Matthew Tirona is a composer, electronic music producer, and choral singer studying in the Tufts University + New England Conservatory (NEC) Dual-Degree Program, regarded as “one of the most selective and intensive programs of its kind.” He studies Composition and Music Technology under Dr. John Mallia and studies Mathematics and Computer Science at Tufts.
Being the only first-year to do so, Matthew was awarded all three NEC Composition departmental readings held for the 2023-2024 academic year: "In Spring" (Fall 2023 Orchestra Readings), "Mother Nature & Father Sky" (Spring 2024 Orchestra Readings), and "Azure" (2024 Wind Ensemble Readings), receiving recordings of his pieces. In addition to his extensive large ensemble work, Matthew premiered "Pie Jesu" (for mezzo-soprano and piano) at Tufts University's Distler Performance Hall.
Matthew is also a successful electronic music producer, premiering mixes at both the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 Tufts/NEC Dual-Degree Recitals and the New Music Concert at the University of Iowa Music Center (as a finalist in the MGMC 2024 Call For Scores). His most recent album, "you feel like home…", explores the intersection of heartache, nostalgia, and longing through forty minutes of new-age-influenced ambient electronica. Matthew has also had electronic music featured in Slippery Rock University's 60x60x60 dance concert and in a New York City art loft (Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame Dance project).
Matthew sings in the NEC Symphonic Choir and First Baptist Church of Boston choir, and was also part of the Cappella Clausura Smyth Mass in D Project, singing in the New England Premiere/World Premiere of the New Edition of Ethel Smyth’s Mass in D. Matthew is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). As a composer of Filipino descent, Matthew hopes to bring and encourage diversity to the fields of composition and music technology, in which Filipinos are heavily underrepresented.
