I’ve long thought (and professed to anyone who would listen) that “since I’ve been loving you” is The greatest blues song ever recorded. Some of my friends would say I’m crazy but then I would just break it down for them and show em why. Great stuff here. You’re a fantastic player and teacher.
Such a great lesson on this epic track. Jeff M = super talented + very generous to have shared this 'knowledge'. The chord substitutions are sensational and show why Jimmy Page is such a legend.
Thanks for posting this, can’t wait to dive into it!.. I had the honor of meeting Page once and I didn’t sleep for a week after that lol A lot of players say he’s sloppy..no one was saying that back in the day when he ruled the world!!. . That started when all these technical players started coming out..
So true. I’ve been learning this song for 4 years, so there’s lots more for me. I also must add that I’ve broken more strings playing the leads in this song than any other song I play.
Those initial chords--with the flanger guitar effect, immediately turned my Mind to Robin Trower, and made me want to hear some Robin Trower-style Blues soloing!... :)
Thanks for the video Jeff. I’m only just getting into Page and his amazing guitar work. This is what I love about playing the guitar. There is always something to discover and things to learn to widen your music perspective ❤😊
I totally agree. I’ve started playing again after having had a break for many years and I’m learning so many new things. The journey only ends at the end.
@@simonwhalley1743it’s a fantastic journey to be on. This song alone has opened up so many possibilities! Keep strumming and enjoying the guitar my friend 😊
Thank you for your post! This is a great breakdown of the 12/8 feel on slow blues (context), chord substitution (texture) and Jimmy’s great arrangement (choices) of this KILLER tune. Just getting acquainted with a touch of music theory and trying to integrate 35 years of noodling, faking it, and dumb luck locating on the fret board! Can’t wait to jam this one! Liked and Subscribed...keep’m coming!
The way you teach this and that fact that I found this makes my day. And he's not always sloppy. He's not sloppy in dazed and confused in 1973. To be honest I've done a lot of research and of course listening. But I think JP is in his prime in 73
Jeff, like you this is one of my most favourite Led Zep songs. Thanks so much for doing this. This video explained the structure of the song really clearly. I love it. Rich Tasmania, Australia.
I've known plenty of guitarists that don't really address the chord changes and stay with the pentatonic for the I chord. I wouldn't know the chord had changed except for the bass player. I always thought it was so cool sounding when Page played the changes, and 45 years later I can't help but pay attention to the chord changes.
My favorite toy that I ever owned I got for Christmas when I was 5 years old in 1974, that was the Evil Knievel start toy that rode a motorcycle you winded up on the ramp. Things kind of suck nowadays, just saying.
Jeff great since I've been loving you lesson you got it man you nailed it to me that's one of the best rock blues that and loan me a dime the two best blues ever have you ever seen the Led Zeppelin concerts that they put on UA-cam the vintage cars some of them are not good quality but since I've been loving you is always in there in the first half hour even if the quality isn't that good screaming versions of page and he really changes it up each time it's amazing thanks
Very very thanks, i know you since RObben Ford ( i discover RF in 2017, and i m a big fan now) talk about you, and i love you re feeling, and your vidéo. COngratz and thanks for your generosity.

Secondarily, I am always interested in the Life & Times of The Stig, Evel Knievel, Super Dave Osborne or whatever the name of the spaceman in the background is. Today, it appears a space walk to fix a nut was scheduled.
"Working from 7 to 11 every night really makes life a drag. I don't think that's right! " My favorite Led Zeppelin song, and they sure have lots of great songs to pick from! 🎸 🇨🇦
Hands down the best blues piece ever done by Jimmy with a y and the boys!. Complete with 2 step bends! Though, as an engineer, if I could go bk in time, I’d bring a can of WD40 to Bonzo on that day!
I'm so glad I stumbled across this! I've enjoyed your TrueFire stuff. In the official Zeppelin songbook there were a lot of chords in this tune. But like Stairway they didn't represent the song well.People knock the third album but I actually prefer it to Houses Of The Holy, which I hated the SOUND of the record. Everything is so compressed and the drums do not have that Bonham low end and heavy handed snare.(however if you lower the album a semitone it sounds like a garage band LIVE Zep- better than bootleg). Thank You for confirming Pagey's genius and keep rock'n that Les Paul.
Thanks for checking out the video. Man, I had that Zep book as a kid too and was always frustrated by it. Kinda right but missing stuff. Funny, you, me, and everyone else who bought that book!
@@JeffMcErlain However ,if you want to practice unusual chord shapes, you can get a close sounding version of the Rain Song in standard tuning. But it's a lot of work considering how simple the song is in Page's tuning!
My favorite Blues guitar playing has Always been the studio version of Ritchie Blackmore's "Lazy" off the "Machine Head" album of Blackmore's band, "Deep Purple"... I ALSO LOVE Blackmore's Blues playing on Deep Purple's LIVE album, "Made in Europe", during a "break" within the GREAT song, "You Fool No One!" Mr McErlain mentioned the early reviews (before cracking up). This is probably the one, by Lester Bangs, I kid you not, in Rolling Stone. ' “Since I’ve Been Loving You” represents the obligatory slow and lethally dull seven-minute blues jam' www.rollingstone.com/music/music-album-reviews/led-zeppelin-iii-112284/ Bangs was ahead of his time, it was six years (this side of the water) before it became fashionable to despise those who could actually play their instruments.
You have some really awesome amps behind you but your going through your DAW and it sounds awesome. I have my amps as well and I use my daw line6 hx stomp and yeah man it is amazing, never thought I'd say that......
Wow, what an awesome part, always loved that tune... Simple but at the same time... Not, at all simple lol, it has a beautiful feel to it.. Hard to emulate but you got it!
I've been working on that song the lead part and the Rhythm you could break it down for me I appreciate it thank you keep up the good work and Merry Christmas
Hi Jeff, Greetings from NZ. I really am enjoying the lesson but am struggling to follow some of the less basic chords. I wonder if in the future a chord sheet with the variations of E#7 etc. that you use was also included. Will be checking out your Truefire courses when I feel I can keep up :)
Back in the day I listened to this song on my Koss Pro 4A headphones probably 100 times when this album came out. Damn if it doesn't remind me of Janis Joplin's Cheap Thrills Ball and Chain!!!
"Since I've Been Lovin You " is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs exactly because it adds those cool chords to a Blues. How creative and soulful!
