      Unless you are at a funeral.....Black Suit with White shirt = Car Driver, Waiter.... DO NOT DO IT! You don't look good in a "business" environment.. you look ill informed. In Business environment Navy/Charcoal is by far the way to go. You can't wear brown or burgundy shoes with Black suit, but you can with Navy/Charcoal. You won't be mistaken as a waiter wearing a Navy suit, but be prepared to take orders wearing that Black suit.

    I didn't choose a black fabric even when I had my dinner jacket and formal trousers made. I went with a midnight blue Zegna Trofeo which, in artificial light or photographs, appears "blacker than black." It's all about how the fabric absorbs or reflects light. For weddings (evening), I like a dark navy suit or charcoal gray suit with a white shirt and "wedding tie" - something silvery looks great. Maybe a sliver grenadine or tiny woven macclesfield. Black suits are for mafioso and funeral directors.

Can't dress down the look with black like with navy blue. Dress it up with black shoes, dress down with brown, and shirt and tie combinations are almost limitless with navy

    Tanner, I always enjoy your videos and I certainly appreciate blue as a base suit for starting out however overwhelming I prefer a well tailored black wool suit. I find it very flexible and it also shows confidence or even gravitas wearing something that stands out and yet it can morph into anything. White shirt and dressed up formal, but with printed shirts, stripes, paisley , checks, dark and loud solid coloured shirts it can be anything. And of course virtually every tie works. Black or burgundy shoes, chelsea boots. For me black suits always generates compliments the most from women. Back to black. Very chill. . I disagree, if you're only going to own 1 suit black is the most versatile. Wedding, funeral, job interview, date, and more. It's the only color that can do everything. Id say to get a black suit first (like a full set, vest, pants, and jacket), and then when you start buying more you can branch out. There are a million ways to style the pieces of a black suit.

    To explain that wind in that part of Utah. When there are tall buildings surrounding a somewhat small area then the wind will go around the building on the sides and not over the buildings, that only happens when the building is small. So Utah being located around the left center of the United States not only do you get winds from the normal south east, you also get wind from Canada and the Pacific Ocean. Cheers m8.

As a started working in menswear everyone openly bashed that combination so badly that my one pair of black shoes only got worn occasionally with grey. A navy suit will often make you look like you are a lawyer or a banker, which is something only lawyers and bankers desire for. ;-)
    Most other men don't buy a suit anymore to wear at an office. If I look at the few occasions about 80 to 90 pct of the men that are not a lawyer and not working in a corporate bank will still wear a suit, a black suit , if I was to buy one and only one suit, does it all.
    Funeral? Black! Wedding? Black! Very fancy restaurant? Black! Prom? Black! Fantasy Fare? Men in Black!
    So in this case, I would recomend a lot of man to start with a black suit, they will never need another suit anyway.

      By "all black" I meant AAALLL black - black tux, black shirt, black tie, black pocket square, if you can even see it. Just not an interesting look to me. Perhaps in person if there was enough going on with a variety of textures it might work. In the photos and on TV you can't really tell.

      Gotcha! Yeah I'm definitely not a fan of the completely black look - even with adding the textures.

    Yep.. Classic. Black suit, not great. Funny thing is my navy blue suit Looks black when in poor lighting conditions. It's just that dark shade of blue. In sunlight etc it radiates blue a little but dark, almost black.

    what would you wear to a funeral?

    • @MrCrazy-vs8kn
      @MrCrazy-vs8kn 8 років тому +7

      Black suit. If you dont own one dark grey or dark navy. Black tie. White dress Shirt with barrel cuff and pointed, wide spread or tab collar. Black oxfords or maybe black chelsea boots. Black wayfair sunglasses. Depending on climate black or dark grey overcoat and black scarf. Black leather gloves. Silver tiebar. White straight pocket square.
      What do you think about that?

      At this point, I'd wear black - but just because I have enough need to own one for other events. A deep charcoal is plenty appropriate for a funeral but also more wearable in the business world.

    I often have heard not to start with black, but what about taking a black suit and using bold color "dress" shirts, like pinks, and silver to add variety? I use quotes because I recently heard that dress by definition had to be a light blue or white. Anything else is casual? Well, how is this this different than a navy or gray suit with the intention of often using white or blue shirts?

    • @MasculineStyle
      @MasculineStyle  7 років тому +1

      It creates a stronger contrast and often looks more like you're attending a prom than actually dressing casually. A super formal color like black and then a super casual look like a brightly colored shirt are just too far apart from each other.

    • @Ratlegion
      @Ratlegion 7 років тому

      Do you think it has the same effect at a casual occasion if you where you only wear a bold shirt and a black vest, or should vests also try to avoid black as well?

    • @MasculineStyle
      @MasculineStyle  7 років тому +1

      Vests are even harder to pull off well as a casual piece as they're derived from an even more formal three-piece ensemble. If you were to do a black vest out of a cloth with some serious texture, you might be able to pull it off.

    As always, a great video!
    A small question (shown in the video too), what is your opinion on combining light brown shoes with dark colored trousers or even suits. May I wear tan shoes with a navy blue suit or charcoal grey suit? And to take it further, may I wear dark blue or dark green chinos with light tan dress shoes? Is this kind of contrast desired or even acceptable? Thanks!!

    • @MasculineStyle
      @MasculineStyle  8 років тому +1

      I agree with hieuwey - the darker the fabric color, the tougher it is to pair with light shoes. I believe the main reason a deep navy works better than a charcoal is because of different tones - warm vs cool, etc.

    Any suggestion for those who MUST have a black suit for their job? (Specifically, Clergy) Is there anything we must be aware of when buying a black suit?

    • @tiredoffools8929
      @tiredoffools8929 6 років тому

      When Buying a Black suit, just make sure it is made of WOOL, and most importantly that it FITS. If it doesn't fit get the suit altered/tailored to fit. There is nothing wrong with wearing a BLACK suit when it is part of a uniform or a profession that requires it (i.e clergy, driver, server..etc.)

    • @davidcattin7006

      Personally I don't like it. It really doesn't look good, it looks like you couldn't think up anything else. Tired of seeing it on the red carpet. These men have stylists so there's really no excuse. Plus all the black just blends together and you can't distinguish tie from shirt from jacket....

      Tanner Guzy They both fit well. I am a history major interested in museums and there will be one or two tables that are really relevant to what I am studying.

    • @MasculineStyle
      @MasculineStyle  8 років тому +1

      Hmmmm that's tough. In this case, you're probably better off leaning towards the black. I would imagine the "museum tribe" is fairly conservative and will appreciate a look that leans more towards formal than casual.
