This Is What Life Is Like In Small Town Arkansas

- Who would have thought this was Arkansas?
It sorta looks like it might be a touristy town, but it’s becoming more of a place to retire these days. Lots of old timers come here and see how we’re on the edge of the Ozarks and they see the home prices, and they’re like - you know what? I think I might stake a claim in this county.
There’s about 12,000 people here today, and every day someone moves to town. You can’t blame em.
Mountain Home is in between two lakes - the Norfork (ding) and Bull Shoals. This was actually one of the first water resort towns in the region because of all the fishing and boating they have here. There’s even a little bit of shopping, and dining and golf.

This video made my spirit peaceful. It’s so nice to see places left in America that still reflect why this country used to be the greatest. Thank you, for another lovely segment.
Better than smashed windows and passed out people lying on the sidewalk.
Come to Louisiana 😃
You mean when the police would freely hose black people and have their dogs maul them? That America?
Truly said brother 👍🏻⭐️❤️
@@devintaylor8702 which part? I just left Louisiana and moved up here. To NW Arkansas. The crime in Louisiana was getting pretty bad.
I decided to move to Sharp county Arkansas after watching a series of videos including many of yours. I love your presentations and your humor is great. Hardy Arkansas has proven to be a beautiful small town surrounded by other small towns that are as friendly as one could ever imagine. After living in tampa, this visit renewed my faith in humanity, I now am a resident. And I can afford to buy land here!!
Very affordable here.
Nice Brother. Just here from Austin area.
I’m from Fort Myers and am considering Fulton county.
I grew up in Mountain Home. Pretty accurate video. You went down the county road where I grew up! You covered just about everything. Thank you for showing mountain home for the good place that it is.

Love these types of videos, Nick! You show so many places I've never heard of. Mountain Home seems like a great place to be. Loved hearing Vincent's insight on everything!
Thanks!
I had a family member build a resort in nearby Bull Shoals for the past 25 years. This video definitely touched me and was a definite walk down memory lane
You have shown that Arkansas, like most states is a dichotomy of places on the decline and those that are prospering. The best part of Arkansas is the folks that live there.
Thanksfor your reality based videos of places that great and places that stink. It helps us all to avoid bad moves.
"What ? You can read in here!" Is my favorite part. Love Nick's videos and sense of humor. Thumbs up from me 👍
My bestie moved to Mountain home a few years ago. We love it there
I’m a Canadian who’s travelled all around the US by car. Two weeks ago, I was planning on driving through Arkansas to Texas. It was my first time in the state and I can’t say enough good words. I was only supposed to drive through and I stayed two weeks. The scenery and landscapes are incredible in the NW. Sometimes I’d just get in my car and drive for 100 miles because it was so relaxing. The people are so kind and life moves at a much slower place. I think I honestly fell in love with Arkansas and I’m seriously thinking about moving there. What a place
Moving to NW arkansas in a couple months..selling my home in awful Massachusetts and cant wait...its breathtaking to say the least

Please remember why you left a blue state, thanks
Hey that's my home town!! I grew up there and left in the early 2000's a little after high school. That town is a place of two halves. The ones who have and the ones who have not. Growing up there the town had a noticeable divide. So much so that the town had two bowling alleys (The poor one has since fallen apart). And if you had money you went to one and if you didn't you went to the other. Basically a blue collar/white collar divide. Most people I grew up with left for the simple fact that it's really hard to make good money there. Crime is usually related to meth in one way or another. But hardly an issue. It's a great place if you want a slower lifestyle. You have two great lakes and two great Rivers (White and Buffalo). So tons of outdoor stuff. The retirement community use to be at odds with the locals pretty bad like fighting against improvement to the schools, park improvements, etc. Basically if it didn't help them they didn't care or wanted it to impact their retirement funds. Also Bull Shoals was called Little Chicago, not Mtn Home. The best pizza in the area is Bush's Pizza in Bull Shoals. Gaston's use to be the big getaway for country stars like Willie Nelson and the like. But once the country stars went to wearing bedazzled pants that kinda stopped.
Nice info
I kind of figured that, this video "sugarcoted" the lifestyle there. It's still Arkansas...tornados and such, and heat and humidity that make summers almost unbearable. Nice place tho... I guess.
@@stillnotwoke it really is a nice place. But it does have some quirks. Tornadoes up there are slim. Too many hills. Heat and Humidity, well it's the south so it is what it is. And the guy did his best. Small towns you don't get much in the way of info unless you've lived there. At a glace lots of things will be missed.
I grew up in Hot Springs
It's Arkies and transplants, that's what it is.

They've got it good there. Hope they control the growth. Don't let it get too big. We need more open spaces like this.
Don't know what you're talking about with the home prices. There's literally one house for 60k on Zillow right now and it's a prefab home that's falling apart at the seams. The next house up on the list is just over 100k and is only fairing a little better...

Been loving your videos, my wife and I are heading to NW Arkansas next week to start looking for a new home.
Oh!😂😂😂 LMAO at the way you said the lady was talking. YES, that's the way we talk. I started skiing on Lake Norfork 57 years ago at the age of 6 and have great memories. It took living in Houston TX for over 40 fighting felons on a daily basis to truly appreciate living in Arkansas and growing up on the lake. I remember when there was only a few stores in MH, Henderson was mostly where people went to camp. Your video is so real. Just got back from camping at Cranfield and looking forward going back next month. My father lives there now. Your video is realistic to how people are there. I have to share your video with my father.
Ok Tresa!
So, let me interpret this, you spent over 40 years fighting felons? Huh? What a life you must have lived!

A few years of my Professional Engineering career was spent working in Arkansas. My career took me all over the USA so I got to evaluate a lot of places for retirement. Arkansas was near the top of the list. Mountain Home was the second place on that list. Hot Springs was clearly my number one. The main reason back in 2007 was the nearby medical support in Littlerock AK. If Mountain Home now has a University and upscaled Medical facilities it may be number one. When making retirement plans for you and spouse make plans that one of you will likely be a widowed person in the fullness of time. Retirement location will be driven by the kids jobs locations.
Very thoughtfuI commentary. What do you think about the humidity IeveIs there? I've been to Fort Smith, Mountainburg, Branson, but never in the summers and faII when I suppose the humidity is the worst. I wouId greatIy appreciate knowing what you think on the subject. I'm a semi-retired teacher here in Nevada. Cheers
@@staralioflundnv I live just outside of Springfield MO a couple hours away but have land/small place on Bull Shoals on the west side that i spend about 25% of the time, not too far as the crow flies to Branson. I grew up in MN (but have lived for the past 30 yrs overseas in some really humid places) so when it comes to humidity it is really a personal matter. Generally speaking, I think one's body can get acclimated to what are considered high degrees of humidity or dryness after a season or 2. For me personally, i don't think the humidity is too bad in a place like this. Sure, it will have some periods of high humidity but not suffocating like FL and parts of TX. This area is kind of a confluence of the northerly jet stream and southerly jet stream so it has a nice balance to it imo. Evenings are mostly pleasant. i probably only use my AC 30% of the time during the evenings in the summer. One thing that i was surprised about this area is that it is sunnier than i thought, even in the winter. You may want to have a visit in June/July and then again in January -February.
@@staralioflundnv. I live in S. Arkansas just 18 miles from Louisiana and there’s a marked difference in the humidity in Northern Arkansas compared to S. Arkansas. If you don’t like humidity, don’t consider S. Arkansas. It’s brutal!

Living in Wyoming and looking for a place like this to retire to. Mountains, rivers and lakes rank real high for us. Cost of living and crime are the #1 on our list. This sounds hopeful.
Oh my gosh, you are Iooking to Ieave Wyoming? That is a state that I am just starting to inquire about for potentiaI retirement. Can I ask about the high and Iow points of your current state? It wouId heIp me figure out if it shouId even be considered. I'm more a ruraI, country, near-wiIderness sort of person, NOT Iooking for hustIe bustIe IifestyIe and crazy traffic. Thank you.
I'd suggest Washingtons North Cascades and the small towns on either side of the pass, which closes every winter, isolating the beautiful mountains, lakes and rivers from regular summer tourists. COL is reasonable if frugal and simple. Crimes by homeless campers (trespassing, theft) is creeping up and most homeowners are armed - there's still bears, elk, bobcats wandering about!
@@staralioflundnv I love Wyoming just so you don't discount the state. But winters can be long and very cold. Not to mention the wind.....
@Star Ali Mistriel Do yourself a favor and spent a week or two in the winter before you pull the trigger. People seriously underestimate how much of a factor the wind is here. Also, winters are bit gloomy compared to our neighbor CO.
Winds and winters don't scare me. I Iived in White Pine County, Nevada for years, about a 45-1hour drive from EIy, and managed through some serious weather.

It was scary how that older gentlemen casually mentioned homelesss people...Arkansas has the worst landlord/tenant laws in America...they are not kind to the poor at all so im not surprised that it got worse after covid smdh 🥺
As a Californian I'm shocked a democratic state does this to their homeless 😑
It got worse, much, much worse, across the country after lockdowns and business shutdowns. Take a look at the homelessness in Seattle, Portland, SF, LA, and now San Diego. And that's just the west coast. Where in the US are "they" kind to the poor?
Im thinking fishing aint your calling! Nice place👍

Nick, saw this today. Family from the ozark region, cousin was post master there in Mountain Home. Couple things , well, one, drove me nuts , you fishing. Using a closed face reel and rod,Upside Down!! And not hitting the button to cast, no wonder it went out 5 feet from the dock. If you haven’t already, jump over to Mountain View Arkansas , especially in August. They have picking and a grinning going on. Right in the towns square. People just pull up a lawn chair and listen, folks from the hills come down play some down home country toons. You’ll enjoy it.

We attended MARIAN DAYS at Carthage Missouri from Louisiana go through Arkansas. We had to go through a pass, sitting in the car could look down into the abyss right next to the road that we were afraid of. From there we choose another route, although a little further but felt safer and only once did we pass through Arkansas again. 😄
That's my old school bus route!
Just kidding, AR has a hundred roads like that

My family has been coming to Lake Norfork near Mountain Home for 4 generations. My great great grandfather was an engineer for the Utah Mining Company in the 40s and helped in the construction on the dam, and we'll as Hoover and Grand Coolie, he loved this area so much that he built a cabin here on his own in 1959, which served as a vacation home for my family ever since. My girlfriend and myself recently decided to to renovate and update the cabin and live here while we do it. I've been coming to this lake for 37 years and love it here. Granted, we are right on the lake and have a private dock, so we try not to go "into town" but once every 2 weeks at the most. 8 months out of the year it's very quiet, no traffic, no sirens, nothing, it's peaceful. My neighbors always help eatchother for free most of the time, literally help eatchother build houses. Everyone is friendly, keep to themselves unless you ask for help with something
