Caleb. "The boys have a meaning behind everything they do." Caleb is right. The name of this song is "Dionysus." He was the Greek God of wine, merriment, theatre, fertility, festivity, ritual madness, insanity, and religious ecstasy. So, that it what you are witnessing to the 10th degree. And your favorite, Sienna, is the ever creative choreographer. To date this was their hardest choreography. It was a long song production. And very strenuous. They were jumping up and down off the sets. Doing precise hand and body choreography while sitting down with no mistakes. This intense workout was at the end of an already long show. And it wasn't your regular choreography. It took months to create this concept, design it, write the adapted BTS music, learn the choreography, rehearsals, and camera tech rehearsals, and finalize all the details for this mesmerizing long performance just for an award show. And I didn't see any mistakes!! To top it off, BTS won every award. Two final notes are below.
No animals were harmed for this performance. Because. The horse sequence was advanced taped with no audience and no sound.
BTS performed the song live onstage on other occasions. One time on the very last scene where the guys go into their final pose. They step up and sit down. The stage hand for Jimin forgot to put his chair up on that table!! So Jimin had to pose and pretend he was sitting. Until last minute, someone saw the mistake and scooted a chair under his seated pose. Jimin never blinked or showed like anything was wrong. That's a professional show business! Bravo, Jimin. It is on video if you want to find it and watch it.

MMA: The Melon Music Awards is a major music awards show. The thing is, whenever BTS perform at any award show, they basically turn it into a BTS concert and everybody a fan so this is what happens lmao

MMA is the most anticipated ceremony for all of k-pop, the boys have been performing there for many years (and they are always placed at the end of the whole ceremony because they always have the biggest performances). That year they did the unthinkable, the first group in history to take all the major awards (record of the year, song of the year, album of the year, artist of the year).
Their concept in solo performances is that they represent the 7 Greek gods from mythology: Appalo, Athena, Artemis, Hephaestus, Poseidon, Zeus, Dionysus. At the beginning, a horn appears, heralding the appearance of the gods with its sound (the horn of plenty is the messenger of justice). The songs in their solo performances were remixes of their title songs from previous years. The whole show took 3 months, 270 employees, 30 additional makeup artists, 170 dancers, 218 costumes. The result was a large-scale performance with the song Dionysus (The song itself is one giant metaphor. BTS do not make wine, they make music. They share it and get drunk on art.).

You guys gotta see all their performances through the years at the MMA 2014 to 2022 and MAMA awards. Jimin won 3 cultural awards for his "FAN DANCE" At the MMA 2018. BTS jumped out the gate being legends FRFR and you will see that if you watch from 2014-22.
In their concerts you can't even notice when they're passing each other mics during dance breaks and when they are passing water bottles to eo during the performances.... that's the level of their professionalism if you won't notice you can never tell that they're doing these things in the middle of their performances without doing any mistakes
Only BTS can turn an award show into a BTS concert. All their MMA´s and MAMA shows are amazing.
It is an award show, MMA stands for Melon Music Awards so this is not a concert despite the loud cheers you guys can hear for the boys.
Edit: Also, the handsign that they do at the end of the performance is a seven, and is a part of their greeting as well

I really laugh out loud when I see media or government mentioning 'THE NEXT BTS'..Cuz there will never be any next BTS and it's a fact..Imagine being the main event of an award show, sweeping away all the grand prizes, having the whole audience as your fans, giving a performance that will be remembered for years..They are legends for a reason and no one can even touch that..The members are all awesome in their solos without any doubt..But BTS as a group is a whole another dimension where each member shines brightly..
Unfortunately the last live group performance on award shows we got was on 2019..After that Covid, hiatus- a lot has happened..But let's just wait for 2025 cuz we know that it's gonna be beyond anyone's imagination..

MMA 2018, BTS PERFORMANCE- they won a cultural award for this one 😌
In the second half of the performances each member was playing the part of a God arriving to the party. The lights at the top formed the constellation Corona Borealis, which is the crown Dionysus gifted to his wife. Basically this whole performances was a gift to the audience.
we don't joke when we say "THEY ARE THE KINGS" and "BTS PAVED THE WAY"
That's the most stressful and craziest dance performance from them and it's not even the hardest they've got. I've seen it like 3 Years ago and my mouth is still wide open when it pops up in my time-line. 💜
The whole Dionysus portion was an introduction to the seven Greek Gods and Dionysus is the God of Wine and festivites, JHope wrote Dionysus. THe symbolism with the light dropping from the sky - represents the stars of the seven Gods. V= God of the sun Appollo, Jin = Goddess of Justice, Jimin= Goddess of the moon, Artemis, Suga= God of Fire, Haphaestus , jk= God of the Sea, Poseidon, JHope= God of all Gods, Zeus and RM= God of wine and festivities, Dionysus, and kicks off the song. Can you imagine an award show, where every Kpop band was present, and BTS closed the show! No one since then has topped thier performance! I think because BTS musice is like no ither Kpop band with their deep meaning, poetic lyrics and crazy choreography! The award shows of any other country cannot top this 100%. That's why BTS donated all the money from their online concerts during covid to concert/stadium workers because all of them lost their jobs during that time. and they're one of the very few artists that you can actually tell have their mics on and are CLEARLY singing, almost all the other groups the backing tracks are too loud or they are just straight up lip syncing

BTS MMA 2019 is the best performance ever. An award show but like a concert. A fact that BTS is still the best so far 💜✨
Taehyung (V) use to do that deep growl/ gritty voice a lot when they first started. He is basically in charge of reaching the lowest tones. If you want to hear more, you guys have to listen to "Jump." It's even become apart of a BTS inside joke. It died down a little, but you will still hear the members sing Tae's low part of "Jump" because he introduces himself (his stage name V) in the song, and everytime anyone use to say "V" they would all start singing (trying to sing in his low tone) his part. Jungkook and Jhope still do from time to time, but I think Jungkook has made it a personal mission to keep it alive.

It's not a concert, it's awards, MMA is the Melon Music Awards, but BTS makes it look like a concert for sure.

A theory
1. Namjoon = Dionysus.
I think this is fairly obvious. He holds Thyrsus (Dionysus' staff) when they perform Dionysus and also has it in the VCR. Also, since Joon is the leader of BTS it makes sense for him to represent the God that the song Dionysus is named after.
2. Hoseok = Zeus
In Hoseok's MMA performance, lasers are heavily featured, which gives off an appearance like lightning. Zeus just so happens to be the God of the sky, as well as lightning and thunder. In the GDA VCR, he's eating a bunch of grapes, which is very representative of royalty. This makes sense because Zeus is King of the Gods.
3. Jin = Aphrodite
At the MMAs, Jin comes in on what looks to be the Trojan Horse. The Trojan War actually has links to Aphrodite, because it has origins in an argument between Aphrodite and other goddesses about who was the most beautiful of them. Also, he's draped in pearls in the GDA VCR which points to Aphrodite because the pearl is one of her symbols. Plus, the VCR also shows him by the ocean, which is where Aphrodite was born.
4. Yoongi = Hades
In Yoongi's MMA performance, he performed Fire while surrounded by flames. He's also surrounded by flames in the GDA VCR. Hades is King of the Underworld, which us often associated with fire and flames. Also in the VCR, Yoongi is casually drinking wine while surrounded by the fire, looking very regal - much like Hades as the KING of the Underworld. The wine could represent blood, as Hades is God of the dead and is very much associated with dark imagery, or it could even represent pomegranate juice as pomegranates are a symbol of Hades.
EDIT: People in this thread have pointed out that the Underworld is more often associated with darkness/no light and coldness, which implies no flames or fire. My bad for making that association! This makes me think that my second guess down below of Yoongi as Hephaestus could be true! So here:
Yoongi = Hephaestus
Yoongi performs with fire in MMA and is surrounded by fire in the GDA VCR, and Hephaestus is the God of fire. Also, in the GDA VCR he appears to be drinking wine. This could link to the myth of Hephaestus' revenge on Hera, who rejected him for being lame. Basically, he made a throne and chained her to it. So the gods convinced Dionysus to intoxicate Hephaestus with wine so they could take him to unchain Hera. Also, Hephaestus is the God of forging/sculpture, which makes sense as Yoongi as often the architect of BTS songs through lyricism, composing, producing, etc. I actually like this theory more than the Hades one - don't know why I didn't think of the Hera, Hephaestus, Dionysus myth earlier! :)
5. Jimin = Artemis
In his MMA performance, Jimin wore all-white, a colour associated with purity. Artemis is also associated with purity as she made a pledge of virginity. Also at MMA, I'm pretty sure Jimin and Tae shared a pair of earrings at some points, which makes sense because I think Tae is Apollo, who is Artemis' twin. In the GDA VCR, Jimin has the snake on his head, which is one of Artemis' sacred animals.
6. Taehyung = Apollo
His MMA performance had dancers in the air, similar to Cirque de Soleil aka Circus of the Sun. Apollo is God of the sun. Again, I think Tae had matching earrings with Jimin at the MMA, because Apollo is Artemis' twin. In the GDA VCR, Tae has a sun crown.
7. Jungkook = Poseidon
In his MMA peformance he dances in water, and Poseidon is God of the sea. In the GDA VCR, he has a golden crown of leaves, and Poseidon is often depicted with golden clothing.
I remember watching this show in the early hours of the morning , waiting for this BTS performance back in 2019, and when it was over,I said to myself WTF DID I JUST WATCH? It was awesome. I will never forget it.
Jimin is just so magnificent in this scarf dance. His dance lines are so elegant. MMA is Iconic, you should not miss 2018 , all the way back to 2016. The MAMA award shows are also too good to miss.

there was actually a flaw in it when bts go behind the table to sit on the chairs 41:18 one dancer was late to put chair under jimin to sit but jimin's presence of mind saved him bc he was squating before he could feel the chair under him so flaws could happen with bts as well but them being the most professional artist you could never guess what the flaw is AND THATS WHAT YOU CALLED BEING THEE BTS

We were also shocked as they were having a 40min time slot which no one of the kpop ever had such long screen time in an award show.
Other groups dropped out bc BTS was winning so many awards before this....badicalky a boycott..That's why BTS got all the time for this moni concert.

❣️This was from the annual Melon Music Awards, a Korean award show the equivalent to the Billboard Awards. BTS swept the awards, thus closed the award show, though many other artists did indeed perform beforehand. The cost of the production for BTS entertainment company BigHit, was over 500K dollars, and all the in-house production team of BigHit started planning it over half a yr beforehand! Also most of the rehearsal time that BTS had, was while they were touring worldwide. But they all were quite into doing this, and somehow managed to fit in the rehearsal like they did the yr before.
The only one who performed live only, without benefit of VCR being shown, for the broadcasted version, was Jimin, who shows here being the phenomenal, outstanding, ever so breathtakingly amazing professional dancer he is, which he was even before joining BTS. His performance was beyond mesmerizing, so poised & elegant of a dancer. With the exception of Jimin, all the other solo performances were prerecorded live, with smaller audience the day before, since there was no way to have these stage sets and tank pool of water let alone have JK who was performing the dance in water get dried and change clothes beforehand!
Although, all the members performed a live version of their solo dance, for the live audience, while the VCR was playing the prerecorded version that the broadcast, & or online audience saw. Also certain songs like Mikrokosmos were performed live beforehand, as well, so they could also allow for the special effects that only people who saw the broadcast on TV in South Korea or had it stream worldwide could see that version. Also the part with the live horses was filmed beforehand without an audience. 👍🙏❤️🔥🔥😍🤩🌟✨
Like we said BTS always turns an award show like a concert . This is one of the most legendary performances of them. For the Dionysus performance BTS represents as greek gods . BTS Live performances are unmatched. I recommend you to react to bts MMA 2019 DIONYSUS DANCE PRACTICE.
Am damn sure about it that they are the only artist whose stage live performances are more lit than recorded in studio.

The 2019 MMA performances were all amazing. I watched them with my mouth agape. I'm watching them again now, and I'm having the same reaction. BTS is truly a different kind of group; I really love them. J-Hope is so good at dancing that he uses his body really well. V I really like his very sexy deep voice 😂 I always saw Jin in the back, and he danced wonderfully.I fell in love again when I rewatched it🔥 He had really improved, and his face is so handsome, he looks like a baby. Rm and Suga's rap is a masterpiece, ahhh wowww.Jimin and Jungkook were like princes. Whenever I watch them, my admiration shines through 😍 They all gave more than their best in this performance, and I am so proud of them.

Dionysus is the Greek God of harvest, wine, grapes and parties, he is also considered the God of theater, madness and sacred inspiration, the staff that Namjoon (RM) picks up during the performance is the thyrsus that Dionysus loads, in one part of the song they sing Ongheya which is a cry used in traditional Korean songs, check the translation of the song please it is very good

You can check out their live performances in those award shows starting year 2014 or 2015. They performed every year till 2022 (GDA) .

How can I forget that they won so many awards that night, that they spent more time on stage than sitting, I still feel that their knees hurt from standing up for an award every 5 minutes! 😌
This performance is legendary!!! Also just to clarify because you asked if it is live, yes most of it is live but some parts are prerecorded, such as rm's intro, mikrocosmos and most of their solos (except for jimin). But that is just to change their clothes, have a quick break and just for practical reasons (for example the horses are prerecorded, and jungkook's water solo). But although we see the prerecorded version (just some parts), they still perform on stage live at the same time. So its mostly for visual and practical reasons.
To this day this is the most amazing, legendary performance, all props to bts foŕ such amazing execution💜💜💜
RM"s intro was actually live, they just showed the first part of the pre-recorded version but he was in stage doing the same thing but with his suit instead

I never get tired of watching this performance. It’s so intricate and the attention to detail in the storytelling is top notch. Each individual intro reflects something about the particular member’s personality/character but they also represent a different Greek god. Aside from Dionysus (RM) the easiest to identify are Hephaestus (fire), Zeus (lightning) and Poseidon (ocean/water). The gods are then sitting up in Olympus watching the mortals down on Earth. The jaguars, horses, harps, nymphs, the tyrsus (RM’s staff) and the Corona Borealis (the constellation formed by the seven descending lights) are all symbols connected to Dionysus, the god of wine. (Also associated with revelry, theater, pleasure/ecstasy and madness/frenzy). The song compares their music creation process to being drunk on art.
