Agreed, the road tax situation is farcical. I have a van and a car, I'm the only one who drives them, and it's close to £100 a month. Annual mileage well under 10k these days. Calculate the crazy costs of administering this tax at DVLA (SORN, car changes, reminders etc) and surely it's got to be better for everyone if the tax just goes on fuel prices. Stops the huge amount of road tax evasion at the same time, and catches the foreign registered cars/trucks.
It actually encourages you to drive more, knowing that your money in tax is going to waste otherwise. Fuel tax is by far the fairest way, but we pay enough on that already.
If the nutters in our govt is serious about ev's then they don't fuel up so fuel tax won't work and if rd tax is only for evs everybody will want diesel/petrol cars 😂😂😂😂😂
Not too shabby, love cars with that configuration, had an Imp for a short while and Skoda Estelle, great fun dragging a trailer tent to Combe Martin, overtaking all the 'posh cars' dragging 5 berth caravans. Got character, love deep dish steels with fat tyres. Where's your front spots gone? Weight reduction for more oomph? (Range Rover 11.3mpg, Government love the double tax it'll collect).👍😁🇬🇧
You crazy man Geoff, your tuner got a Range Rover, now we are getting close to getting that "Geoff Steals Cars" video that shows why they won't be insured anymore, which is scary in it's own right.
My first car was Renault 8, 1964 model I got in 1973, and had four none servo disc brakes from the factory in 1964, and Michelin x radial tyres, miles in front of Morris Minors and the like.
Not bad for an old girl. The little Renault needs to remain on the fleet. Your correct at the end regarding fuel in modern cars. To save a bit of money I decided to run my modern car on the E10 standard fuel, but realised after a few weeks I had terrible running, kangaroo-ing, occasional rough running and even stalling. Switched back to E5 super unleaded and it's running smoother and has less of the issues above.
The Renault is only 8 : 1 compressing I believe. Your engine will probably run better with regular fuel. High octane is just a rating for resistance to knocking / pinging. Regular fuel actually has a higher BTU content than high octane. A couple of guys I worked with were always tinkering with their engines and found out that they could do many mods to their engines for more power but using high octane didn't help at all unless this changed compression, I.E. new piston and head work. Keep up the good fun! Always fun to drive a slow car fast as they say.
With a full service and new filters, points and plugs, & a play with the advance settings etc, you might just gain that loss back again! Or change to an electronic ignition system. If you really want to do a full restoration on the engine then new valve springs and a re seating of the valves will make a difference as will a cleaning out of the ports!
Get the air pump from a 225 CI Chrysler slant six. Put it along the front drive belt. Hook it up to the carb intake. Made a Canadian Renault Le Car a little stoplight drag racer.
Chrysler your as old as me. Them air pump got ripped off and thrown away, good luck finding one. It would be funny to see if it might jump 2 hp+. though. I want him to race a go cart on a track. Just a 5 hp China clone of a Honda. just to show why we don't need big cars with 500 hp. I love them and have them, but a 4-seater go cart with say 20hp is more than enough to do 140 kph. No blistering 0-60 but it could. This also would make for a good Ev Golf cart motor swap with a small Genni to charge it nonstop. A few batteries a inverter and off you go. Best days of my life were riding my minibike to school through the ditches on .10 cent a week in the 70's. Herer in Canada they wanted 1 dollar a week and my single mother saved money letting me get that Artic cat leopard skin seat and burnt orange glitter paint 5 hp bike for my savings cutting lawns.
