Dr. Becky Smethurst (Rebecca to her mother) is an Oxford astrophysicist who educates viewers on her excellent UA-cam channel, appropriately titled Dr. Becky. She joined me to talk about the James Webb Space Telescope, how the launch was so perfect that we could get generations of discoveries out of it, and what it means to science as we know it.

She’s awesome! Love her content. Her excitement is contagious. She has a passion for what she does. And she explains things to where I can understand them. Total rockstar 👍
So much respect for joe sitting completely still for the whole talk!
Haha
I'm still waiting for the video to start, but the chair hasn't spun yet...
😂😂brilliant 👏
He could have not stared at her the whole time! geeze
@@bobedwards8896 haha yeah, super akward
It is SOOOO cool seeing two of my favorite UA-cam personalities on the same screen, at the same time, and chatting it up!!!
We all love Becky, she's fantastic.
thx for uploading those episodes to youtube. i would never have been listening to those on a podcast site. Dr Smethurst is so interesting i could listen to her for hours.
I'm so glad you've put these on UA-cam. I have ADHD and I really struggle to pay attention to podcasts without video. Thanks Joe! Love Dr Becky too she's brilliant!
Glad to see this here. I'm not much for podcasts. Seeing Dr. Becky gives that extra visual input for her excitement. Yes, you can hear it in her voice, but she's wonderfully animated and expressive in video. Love having two of my favorite UA-camrs in one spot. Thanks, Joe!
I could listen to Dr. Becky talk about space for days.
Always a pleasure hearing Dr. Becky. Thanks Joe for having her back on your show.
Thanks Joe, I really enjoy your dialog with Dr Becky. She's got a great enthusiasm for the subject and you always ask great questions. As a primary channel suggestion maybe a weekly/monthly/quarterly news segment where you get your audience to vote on who to reach out to for an interview for a deeper dive into the news topic's area. Could help drive viewership to this channel too ;-) Not all would agree to an interview but the direction of the poll might make you reach out to folks you never thought to before.
Thanks Joe and Dr Becky! You guys take things to another (tele)scope!
Dr. Becky! One of my favourites!
As someone else said on the comments, her excitement is super contagious. 😊
So glad that fortune smiled upon me and I'm alive for this.
Can't wait for more pictures to come from the James Webb Telescope.
Her channel is amazing and hearing these two together is badass
Diamond UA-cam channel! Great pure quality content!
two of my favorite people on UA-cam in the vid!!
As depressing as politics, mindless consumerism and on going wars still going on, the James Web telescope holds meaning for lay people like myself. In my short lifespan the ability to really see stuff has expanded. If all that is seen is just more mystery and poses more questions that is good enough.Looks like the universe is already bigger than imagined.Since this broadcast the mirrors are aligned, and this machine is actually working to a greater degree.
For all the daily screw ups in software, bad web design, and critical mistakes in daily communications, this marvel of engineering actually works.
We should expect much better from all the consumer crap we use, that promises all things and delivers little. This machine will go largely unhindered tasked with a series of vetted well thought of experiments. Given the state of the world, it may be the last great venture to see the universe as it is. Pristine.
One of your guests Brian Cox, talks about these things. Conciousness and the ability to perceive even in the smallest way defines life
Love the content. Is there a way you could balance the volume? I listen in a noisy environment and can’t use headphones. I have to raise and lower the volume depending on who’s speaking. Thanks.
Couldn't ask anything better. 2 of my favourite UA-camrs
Good stuff! Thx! - Personal preference: to see Joe live, not just a still photo.
Nice!
I love Dr. Becky.
BTW, I’m here because of your recommendation from the main channel.
Thank you, Joe. These kept work palatable tonight. 🤜💥🤛
you're killing it, keep it up
I’m so freaking happy you did this.
"is that the ELT!?"
"No Dr Becky, it's a photograph portrait of Joe Scott."
Joe, check out the National Radio Quiet Zone. it's around the Green Bank Observatory and the Sugar Grove Naval Radio Station in West Virginia
Dr Becky is the best
I really like these videos
I watch a lot of Dr. Becky's videos, although I'll admit sometimes it's all Scythic to me... Ya know, I don't think it would be a bad idea to tell the people who want to put up massive constellations of comsats that before they can play with their new toys, they have to pay it forward and clean up their play area . As in develop safe, efficient, and cost effective tech to clear out a crap load of the space junk out there now.
It's not as if they're doing the comsats for altruistic reasons. Plus, then they could have another tech , or service, to sell. I know it's being worked on as we speak, but the incentive to light a fire under the development and implementation would go way up. Maybe it's crazy. But it would be a multi-win result. Thanks Joe!
Yes!
NGL: The success of the JWST gave me tears of joy. I hate admitting that I was crying but I'll make an exception on this.
Note: Yes budgies are called parakeets in America. Scientific names are a thing for a very complex reason.
This needs an update video now!
Still waiting for a StarGate reboot with her as the Astrophysicist. Must include a scene with her making Dr Mckay look silly.
Thankfully all things that could go wrong didn't go wrong!
Nice 👌
I have to giggle at Joe’s image just being him looking right in Dr Becky’s direction. It’s like he’s a little creepily staring at her in silence (obviously out of scientific admiration!) …
If y'all don't already know - hexagons are the bestagons! :)
Now think of a space-based telescope that's ten times the size of JWST. All we need to do is build an orbital assembly platform. I'll go.

Dr Becky rules
59:09 I thought I was the only one planning on celebrating my 1000000000th second
The Extremely Large Telescope is 39.3 m across. 978 m2 Collecting Area vs 655 m2 for the Thirty Meter Telescope.
Could we have a Full Screen display with Becky next time...not half..
Double Asteroid Redirect Test because it’s impacting a smaller satélite of a larger asteroid. So Double Asteroid 😬
👍🏻👍🏻
Dragon won't be used in films, because that would mean licensing the entity.
Considering you both have cameras and lights, would it not be a much better product if you set those up and shipped some higher quality footage to edit together, rather than a flaky video call? 🙂 I feel like that would be worth the effort
Becky is Ace. :)
Couldn't watch due to audio differences between the two
Don't look up is more documentary than fiction.
At what point does the earth start spinning below my feet if I rise up into the sky???
Far side of the Moon based radio telescopes. It's the only way. To the moon!
If Dr. Becky was my professor, I will always go to CLASS!!!!!!!! #hotforteacher #learnandadmire
British morning TV, the competitor show to the one Dr Becky mentioned genuinely had their own "Don't Look Up" moment, I think it was a climate change discussion and the presenters were trying so hard to get the scientific guest to admit that surely it can't be as bad as they suggested and should we REALLY be as worried as we clearly should be 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
would i prefer a pic or two people interacting together, dont like a still image on one side it dont feel right.
everything is cool otherwise.
Dr. Becky is my favorite astrophysicist. Sorry Neil.
This was great, Dr. Becky is fantastic. The banana and plantain joke... Glad you moved on from that quickly.
20 year's of looking out into space. Even back to close to the big bang. If this telescope doesn't find aliens or a planet that once had intelligent life. I will be very surprised. Although it will be very depressing if all will find are nuclear bomb scarred planets. 🎇💩
kind of outdated, right?
The James Webb Space Telescope is flat.
The beautiful Dr. Becky Smethhurst.
A pic of you.
Hummm...
Could you not make your pic smaller.
Sorry for saying, but it dose not feel right.
Better still.
Could you not take up so much viewing space on the screen.
I agree, Dr. Becky is really cute, but that weird white guy staring out of the whole time is really kind of creepy don't you think?
like... like... like... so hard to listen
