better help and vessi and just send them invoices. I'm sure some of them will pay without vetting a contract
I don't think a Patreon is the path forward, or if it was, definitely not Patreon-only. Patreon-only squashes your organic growth completely, period. People can't discover you without paying $7 a month? You're left with only a portion of your existing fanbase. The only channels I've seen go that route still keep a foot in with free videos every now and then. Second, I think the conversion from a free podcast to a paid-only podcast is harder than Ian thinks. You go from an easy part of people's everyday routine to, essentially, another subscription service asking for cash. Which puts you up against those services, even implicitly. $7 a month for one podcast when I can get the entire Netflix library for double that? Finally, I agree with Aaron in terms of effort x outcome. Once people start paying, and particularly if you have backer tiers, you've created expectations. Regular, **monthly**, expectations. You'd be saying goodbye to a gap in a week between podcasts (for example). I don't know that you guys want to take on that burden. Just my 2¢ as someone who has seen a lot of content creators take on Patreons too early or too often.
def. dont like the patreon/subscription idea 😅on multiple levels Interesting idea with the public sponsorship bidding. TBH think your potential revenue would be much lower compared to the „regular“ sponsorships you are already doing now. Could imagine that the sponsorship bids start on a highish level but then quickly begin to plateau? and that you’d be maybe losing out on many $ where a company would be willing to pay way more than the deal they are getting over the public auction. for the audience it would at least be interesting to follow IMO bottom line to grow the podcast is for you both to have fun recording. that will attract more listeners and keep your existing listeners engaged thanks for the episode guys 🙌
I‘m rooting for Aaron to pull it off with all those crazy things
Aaron was on another level in this one. "I wrote down 7 I don't know what to do next" got me good...
I am happy to listen to ad breaks as long as it‘s not too many. I really like the idea of an open platform to buy ads on the show.

I like the idea of the auctioned ad spots, but post the winning auction value for each ad, either spoken or as an on screen marker

Haaaaaahahaha
59:38 - Ian says Iowa, Aaron then automatically ignores the state and says Idaho. They are basically the same though

Budget app should be the new todo app. 😅 Every new developer's project. And Budget app is personal so it's different for every person.
I feel like this episode should have just been titled "Math".
Also, if you do a 'subscription' thing, don't use Patreon, it sucks as a platform.
