jeff smith I’ve got a few years on you, and I completely agree. Best ever. He’s been my favorite songwriter and performer since high school, and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen him in concert. There’s nothing like a live Waits show. I hope that he outlives me, because I don’t want to be in a world without him!

jeff smith, he’s just like you’d imagine. The first time I ever saw him was in The Palace Theater in Ann Arbor Michigan, a college town, and it was the beginning of a nearly half century love affair. If you look on the cover of his ‘Nighthawks’ album, that’s how he looked. Tweed jacket, patches on the elbows, a bottle in a paper bag in his jacket pocket, and a couple packs of Old Golds. He was touring either that album or my favorite of his ‘Small Change’, I can’t remember exactly, because he played stuff from both and Nighthawks is a live album to begin with. He blew my socks off as the saying goes, and let me tell you, he’s a master on that piano! When he played ‘The Piano Has Been Drinking’, he actually made the piano sound drunk! I will never ever forget that. By the way, if you by chance haven’t heard the Nighthawks At The Diner album, I would highly recommend it. It’s the closest thing you will ever get to a classic live performance by him. He jokes and tells stories between songs, and even has some pretty interesting introductions for some of the songs. 😂

Hankering Roberts, LOL, Step Right Up is from my favorite album (as stated above.) The words for every other song were on the album sleeve, except for that one. There was a note that said something like, “For the words to Step Right Up, send two creepy Charlie’s to young Tom Waits c/o some hotel, somewhere “ 😂 I can’t remember the hotel, and I’m not near my album collection.
If you look close in the boom box pile, you'll see a mono speaker box. That's the JVC El Diablo and its worth like thousands!
