    Very insightful video! I now understand why mechanics say to slowly remove the speedo cable from the trans, as the gear may drop into the transmission case. That circle clip is the only thing preventing a simple gear swap from turning into a calamity!
    BTW - my mk1 Jetta GLi is out by 10 Km at an indicated 60 Km/h (true road speed is 50 Km/h). Guess I got the wrong gear in there. Need to buy the correct speedo gear for my gear ratio (I presume it's the red one since that one follows the GTI part number), along with a new gasket and a one-piece speedo cable for good measure. I'll be sure to reference this video when I order the parts. Thanks Oli!

    Thanks for another thorough video! The OXY box on my '86 Cabriolet is dying and I can't find a source for the one-piece speedo cable to eliminate it. Any suggestions? (Even Techtonics came up emptyhanded!)

    i’ve taken the metal piece holding the speedometer in transmission off and pulling and it won’t come out no matter how hard i pull. How can i fix this?

    • @OlisGarage
      @OlisGarage  Рік тому

      I had the same issue on this car actually 5 years ago. I ended up removing the transmission and then could pry the cable out.
      You see how the part inside the transmission looks in the video. Try to carefully pry with screwdrivers and see if you can get it to move. Maybe try to get it to turn first (pliers or small hammer) and then try to pry it out.

    that damn speedogear lol. Mine fell back into the trans, such a pita to get back out.

    • @OlisGarage
      @OlisGarage  2 роки тому +1

      Noooo!!!! That’s my greatest fear! Haha.
      That’s why I never recommend people top off transmission fluid through the speedo gear hole. I try to remove that cable as little as possible to avoid it falling off.
      Though I will say, my gear is stuck on there pretty tightly. Maybe the clip is worn out on some peoples cars?

      @@OlisGarage its just a shitty design in general. But yes the clip must have been bad. Eh... I drove around with a gear floating in my trans for 2 years. Didnt even know it was there.

    Hi! I have an 87 cabrio (manual) and I have a question about the part number of the cable. Is it 191-957-803 or 171-957-803? or both work?
    thank you so much ;)

    • @OlisGarage
      @OlisGarage  11 місяців тому +1

      The 191 is the single piece. The 171 is half of the two piece. I changed mine from two piece to single to avoid the oxygen sensor counter box. If you want to keep the counter box, then you’ll need the second part of the cable too.

    • @OlisGarage
      @OlisGarage  11 місяців тому +1

      I personally would just buy the 191 single piece and ditch the oxygen counter box if you have it. It literally just makes the osx light come on after 30k miles.

    If my Speedo is reading 7-10% high, could it be due to the cable/gear? Or am I wasting my time going that route?

    • @OlisGarage
      @OlisGarage  Рік тому

      I never have messed with changing those gears, but it could be.
      A few thoughts:
      -Verify your tires are the right size (sticker inside of drivers door should list tire size)
      -check transmission code on bottom of transmission. Then use that to look up ratio of ring and pinion. Ring and pinion ratio is used to determine speedo gear color. Then pull cable and check speedo gear. Sometimes removing the cable is difficult.
      My Speedometer reads about 5mph high at all speeds. I haven’t checked my odometer against my phones gps yet to see if there is any difference there.
      Hope that helps. Unfortunately I don’t exactly know how much of a difference a different speedometer drive gear would make.

    • @chrisladouceur4093
      @chrisladouceur4093 Рік тому

      @@OlisGarage thanks for the detailed reply. Tires are within the same ratio for speedometer. 4S 020 Trans (diesel gearing). Should use the 16 notch white speedo gear, but haven’t pulled it yet to verify or check condition. I’ve checked speedo against a couple gps speedos and, to give an example, when going 60km/h on speedo, I’m actually going about 53km/h. That seems fairly far off to me, but perhaps I just have unrealistic expectations. Was hoping it was something simple to calibrate or correct but sounds like it’s not so easy. Could just be that far off from the factory perhaps
