The same guns, the same environments, the same gameplay copy and pasted. Style wise it's either ultra brown/gray realistic or overly wacky and cartoony but nothing in between. After a while you get tired of it, because of course you do.
plus every fps is now fast pasted or too slow paced, old siege was a good middle ground. now look at it, the "realistic tactical shooter" doesn't exist and is just slow. there's no middle ground anymore it's just bad
I feel like we share similar opinions on this topic. As I was watching this I was going to bring up titanfall 2, but then you went ahead and mentioned it anyway. Titanfall 2 was the second and last fps game that really captured my interest and made me excited to play every time I booted it up, the first being bf4. And both share something in common. That being mechanics and skill sets that are deep enough to warrant practise and learning. In titanfall I would spend my time practising tap strafing in combat, bouncing off of walls to maintain my momentum all the while needing to efficiently be able to track opponents. Add a very unique set of weapons and tools that can add to that layer of depth and you have an experience with so many facets to it that I can play for hours on end and have a great time doing so because you have that freedom to explore and more importantly, master those mechanics and tools that you have to your disposal. Bf4 has vehicles and movement mechanics that outshine modern battlefields in my honest opinion, but it doesn’t come close to titanfall. For me that is what an fps needs to be interesting. Most modern fps games lack that due to the emphasis on prioritising the players who don’t want to master mechanics and actually earn their successes. Since getting dunked on has most people leaving, where for me I look at who beat me and how, learn from that and use it as a push to keep on improving. It’s one reason why I stay away from cod, and I’m glad. Looking at mw2 which has an instant ttk, no movement potential, grenades, perks, gadgets and killstreaks that instead of simply adding to the depth of the gameplay by offering a tool that you can manipulate to help you, simply acts as a press to win button. I mean a stun grenade that slows your movement and aim speed, which you can’t avoid By looking away from it? Utter bullshit. In titanfall the abilities aren’t press to win (even the titans are fragile in the hands of a lesser experienced player), they simply add more options. Heck even apex is steering towards this design after they nerfed tap strafing, buffed / refuse to nerf aim assist and more. Bf1, v and 2042 all have design elements that reflect this desire to make games easier. Bf1 had its strafe speed reduction, bfV added random recoil conversion and 2042 adds legit wallhacks and turrets. Fps devs now want to provide a dopamine rush for no effort, it’s a poor mentality to have, assuming that you won’t have to ever actually work for success. It’s why I’ve not found any game these last two years that I feel is worth my time, and I want something that peaks my interest to come out. I would pray for a titanfall 3, but as sad as it sounds I wouldn’t be able to bring myself to get hyped for it. If these trends mean anything, they’ll dumb down the mechanics, add brutal SBMM, aim assist with no keyboard only mode, add cringe characters with voice lines and more, killing off another amazing game series. Sorry for the rant, I’ve just been really let down by games these days and yearn for something good too.
100% agree with you there man. I unfortunately missed the train with titanfall, but my experience with apex was very similar to yours. Spent countless hours practicing Ras/Yuki Strafing and it was one of most favorite times of playing video games. Having no skill gap sucks and having the lack of freedom sucks even more. I will say though I do think there is actually something to providing dopamine rush for no effort. Hear me out lol. Players should be rewarded simply for playing the game because it helps with retention and maintaining a healthy playerbase, which is good for everyone not just the greedy execs. But I think the problem is how they execute on this. Instead of taking away freedom to achieve this or making cheese mechanics to do so. Use other means such as better rewards like further character customization, or unlocking new content such as weapons, abilities, characters, skins, etc. Idk if that's the best solution but all types of players have to be kept in mind which can be very hard to do and why games to always lean one way or the other.
@@jonei playing the game should most definitely being rewarding, that’s one reason why Overwatch 2 is flopping so hard, because despite its gameplay changes that most would consider to be positive, there’s no extrinsic motivation like ow1 had. Comp levels take many matches to reveal to you so you don’t feel anything changing as you play. It’s basically impossible for someone playing for free to get any skins due to the time investment, where I as someone who bought the game years ago and haven’t spent a £ since have managed to amass a good collection of items. And even worse, there isn’t even a player level anymore. While I would still enjoy the process of learning awareness, ability usage and more, unless you are able to recognise yourself that you are performing better than you did in the past, there’s nothing really saying that your efforts are being rewarded.0 The most talked about thing on Reddit from what I’ve seen is the lack of progression and rewards, and that is most definitely turning people away. Systems like that do exist in titanfall with its regeneration mechanics. Which boils down to if you get the max level you will start from fresh but unlock some more skins, and even more that you can unlock by levelling in that generation and beyond. That provides that extrinsic goal that means you are working towards something and seeing your actions achieve something. Stuff like that I’m all for, and love it when items can be unlocked through gameplay. So yeah I agree with you too on that front.

I've always wished an fps would have a defualt system where there's a "sprint" function, but its not forward exclusive and you can still do all other actions, including shot. Could have endless layers of other mechanics balanced in and around it. But instead all we get is hold forward faster.
Seems like Devs focus on graphic visuals and sounds and check out when it comes to solid gameplay. I don't mind MW2, but CoD devs just aren't capable of solid map design
I agree with you. Bloodhound is interesting because they take all the elements of tracking mechanics in games and put it into cohesive unit. But at the same time it's just all the tracking mechanics put into 1 cohesive unit XD lol. I think both seer and crypto are good examples of fresh and unique takes on a similar mechanic.
all i need is just a huge mapped adventure game where youre just a normal person. no fast travel, obviously you have like a horse or a carriage, but you cant jump off a cliff to get off of it, and no, you arent gonna sprint through a city full speed. youre gonna walk like a normal person. im so sick of the same copy paste fps game
I think we can look at Overwatch and yes even spell break as an example I think it has less to do with the game and more to do with mechanics, cod similar games are that they are all about the average guy with a gun, but when you look at games like overwatch, is about superheroes with different abilities or spell break mages with diverse magic systems I think the problem is that guns are just boring as a tool even I in cod try to mix mash so many attachments in my gun cause I want to have something that is not just a boom stick, shooting and running is just boring as a mechanic and when we have already evolved past that with games is jarring to play similar cod games where aim and shoot is the only action to take my take is to invent new guns with multiple abilities like how the bow guns work in monster hunter, add abilities that help improve the flow of the fps mechanics like in Titanfall 2 and apex, or remove guns as a tool at this point like in spell-brake or even some heroes like in overwatch
If you change the formula it is no longer an FPS, sounds like you just don't like the Genre anymore. Granted games have sucked last few years but that's down to the devs not getting things right with balance, mouse input, ranked systems, maps and so on, not because we want a different formula.
1:22 i dont know why im so pissed, but the call of duty wall is more a ripoff of r6's wall deployable considering the wall in call of duty came out before rampart did, im pretty sure cause i saw it in mw2019, but i didn't really play advanced warfare 2, 3, 4, etc. so it might've been a lot earlier than that too, but im not sure. There's probably something before that too tbh, but im not gonna find out.
I mean what else can you add to a fps game..? People complain about everything to be honest. When the game is the same they complain. When they do something different people still complain.. like what?
I mean I sort of already explained it in the video. But there are plenty of things that SHOULD be added to FPS games but aren't because resources get allocated to cosmetics for in game purchases, and repetitive content that get's old very fast. They can keep doing the same old thing if they want. They are going to keep getting the same result. Which is pissed off people who quit their game. Things they could add: Better reward systems such as transmog. Open area where players can interact with each other. Duels. Literally any mode besides the ones mentioned in the video, Destiny 2's Gambit is a great example of something extremely different but was success on launch (funnily enough died off because guess what? Lack of meaningful updates). Literally meaningful updates with balancing and meta shifting in mind. League is very good at this, and look at their playerbase/popularity. Massive. Much more than 90% of FPS games frankly. Completly different types of combat or themes. Spellbreak is a good example of this. Taking ideas from other games is something else that can be done. For example Paladins is a FPS game that uses the Moba formula. There is tons of things they could change to improve the game and make it less stale. Yes people complain. But there is a reason for that regardless if it's justified or not, as a developer they must take a look at those complaints and try to understand why they are occurring. But guess what? Most don't. And if they do, it is often ignored (likely due to executives/management not the devs themselves) Which is why we have the problem of games getting boring and stale with a lack of meaningful change. Only when people start to leave do they actually pay attention then implement meaningful change. WoW Dragonflight is a good example. Apex season 16 will be another. And yes it can be bad that some people complain about everything as some complaints are not justified and some people are just salty. But what's far worse is ignoring those complaints and just chalking it up to people just complaining for the sake of complaining, then ignoring it. That is the very heart of the issue at hand.
I'm glad you have seen the light muahahaha! Lol im jk XD. Honestly though when I think about it you do make a good point. Often people do complain about no change then complain when changes are implemented. Some people do literally like to just complain. Which can be problematic because that means the Devs have to sift through and define which complaints are actually valid and it can also discourage them from wanting to make changes again and this is actually another problem that needs to be addressed on the community side of things. But there is always something to read between the lines when the complaints actually make sense. Both sides are valuable to the process. We cannot have a game or receive change without the devs. They cannot make meaningful change without our feedback. But we need to ensure our feedback is valid to help them through the process faster and easier without making them resent us. They have to earn our trust, but we have to give them reason to want to earn our trust in the first place.
Brawl stars is the best game out there😂 it is actually fun when I play with my kids. Love old quake graphics. All new AAA games are made so you have to spend 2000$ or more just so you can play them because the graphics are so demanding looks like graphics are more important than gameplay in these days.
Hmm I'm all for having stats to lower negatives and create meaningful player choice. But I think the problem with that mechanic is that RNG tends to not feel good, and takes away from player agency or ability to counterplay. 90% of players would hate the feeling of randomly losing control at no fault of their own that this generates. So I think only having a stat reduce this is not enough. There would need to be some sort of control added to it. For example let's say it does happen randomly, but when it does there is a small window where you can counter it by pressing the reload button. And I mean a very small window. We're talking .5 seconds. However if you successfully do so it overloads your gun or bypasses the jam. I'm not saying my idea is a good one. But it's just an example of one possible way to fix the problem of taking away from player agency while adding mechanics that are RNG based. Also with this approach we can have more options. For example 1 stat could increase the chances of it jamming, but it also increases the window of opportunity to overload. While another stat can reduce the chance of jamming, but also reduces the window to overload. This allows players to make more meaningful choice and have a larger variety of gameplay without forcing them to be basically stuck with a mechanic they may or may not hate. Again not saying my idea is a good one lol. Just throwing it out there.
@@jonei thank you for the great reply! I really like the window to clear the jam and appreciate the higher level explanation for how this mechanic would affect the game. Maybe your in game progression can affect these things too? Kinda a cross between rpg character development options and a shooter. I'm sure you already have tons of ideas but this "grass roots" approach to making a quality game is exciting.
More like just a behind the scenes and the things I think about when it comes to the FPS genre as a whole lol. Was digging myself into a hole with apex and just needed to change things up.
It's easy to just say someone is wrong without explanation. I'd like to hear your explanation as to why you disagree. Just saying "your wrong" accomplishes nothing in terms of progressing to create a better gaming experience/community.
I find when it comes to fps games they mostly focus on making the game look like real life or they were just lazy making the game What I hate the most is the online play thing, there are kids who have parents who gamble 24 7 those mean teenagers that have a voice deeper than a grand canyon and then you have team mates who don't even know the ABCs.
2:52 Dude, sprint is completely awful and all it does is reduce the skill gap and make the pace slower, by forcing players to become easier targets everytime they need to shoot. Sprint just makes players feel like they're doing something else because of the animations, but the mechanic reduces the skill floor just as much as ADS and aim assist. The fact that you can't sprint on overwatch is one of the few things the game deserves to be praised for. Sprint and ADS are the things that dumb down fps games and you shouldn't be asking for them as if they're a requirement
I play cod for the boys. Such a great way to stay sane during the pandemic and has since cultivated a friend group that would have never existed. I don’t have much to complain about, hated wz2.0 at first but it’s grown on me. Used to play counter strike as a kid so I prefer a mil sim style shooter, but I’m too casual for most games now. Otherwise I gotta be practicing or writing music. Love you Jean-E!
I can understand that all too well! I think these games are still good in terms of quality and they are definitely something that allows you to chill with the boys and can be fun in that right. I may just be spoiled and want something new to experience tbh lmao XD. But I also don't think too casual should be a thing. I feel games should be designed in a way that supports both the sweats and casual players in mind. Might not be easy to achieve but def should be a focus for sure!! Hopefully I can hear some of that sweet sweet cello someday my duuude! I love you!!! :D

@@jonei do you have a discord I could contact you on? I'm very into the movement mechanics behind apex and I have questions about your project!
@@TheGreatBandoodler sorry just saw this, sure thing! my discord is jonei#0036
Wow, I agree with the thesis of the video but jeez some of the points you made were just wrong.
It's easy to just say someone is wrong without explanation. I'd like to hear your explanation as to why you disagree. Just saying "your wrong" accomplishes nothing in terms of progressing to create a better gaming experience/community.
what game is at 1:05?
Shatterline :)
@@jonei Thanks for quick reply, heard good things about this game a while ago. Was driving me crazy finding the name.
Only game i play at this moment is WW3 lol. All others are much more boring AF*
all boring AF. sad for my new pc, only game its ok at this moment is WW3
I find when it comes to fps games they mostly focus on making the game look like real life or they were just lazy making the game
What I hate the most is the online play thing, there are kids who have parents who gamble 24 7 those mean teenagers that have a voice deeper than a grand canyon and then you have team mates who don't even know the ABCs.
only good fps games r tf2 and vr games lol no point in playing a vr game thats not tf2
First view?!?!?
hmmmm.............
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......
ill play cod w you if youre particularly lonely enough to play w me
