Nice! "Turning Japanese" reminds me of the sock hops in high school when the teenage cover band the school hired to play the dance would play this song and play it well. Throw in some "What I Like About You" by The Romantics and "Never Say Never" by Romeo Void and you might find yourself lost in 1982. We thought the same thing that you did about the song back when, but I think the song also reflects some anxiety over the increase of imports of Japanese electronics that began in the late seventies. It also reminds me of a Michael Keaton movie from 1986 called "Gung Ho" directed by Ron Howard, about what happens when a Japanese car company buys an American factory and the American liaison must mediate the clash of work attitudes between the foreign management and native labor.
Loved the song then, and now. Didn't think too much about the lyrics then, but you're spot on about it's real meaning as that's the face that's pulled apparently when.....
It’s easy to miss how GENIUS this song REALLY IS!…. We Westerner’s perhaps have it WRONG!… The Japanese culture has been around a HELL of a LOT longer than US!… I rest my CASE! James W. Reed.

LOL!!!! Yes, mpwa, Fay, my friends and I were certain...as was everyone we knew...what this song was about. The Vapors later denied it, like four years later, but I think they were trying to keep the "secret". ❤❤❤❤ Looking forward to other opinions from folks who were around when this was being played on the radio.
Silly, but lots of fun! I can't help wondering... what do the Japanese think of this song? Honestly, they have got to know about it. But you never, ever, hear from any of them online. I wonder why?
Kirsten Dunst does a fun video with this song. Nice to see you enjoying this happy tune.😄
Great song when I was in Arizona in lots movies

There are all kinds of hidden messages in this video! The two times the singer points are at one eye, and a bunch of long tubular bells. 🤣😂🤣😂

Yeah Dan. I never liked the song probably because it was so over played at the time.
Silly, but lots of fun!

I've wondered about that as well. I just want to point out that the Vapors were British, just in case anyone gets angry. 😁
