Making this song into a duo makes it kind of unique in a heartbreak song because you hear both sides of the same heartbreak and feel bad for both.
Not unique The Human League did it in the 80’s with Don’t You Want me Baby, it’s a great classic 80’s song if you don’t know it. And Brad and Lex have done a reaction to it if you prefer to watch a reaction.

I know. But Lex doesn’t understand a lot. She annoys me with her ignorance or her pretend ignorance, which sucks because I like him and his reactions so much. She acts like she’s an airhead and I don’t think she really is, so it’s sad that a grown ass woman thinks playing the dumb role is cute.
My ears are strange like that where I have to listen to a song several times before I start to pick up on the full lyrics. Doesn't matter if it's something harder to decipher like metal vocals or something straight and clear like this song.
I tend to listen to the melodic notes of the main vocals and harmonies like they are a guitar/keyboard or something flowing along with the rest of the instruments....Paying attention to the lyrics seems to come secondary to listening to the song composition and all the layers. Maybe it's because I play instruments so the sounds themselves are the most important to me....maybe it's my ADHD not allowing me to focus on the words haha. I have talked to other musicians and music listeners who go about listening to music in a similar manner....Hopefully that makes sense, but for me personally that is why I rarely pick up the lyrics on a first/second/third listen.
The song is so overplayed, but at the same time I can't help to listen every time. To me it's THE song of the decade.

From what I can tell, he’s saying he never truly felt like the relationship was right, that he felt lonely even when with her, when they broke up he felt relieved but she said they’d stay friends and then ghosted him, changed her number and sent her friends for her belongings (he doesn’t say she was collecting numbers, he says she had her friends collect her records) and wouldn’t talk to him. And he doesn’t understand why when she said they’d stay friends. But then you hear her side and she feels like he mislead her, that he said he was over someone else when he wasn’t and she also felt the disconnect but he always made her feel like it was her fault. That he would do shitty things then twist it to be her fault. At least that’s how she felt, so when they’re over she completely cut him out. It’s basically a toxic relationship between two messed up people and the emotional manipulations and misunderstandings they go through. It’s a cool song because it does show both sides and how both can be both in the wrong and in the right at the same time, yet the song over all sounds almost sweet until you listen to the lyrics.
I think it's more like he's doing going back and forth 'i don't need you i'm fine/you were so much to me how could you' that sometimes happens in a breakup
I don't think there's anything in the song that sounds particularly toxic on the girl's end. The guy claims she said they'd still be friends and that she ghosted him. But that's his claim. He then mentions that she wouldn't get her stuff in person and she changed her number. That's a lot of effort just to ghost an old boyfriend unless he was doing some awful shit. Plus, he makes it sound like he's fine without her her, cool as a cucumber then he's all offended that she seems to have moved on without looking back. He sounds more upset that he is not in control of the situation rather than the actual breakup.

Genius work by Gotye -- Ive learned a lot about him over the years since this song came out-- He is Belgium Australian and is currently living in Brooklyn and is a drummer in a Australian band called The Basics -- He did his solo projects under the name Gotye (his mothers nick name for him ) - His real name is Wouter André "Wally" De Backer and made two absolutely amazing albums in a barn on his parents property by himself (Kimbra is featured only in this one) and is more interested in being creative than being famous - The xylophone bits in the beginning are Baa Baa Black Sheep tune - Yes Its a failed relationship but its because he is mourning the loss of a old love that he couldnt let go of and she didnt stay because no matter how hard she tried he was still thinking about someone else -- He paints himself into the background and she unpaints herself out of his picture -- Brilliant work -- BTW he is working on a new Gotye album and we will see him again! -- A really big favorite song of his for me is Hearts a Mess ua-cam.com/video/MpN1j8R5lZ8/v-deo.html The official video is just as creative -- Gotye dosent believe in suing over copyright material so I wish you would react to this gem too !!!! Cant wait to see what he does next

Yeah I checked out some of their individual stuff after those came out. He had a couple I liked, her style isn't exactly my taste but I could appreciate that it was done well.
Kimbra's "Settle Down" is one of my favorite songs from the early 2010s. It's a perfect pop song.

I'm grateful to this song for introducing me to the incredibly talented Kimbra. "Good Intent", "Come Into My Head", "Settle Down"...great songs and she's amazing in the videos. She also does an astounding cover of "Precious Lord, Take My Hand".
Settle Down is such a great song. I wish Kimbra actually got more play than she did. She kinda hit at the same time as Lorde, and something tells me the industry didn't feel like they needed to promote two quirky New Zealand singers. But damn, her stuff is 🔥🔥🔥. Wish more people knew about her.

Yep! Being hung up on his previous relationship destroys the current relationship and he will likely go on and do the exact same thing in his next relationship. Her part makes me think he is always stuck in "getting over" his previous relationship.

It's an easy song to latch on to certain lyrics and ignore the rest. A lot of people can relate to being in a relationship that ends and that person becomes somebody that you used to know. Not seeing the whole picture in the song and not seeing the whole picture in a relationship.

The song shows both sides, how both sides feel about it and the paint shows they are both in same picture together then she is painted out of the picture and now they are through with each other. Shes out of the picture, I love this song and love the video , so artistic in meaning
This is one of the few music videos where I felt like it was pure art. The song is amazing and such a great collaboration between Gotye and Kimbra. This song really hit me when I was going through a breakup with my fiancé. She has mental issues and it was a long hard battle trying to help her. Her mom passed right before our wedding, and after the funeral she just snapped. But I couldn't reach her, we broke up and she moved back in with her dad. From going from my fiancé to ignoring me, somebody I use to know. It's been about a year now, my heart still hasn't healed.
Both underrated artists. I wish people knew more of their works.

Love this song, and it brings back so many memories - I used to work in the imports & shipping Dept for a UK store. The Imports and Exports Dept. used to sing the Coyte and Kimbra lines when this played on the radio... we shared an office space, and it helped to bring some fun into our working day.
Whenever I hear this and Kimbra’s voice comes in I get goosebumps.

This song was released in 2011 and was very, very, very popular for quite a few years. Everybody and their brother wanted to copy it or had their own version out. Love Gotye. Can't wait for his new album.

the video is good because you see how two people see a relationship. They have different viewpoints. The painting is like a unifier. the relationship. constraining shapes. and as they move apart, the painting vanishes. As he talks about it. the painting grows. Dark colours. mixed with light. so Its a brilliant video. it has SUBTEXT. lots of it.
You should listen to some of Kimbra's songs such as Settle Down, Good Intent, Cameo Lover and Plain Gold Ring. She's very talented.

It's familiar because it was probably the most overplayed song 10 years ago. It even was the Billboard #1 song that year (2012). It's familiar because you heard it even if you weren't trying to hear it. That being said, it's still a great song. Also, from what I understand, Gotye is a one hit wonder and there are memes about how he is now somebody that we used to know.

Love Kimbra's vocal work on this. I had bought this album and was surprised at how good the tracks were on it. Very creative pieces. I buy random stuff all the time hunting for the next great tunes. His vocals in the chorus on this reminds me of Sting.
This is probably the most covered song ever. This is the song "pentatonix" first covered that launched them to fame. Along with the Canadian band "walk off the earth" 5 people one guitar..very cool cover..
There's a band called Walk Off The Earth that did a neat cover of this song where they do all the instrumentation off of one guitar. It's pretty great.

Hey Brad and Lex, you should really check out a solo video by Kimbra (the female singer in the video). She’s a fantastic singer and songwriter and her songs generally have very cool unique grooves and vocal harmonies.
There's some killer live versions of this song. The one acoustic session where it's a bunch of dudes playing with just Gotye is amazing.
At 4 minutes, Lex sits back and reflects. Brad, listens intently as if he's terrified about what Kimbra is about say.

Loved this song when it came out. A great artistic arrangement. Never really understood it on a super deep level, but it seems to connect with those of us who've ever been involved in a unresolved breakup.

It's about sharing something very special between two people and then it disappears. It is heartbreaking and many of us have been there.

Thank you! I was so sure when I first heard this song that it was a cover of a Police number. I was completely wrong, of course, but it's nice to know I wasn't the only one getting strong Sting vibes.
Not to say that Gotye's song is a rip-off or anything - it's entirely original and unique and great - just that it's such a well-executed "throwback", as you say, that it's hard to immediately differentiate it from the invoked works. Which is about as high a praise as you can give an artist who's attempting to trigger those associations.
Moral of the song is that hate isnt the opposite of love, indifference is. When an ex hates you, there's at least a small part of them that you still get to gold on to, but with indifference the only thing you have is the scar they left.
