    - Performers: Frans van Ruth (piano), Ruña 't Hart (violin), Isa Juárez (viola), Sam Shepherd (cello)
    - Year of recording: 2013 (live)
Quartet in A Major for Piano, Violin, Viola and Cello, Op. 5, written in 1867.
    00:00 - I. Moderato assai
    12:55 - II. Sostenuto
    25:03 - III. Vivace
    32:46 - IV. Allegro giojoso
Hendrik Witte was a Dutch professor, composer, Royal and municipal director of music, and conductor of the 'Musikverein' in Essen. He significantly shaped the musical life of the city of Essen.
The printed compositional work of Witte includes compositions with and without opus numbers. The early works were written during the stay in Leipzig. The best-known compositions from this period are the Waltzes for piano (four hands) from 1868 dedicated to Brahms, the award-winning Piano Quartet in A major, Op. 5 (1867), and the Quintet for Horn and Strings (1871). Wittes compositions are written in the style of the "Leipzig School". They contain, in the words of Gaston Dejmek: "a balance of delicate formality, a liquid harmoniously bound phrasing, the sensitive expression of the vocalisation".
In this piano quartet, the sweeping piano arpeggio at the beginning reminds one of Schubert's "Trout" quintet, and the last movement has a small fugato section with a rousing coda section.
The piano quartet is dedicated: "Carl Reinecke zugeeignet".

Hey, I am very surprised to find this, it was a great and inspiring time playing with Frans, Ruña and Sam. Thanks for posting, very nice memories from my time in Amsterdam Conservatory. Many greetings, Isa

+Isa Juárez I'm happy you like this, it was a great find to listen to some music by Hendrik Witte, almost nothing by him has been recorded. Frans is a great promotor of obscure Dutch music indeed. Cheers! :)

Thank you very much for posting this. It's just the kind of thing that makes youtube so great: the chance to hear something really good that I'd never have discovered otherwise.

It's rare that I come across a composer that I've never heard of!. This piece is very worthwhile.

Beautiful piece. Absolutely lovely. Why are some composers so neglected? We all tend to pick "winners" because that is a prevailing cultural predilection. And of course, our desire for "revolutionary" outpourings can override the appreciation of true artistic merit. Thank you for posting this not so shocking piece.

This should be performed more often! It's a pity the composer is underrated.

+Mr. DSCH (ClassicalComposer09) Underrated is an understatement I think, haha. Rather, completely ignored!

The long-awaited! I absolutely love this piece! Beauty and development in the true essence of romanticism with appropriate sharing of difficult parts amongst all instruments!

+ClassicMusicVids Yes! I'm happy and a little amused that you like this piece so much, since it is so very obscure, even in The Netherlands :) I only hope to once get a professional recording of this piano quartet!

+olla-vogala Pretty much aside from this there is pretty much no performance out there of this piece. It is obscure no matter where one looks!
The piece has all of the makings of chamber masterpiece: memorable themes, complex sections for all players, and thorough but not overdone developments. And don't forget a movement written in Phrygian mode!
Perhaps much of my love comes from being a composer in my own right!

I completely agree! Well, spread the word of this composer to performers you know, so maybe we can have the possibility of listening to another Witte recording!

I have yet to be a performed composer yet! I am only honing the skills and have not even approached any publishers yet despite having several "complete" (aka crappy) works. But I still encourage folks to listen to your page when I can!

Big quartet. I was finally really won over to it in the finale. Very easy to like first theme and then a welcome fugato. I also liked the scherzo with its hemiola rhythms (duplet rhythm in triple time -- something that Robert Schumann loved to do). On first hearing I was less convinced of the first two movements. Was the second movement a set of unnumbered variations? I wasn't sure. I guess I should hear it again.

The main body of the first movement is marked Allegro con fuoco. The opening Moderato assai is just an introduction.

The theme from the second movement reminds me of 'Es ist vollbracht' from the Johannes-Passion by Bach.

Please watch this at the lowest quality only (144p) since it's just for the music, which is much more ecologically responsible than at a higher rate.
Watching this at 240p (which is unnecessary for listening purposes), will increase the bandwith by double to almost tenfold! At 1080 the bandwith is augmented by a factor of 100!
The use of digital technology accounts for 4% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, as much as the emissions from the world's truck fleet.
Of that, a BIG part comes from livestreaming videos, mainly 3 sources : UA-cam, Netflix and porn.
Let's enjoy this beautiful music by being aware and responsible, doing our little part in decreasing our carbon footprint and protecting this wonderful planet for the generations to come.
