I met gold dust one time in North Carolina in the late 2000's, was like 8 years old. I had a rare case of inoperable ear cancer. It affected my balance and couldn't walk. I was on remission and I was a big wrestling fan. I remember meeting him and it was just this big, tall, monster of a man. At the time I wasn't even 5 foot.
He spoke in a very soft voice and signed my little autograph book and took a picture with me. He said he wished me well and hoped for a full recovery.
I still remember him being so fucking intimidating, then this soft spoken voice comes out. I swear it was fucking magical.

I'm so glad to hear this, it is something else. I was going through my own hell at the time when I saw him in Wrestling. I was able to see him and others back around the Montreal Screw job. In Vancouver there was such commotion going on the RCMP was called out to get the fans to quiet down. There were some fans taking Brett Harts stance as anti American and they wanted to see Brett being on top. And Goldust I think he was wrestling Mankind.
Just to say it took me more than 20 years for myself to be comfortable with calling myself a gay man. Thanks Dustin.

The secret is that Goldust was never a gay character. Marlena was his wife in-storyline and he just used other wrestlers' homophobia as a psychological weapon. It was actually a surprisingly nuanced character.

He was one of my favorites in the 90s. His act is the very definition of in-ring psychology. The show runners knew the crowd, in general, was homophobic. Creating an ambiguous character like this was genius for playing into that. The goal was to create heat, and the mission was accomplished.
I sometimes wonder about the people in the crowd chanting the f word (the bad one). How many of them are embarrassed looking back. People LOVED that word back then.

The difference between indentured servitude and slavery is the difference between sex and rape: mutual consent. Your boss would pay for your room, board, food and passage to The New World, and in exchange you'd work for him for a set number of years (usually seven) for minimal pay. Then, when your time was up, off you'd go into your new life in The New World.
