As a Tracey survivor, it was cat 4 due to the Met Bureau weather station being damaged in the first wall of the storm. Based on the damage it was cat 5. It was at the time the smallest-sized cyclone recorded.
On the population not returning most of the population was on 2 to 3-year contracts with the commonwealth government as Darwin was and still is a government administration town city for the region. You did your time in Darwin to get a promotion in the civil service.
Those who returned were true locals which is a much smaller population group. My family is local and my mother refused to be evacuated and kept us kids with her. She basically ran a welfare station and food kitchen from underneath the floorboards ( on the ground concrete garage floor as we have elevated houses due to heat) for the next three years.
Why the slow start to rebuilding by DRC? They were undertaking scientific research to improve building safety. The building code before Tracey was from 1939. After Tracey, the DRC developed and tested a new improved building code which has only been adopted in the Top End of the NT. It is not enforced in QLD or WA where they are just as at risk to Cyclones.

I'm terribly sorry that she affected you in such a way. I cannot begin to imagine the feeling of it, and even though it was 50 years past, I know that it still resonates with people such as yourself today...
I thank you for your liking of my video.
I also pass forward your words: To all those who were lost. R.I.P.

Cyclones rotate clockwise mate, your drawing is wrong.

Thank you for your feedback. Whilst it does depend which hemisphere you are in as to the rotations of a cyclone, yes in the southern hemisphere the rotation is clockwise. I apologise for this simple mistake, the drawing was simply to give visual reference as to position and path of Cyclones Selma and Tracy. However, I should have paid more attention to the orientation of my drawing. I hope that the rest of the video was not mired by this small mistake...
