Many of you asked me to review Taemin's new song 'Criminal.' This is my first time hearing Taemin's music outside of SuperM. I've linked my other reaction's to Wonho's 'Losing you' and 'Open Mind" below:

The whole album concept is 'Listening Thriller' so the storyline behind the songs is so important and the keyword of Criminal is 'stockholm syndrome'.
Taemin is a member of Shinee(you already know that) and Shinee is one of the legendary groups in kpop history. Usually, there are roles in groups like rapper, vocal, dancer in kpop but in Shinee, there are 5 vocals, 5 dancers, and 5 rappers.
Shinee has gotten their reputations with their great harmony and fantastic live performances. I hope you see some concert videos to get to know REAL Shinee.
Taemin is the youngest member of Shinee and debuted at 14. He is the first one who debuted as a solo artist in SM Company so SM calls him the ACE. Fans and critics regard him as the essence of SM which means he is the ideal human form of Suman Lee the boss.
Shinee is so-called the idol of the critics and Taemin is the idol of idols. A lot of kpop idols has grown up with his(their) music and now wanna be a superstar like him.
I recommend you several songs like Danger, Drip Drop, Press Your Number, Move, Want and Day and Night(he made this song).

Move, Want, and Drip Drop are some of Taemin's best imo. And somehow he just gets better and better as we see from Criminal :O he's got amazing Japanese songs too

Shinee is an iconic group that continues to inspire and influence many of the groups that are popular today. They are know as the Princes of Kpop and their live concert performances are legendary. Taemin has been a Kpop superstar for almost half of his life, since Shinee's debut in 2008 when he was 14. It's funny to see the younger stars nearly faint when a Shinee member is present. They're like Kpop gods.
Taemin is known as the ace of ace of kpop and the mj of kpop. He has debut at 14 years old with shinee, the legendary group the members are in the military.
SHINee debuted in 2008. Taemin was 14 at the time. Their discography is massive. I don't know where to start recommending.
My fav albums are 1 of 1, Misconception of Us and Married to the Music.

His most famous song and choreography is Move. Want is also very popular and probably the most similar to this song. I love Thirsty as well. His debut song was Danger - and it is great of course :) And there are his Japanese songs - for instance Famous and Under My Skin (a beautiful ballad). The choreography to Sayonara Hitori is wonderful. Then there is Sexuality, Drip Drop, Flame of Love, Day and Night... He doesn't have bad songs.

This entire album is amazing.
I've seen a lot of suggestions but not one for Press Your Number it's personally one of my favorites of his. I'd recommend the 2nd preformance video of it ✨ the mv is good but the performance video is just amazing.

Taemin is amazing, he is a real King of seductive, sensual music, his voice was practically made to sing these type of songs. His adlibs or layered vocals are always on point, he has amazing musical instinct and he is a very sensitive artist. You should absolutely dive into Taemin’s music. Start from Danger, which was his solo debut and already there he showed a real class and artistry! Songs to check out next are Move, Want, Thirsty and Famous, also Press Your Number is an excellent track and MV was directed by the same man as Criminal. Thank you for a very good and detailed reaction, I thoroughly enjoyed it! :) ACT 1 is part one of his Never Gonna Dance Again album, consists of 9 fantastic tracks (honestly this album is a masterpiece!!!).

thank you for reacting to Taemin. He really is the most complete K-Pop artist out there. A lot has already been suggested in the other comments - I'll add his dance practice videos to the mix. He is considered the best dancer in K-Pop, watching him dance is watching art. There are often also different versions of his Music Videos, it's absolutely worth checking them all out as well, while one version is more focused on the storyline, the other version then focuses on the choreography (e.g. Move, Flame Of Love, Press Your Number all have different versions)

Honestly, it's so cool to hear you say you have first seen Taemin through SuperM! I saw them perform in Seattle, and they are absolutely incredible live, they all have such incredible stage presence, like you said, their energy is amazing!! The group really seems to be having fun together by doing something so different in the industry, and I think it is a cool way for people to get exposed to some incredible artists and then get interested in checking out their original groups! im so glad i found this man a few days ago ✊, he isnt like all the other reaction youtubers, and tbh i stopped watching them because they just scream and shout into their microphone, and give no real opinion 🤷♀️. this guy here, he gives insightful thoughts on the song, talks calmly amd his voice is soothing (and he actually has a background in singing and actually understand how much effort goes into these songs), so nice 👌. im gonna support him and i hope his channel blows up, he deserves it 👍
edit: and he actually pays attention to what hes watching, intently, which, many youtubers dont for some reason, and it irks me so much when they skip over things or dont notice because they arent even watching 😑

It's Act 1 and there will be Act 2 in the future, so for sure another MV with powerful performance (this is what he promised and he always keeps his promises). Taemin King!!💗💗💗I noticed after he pulls off his bindings he continues to keep putting his hands back together again throughout the video as if to say he can't get away from the bindings or toxic relationship he is in...it keeps pulling him back into it. Taemin was scouted at 11 and debuted as the youngest member of SHINEE at 14. He's been at this for 13 years and his growth as an artist has been a joy to watch. On stage he's captivating, mesmerizing, he's sensual and powerful and you can't look away. He dances like you and I breathe and makes it look effortless.
Taemin in real life? He's dorky, a little awkward, very sweet, loses everything, endearing and he will always be the baby no matter how old he gets. :-)
Taemin has been an idol since he was 14. He pretty much grew up in the industry. Its been his life.

You really can’t go wrong with any Taemin song/mv tbh. The boy doesn’t miss. He ain’t called the king of kpop for nothing. As far as songs that are more dark or sexy like this one, Move, Danger, and Want come to mind. But his whole catalogue and even his entire albums are worth listening to, as he explores a lot of different sounds and genres. His Sayonara Hitori mv is amazing and some of his live performances of that song are just simply breath taking for instance.

Taemin is one of the most complete artists in Korea. Vocals, experience, DANCE, musicality, his relaxedness, tambor, performance, fashion, ....he is such an all-rounder. Want is a great one to watch.

It's so great to see people discovering Taemin for the first time through Super M. He's got a lot more of this and different things from his solo work and from his group, SHINee as well, who are iconic. You could look up any of their most famous songs & watch the lives, they perform at an unbelievably high level re: vocals and dancing despite the difficult choreo. The harmonies and ad-libs you're seeing here are very typical for SHINee - they've got very distinctive voices so they always layer their songs intricately & the arcs soar, just as much if not more than what you're hearing here. For what you've noticed of him in Super M, it's only a sliver of a fraction of the things Taemin can do and has done. :)
The confidence from him is absolutely from his experience. It's 12+ years since he's been with SHINee now. I love that you noticed it. & you should check out Lucifer from SHINee (the dance practice and MV) bc the hands being tied up is jokingly referred to as being from that choreo.

Yeah, this is an Act 1, there's gonna be an Act 2 but there's no date yet. Included in the album is Famous (Korean ver.), originally it was in Japanese ver, you can check out the MV of that it's available on YT via Universal Music, but i would suggest you follow it up with the dance practice coz it's really awesome. I think next week, Taemin will show the stage performance of Criminal through Taemin The Stage and will be uploaded via SHINee YT channel.

TramayneTirrell Adding on to the original comment: His first performance of Criminal (along with 2 other songs I think: Black Rose and Nemo. If not here then on the music shows next week) will be THIS Saturday at 8pm KST (aka 4am PST / 7am EST) via a “program” called The Stage. If it follows the same The Stage performance conventions, it will likely be uploaded to the SHINee UA-cam channel (rather than the SMTOWN one). It’s not a live broadcast but more a performance program directed by Shindong, a member of Super Junior (another boy group from SM). He‘ll start performing on live broadcasted music shows starting next week, either Thursday or Friday.
I can't get enough of this song. I've seen so many reactions by now and every time without a fail i get excited when the music starts. Taemin and Shinee are absolutely amazing, their music is just another level.

The adlibs in the last part of the song honestly topped the atmosphere of the song. Each hit of his voice in the upper register had an undertone of desperation and almost masochistic attitude that really cemented the meaning of the song. Everything about this song was just so well made, from the creation of the scenic sound with the way he projects his vocals, it really just portrays the song symbolism so well. Glad to have watched your reaction!
Thanks for the reaction!! The entire album Criminal is from is really fantastic! Black Rose, Clockwork, etc. are great songs. I sure hope that you react to more Lee Taemin - he is so very talented and charismatic. For those new to him, Taemin is from SuperM but for long time fans, Taemin is SHINee's maknae and that is why he is so great now (SHINee is the best - Married to the Music, Sherlock, View!). If you would like to review more of Taemin's back catalog, I would suggest Danger, Move, Ace, Press Your Number, and Want. The MVs of those suggestions are all good but Taemin is electric live.

Already accumulated ~13 years of experience in the music and performance fields (he's 27 now)
Taemin has a very beautiful vocal tone and his dance moves are usually very graceful and feminine but he can also drop jaws when he gets down to business and brings out his masculinity through his moves
Many kpop idols don't even attempt Taemin's choreographies by the way haha
I believe his most popular songs are "Move" and "Want" but i also enjoy listening to "Flame of Love" and "Press your Number" ( press your number was written by Bruno Mars, correct me if i'm wrong ^^' )
Shinee and Taemin's lives are legendary. Theyre known for their consistency and flawless stage performances.
Taemin's a polished show man by experience and hard work. When he debuted, he didn't have much of a singing voice to the point where fans and industry people alike said he'd never be a singer. Now hes one of the lead vocalists for SuperM and is constantly trying new things with his voice. Just when you think he can't bring anything new to the table, he does. Criminal's actually pretty different vocally than his previous work.

Thank you for reacting to our extremely talented Taemin. He's very special to Kpop and has attained legendary status among the industry, his fans, and idols of all ages and generations. You will never hear anyone in the Kpop world speak ill of Taemin.
Taemin began his career at the age of 14 when he debuted with the, also legendary, 2nd. gen., Kpop group, SHINee, as their main dancer. They are widely known as the "Princes of Kpop" for their killer live vocals, harmonies, dancing, and performances. Then, in 2019, Taemin was the first idol approached by his company, SM Entertainment, to form the new super group, SuperM, as a collaboration with Capitol Records and Marvel.
Now, at 27, and entering the 13th year of his career, Taemin has gained legendary status due to his work ethic, tenacity, and many accomplishments in the field. As a totally self-taught dancer (no formal training like many other idols), he attended an open audition for SM Entertainment at the age of 12 and got in on the first try and made the first cut. This is extremely rare and difficult to do. Then, unable to sing due to immature vocal cords, he debuted at 14 as SHINee's main dancer. Nicknamed "Tone Deaf", Taemin worked extremely hard, practicing night and day on his singing and was helped by Onew & Jonghyun, the main vocalists of SHINee, to learn how to sing. In 2014, at the age of 21, Taemin became SM's first-ever male soloist from an active boy group to be given a solo debut. His onstage charisma, persona and success as a part of SHINee made him an immediate success as a soloist. From that moment on, SM dubbed him their "ACE". Taemin also became the first idol to debut four different times in three different generations of Kpop. Through all this, he also managed to get a degree in music and film.
Since he cut his teeth with SHINee at such a young age, and with SHINee being the major trendsetters in Kpop, especially in the area of introducing new and experimental music, Taemin is not afraid to be daring, experimental, and smash the traditional cultural norms of Korea. He even demolished the standard cultural gender divisions of dancing when he introduced the song, "Move" in his 2017 comeback. The song boldly proved that men and women can both do the same choreographs without the need to segregate. Taemin regularly has both men and women as his backup dancers. The song created quite a stir and even a virus called "The Move Disease" where every commentator, variety show host, and most idols rushed to cover the dance. It's actually still going on three years later. However, no one can quite match Taemin's fluidity and finesse.
You also have to be very careful to not just take Taemin's lyrics at face value. They usually have dual meanings. "Criminal" is typical of this. The concept for this song is Stockholm Syndrome from the victim's perspective - Taemin; however, Taemin is also the perpetrator (the criminal). Basically, as Taemin has stated, he's trying to break away from his old image/persona and create a new one - "Destroy me more" (and make me even better, as though refined by fire). Right now he's leashed by his old persona ("I'm on a leash called you" - meaning himself) The process of changing your persona, the image that has been with you since the beginning, into a whole new identity is painful but necessary to achieve what he wants, which is to become an even better performer and artist.
The statue with him in the sign of the cross is a symbol of resurrection/rebirth - the newly emerging Taemin. As a devout Catholic, many of his MVs often have a lot of meaningful religious imagery and metaphors. Taemin said the beginning scene, when he is down in the dark with the lava floor represents the deepest depths of his present persona. The lighter scene (in the white room w/the speakers) is the mid-progression of his rebirth. The first scene with of him being suffocated while crows flap around him again signifies the slow death of that old ego. Then, the second scene of him suffocating with the bag over his head has butterflies fluttering around him signifying the hint of a newly emerging ego (metamorphosis) Act II of this 3-pt album will be that resurrection/rebirth-due out Nov., 9th. I believe this MV/song is linked to "Famous", also on Act I. The short explanation being "....being "Famous" may be "fabulous" but it's "dangerous" and creates a lot of drama, and Taemin wants "no drama". The requirements of fame (perfection always; flawless in appearance; always on top) are expensive (in personal terms) and can create an over-inflated Ego. The entire album is a masterpiece.
Taemin is a very detail-oriented person, and with every MV/Song/Performance/Concert, he is very involved and his fingerprints are everywhere. However, more so in this comeback than ever before. He personally chose the director for this MV (same one who did "Press Your Number" for him), and he co-directed with him to get his exact vision across. In fact, the key change at the last chorus was Taemin's decision. Taemin also re-wrote lyrics & instrumentals and had input on the set and album design for the MV & entire album. He also teamed up again with Sugawara Koharu & Kasper to help him with choreography. They are all friends and know Taemin's taste and give him the freedom to alter the choreo as he wishes. Koharu has also worked with him on his songs, "Want", "Move", "Sayonara Hitori" and "Flame of Love". His creative influence is now even being felt in SuperM, as he dips his fingers into their choreographies, fashion decisions, and set designs. He just can't keep his hands off anything...for which the other members of SuperM have expressed much gratitude. LOL.
All of Taemin's solo MVs are stunning because of those little details and hidden meanings waiting to be found. I believe you would also like his MVs for his songs, "Want", "Move", "Famous", and "Sayonara Hitori" - which is quite different. Sorry for the length of this comment, but you seemed genuinely interested in the MV, the concept, and Taemin. I hope you will continue to explore his vast discography with SHINee, SuperM, and as a soloist.
There is this long thing about Taemin. It goes along like from Taemin, he turned into Tae-Man, then he is Tae-Maximus! For those who has seen him from the beginning when he was 15 yrs it is amazing to see how he has grown up so much and has been able to deliver such amazing music and performances
Good-bye is my fav song by Taemin. But Taemin always levels up. Right now he is recognized as the best dancer in Korea. King of pop! Just subscribed!
Act 1 is his third full album as a soloist. He's releasing Act 2 later this year we believe. His first full album is Press It and the second is Move.
He's incredible, he just turned 27 and he already has so much experience. He was only 14 when he debuted. He's extremely talented, but he doesn't rely on that, he's very hardworking, he pushes himself, he learns and tries new things. He's a perfectionist. The passion he has for music shows in his work.
I would recommend you to see his growth, starting with the Danger MV, then Drip Drop, Press Your Number, Move, Want and Famous. Since you saw SuperM live maybe you should see one of his live performances. They're astonishing.

his concerts are also insane... tmi (nickname for his T1001101 concert) is available on youtube for now. his performances from budokan (his first solo concert) are also super iconic because of the 360 stage. while taemin obviously shines in mvs, i LOVE watching his live performance videos. my personal favorite concert of his is off-sick, which was his first solo concert in korea. i think a lot of the videos have been taken down from youtube but if you can find performances they’re insane. sorry for the long winded response, welcome to the world of taemin :)

This song is about Stockholm Syndrome. He portrays it so well and I love the swat team trying to rescue him and the emergency calls in the background.

taemin has a very distinct style in the way he dances, just very elegant and smooth and absolutely oozes sexuality but in a way that doesn't feel like he's trying at all. he's very good at making choreography that other people look slightly awkward doing look great (move and want are good examples of this imo). his music and style is so influential in the kpop industry, especially among sm artists, which is why some of the moves may look familiar to you. he's the idols' idol.
and that's not even getting into the legends that are shinee. without shinee kpop as we know it would not exist.

Taemin is just fantastic overall. His songs are all true to his style but different enough to where you don't feel like he's doing the same thing over and over again. His other title tracks like Move, Want, and Press your number are soooooo good. Also, I believe in his recent music video for 2 Kids, he freestyled most of the dancing/choreography, so that just shows how incredible of a performer he really is. My personal favorite album of his is Press It.... literally no skips, every single song is FLAWLESS (my faves are Guess Who, One by One, and Sexuality from that album). Def recommend that album but honestly his entire discography is perfect lol loved your thoughtful reaction to this song!!

I loved this. It takes me back to being a teenager in the early 80s wih the heavy synths and the decadent feel such as was popular in videos by Madoona. Frankie Goes to Hollywood and other acts at the time. His most recent tracks have been very reminiscent of 80s electropop.(No bad thing as I still love it)

Love how in depth your reaction is! Another commenter mentioned this previously but you really paid attention to the actual MV along with the vocals rather than just screeching blindly into the mic and calling it a day. The comments you had regarding some details were really insightful and helped point out things I wouldn’t have noticed on my own.
Also, in terms of SHINee song suggestions, I haven’t seen these get recommended yet so: Good Evening, I Want You, Our Page, and Countless. Something to note: These 4 songs are the final title tracks released (I listed them chronologically) before their hiatus starting 2018 due to 3 out of the 4 members enlisting for mandatory military service (required for all Korean men). You’ll also notice that they are the first title tracks released that do not feature Jonghyun, the member who tragically passed away in late 2017. There’s definitely a noticeable shift in mood and general... aesthetics I guess, compared to pre 2017 releases.
Out of the 4 Songs I listed, I highly, highly recommend listening to at least Good Evening due to the unique chords, vocalizations, and general performance style that, in my opinion, are quite uncommon in Kpop releases. Just in terms of vocals, it is absolutely beautiful. It has a melancholic and somber tone yet also kind of.... hopeful? It was really emotional for me when I first watched and listened to the MV because it was so strange seeing only 4 SHINee members and only hearing 4 voices. Also in terms of the choreography for Good Evening, their choreographer (Koharu Sugawara who’s worked with Taemin on his solos, most notably Move) mentioned she intentionally made it so that the members primarily danced facing each other, as if they were performing for each other rather than for a 3rd party like an audience. Compared to some of SHINee’s more complex and “harder” choreos, the Good Evening choreo is looser and a lot of the moves emulate actions like floating, sinking gently through water, shaking away “bad thoughts” to try concentrating or to let out frustration, dancing randomly in the rain, etc. I think calling the choreo carefree and cathartic is a good description? But yeah sorry for the wall of text haha. Looking forward to listening to your thoughts and insights on other Taemin, SHINee, and SuperM releases for the future!!
Omg I love your reaction and how you analysed the MV. I appreciate that yu actually did some research beforehand and I'm glad you enjoy his solo. It's ACT 1 of his album Never Gonna Dance Again and ACT2 is going to be released later this year! You should definitely check out his other songs like Drip Drop and WANT. Danger was his first release though and solidified his "MJ of kpop" nickname lol.

Taemin said in an interview (Ravi Close Up) he wanted to make a movie. His song 2 Kids is the prologue. Criminal is Act 1. I think there will be 3 Acts in total.
