Thank you! This has been so helpful! I was on the verge of throwing my computer out the window. Kept getting a sample rate change in Cubase mucking up projects and causing crashes all the time (every 5 to 10 mins) and these changes seem to have fixed it - I got an hour out of the system with no crashes or glitches!

I had no idea. This has been the best tutorial I've ever followed! It was short and to the point, as you gave the how and why... along with giving warnings of what not to do. I hope you do more tips on how to better use DAW's. I'll also be downloading DCP Latency Checker. BIG UP's!!! :)

Thanks for the performance tweak regarding letting windows handle visual effects. Have a dedicated gpu but always stripped this back as a matter of course. Windows looks nicer and I havn't seen any performance dip.

Optimized my PC and had a look on the internet to see if i missed something.. but gone a bit further than your basic settings.. Working for over 20 years in the IT and make music in my spare time..started with Cubase on a Atari ST (Midi only) now using Cubase 5 on a Intel Dual-core PC whats been dedicated only for making/editing music, no other software and no network (internet).. using USB for my Sound/recording system. Controllers and Synth's (USB -> Midi) can use up to 50 tracks in cubase before the CPU can't handle it no more, but not happens often.. .
Some tips to get the most out of a (old) system by dedicating it...
Start with a clean installation (W7 SP1) using a new HDD, first Disable all hardware your not using in the BIOS like: Power management, ports, ide controllers (if your only using sata) when installed, connect to Internet, check if there are drivers missing (device manager) and install the drivers that are missing, use the latest drivers for Sound/VGA, Activate windows and disconnect Network, if you keep it off the internet there is no need for Windows update's and you won't need Internet security (virus-scanner/firewall) you can disable the Network interface now also (Bios)
Use all the tips shown in this video, and also have a look at the list of services, press Win-key+R (run) and type: services.msc, you have a list showing what services are running, by double click (dialog) you can disable startup: Services you don't need (if not connected to network/internet) you disable most are Network related (IP-helper/DHCP/DNS) just read info and if its about internet/network you won't need it.. other services that can be disabled: Spooler (printer) Defender, windows update..
Next uninstall all windows features you won't need (control panel: programs..) and disable all notifications from security center.. do a reboot .. and Install all your Software your using (DVD/USB stick) and if your using ASIO install ASIO4all..When you got it how you want it make a (Ghost) image so if something goes wrong (HDD crash) you can restore it in no time..
Last Tip: Use the HDD for Windows only (>160GB/7200rpm) and use a 2nd drive for all the DATA you working with, and have a 3th USB Drive you use to store backups of your DATA (and a backup of the (Ghost) Image, and you can keep in a safe place.
