Finally found a reactor that actually understands and appreciates what he’s hearing, not just fake overhyped reactions/automatically likes everything. I noticed you weren’t blown away by Gaucho and even though it’s my favorite song of theirs, I also didn’t care for it at first. Keep it up man, we all can benefit from the intelligence this channel brings
In fact, one of the boys spoke of the influence of disco on this album. But no one who wasn't alive at the time can ever imagine the massive, overwhelming, all-engulfing force of disco on music and social life then... It was like a super-tsunami of loose shit...
I have no technical knowledge of music, music theory, reading music, composing music or understanding how songs or symphonies are crafted. My knowledge is limited to what my ears tell me. According to my ears, Steely Dan’s body of work consists of one masterpiece after another. It sounds very complicated and I can only assume that genius musical minds are involved. In other words, “Damn!! These guys are great!!” Thanks for inviting us along on this journey.
Ok. But aside from the complexity, which is there to reward repeated listens, you'll also agree there are the HOOKS, vocal and/or instrumental, that will have you whistling, humming, singing along for the rest of your life. That combo is unbeatable and I don't know many artists who've nailed it as solidly as SD.
Pockets is right! SD got more pockets than a billiard table! Tasty transitions and melodies. You’re in for a treat on the next song Gaucho. Can’t wait. Love your channel!
“Layers of perfection” is a good description as to how most of Steely Dan’s songs sound. In addition, that “WTF....how can a band be this consistently good” look at around 05:39 , is how we all have felt at one time or another upon indulging in this band’s vast repertoire . Let’s just say that song was STEELYGOOD!!! 😎🤘🏼
I am 70 years old and can't remember having heard Glamour Profession before. Your explanations and descriptions are spot on! I now have a new favorite song. Such complexity!
This song was my all time favorite song growing up (Class of 81, when this album came out)... I understood (without knowing the words or theory) the absolute strength of this song (and this whole album) is the power of RESTRAINT. at 9:45 of this video, you hear the master choice.. where most bands would have upped the ante and wailed with a powerful solo.. SD just went along as if they were on a long drive... the restraint creates more power. Awesome choice!
The horn arrangements are stunning, the chord structure is amazing, the interplay between the acoustic and electric pianos is something to behold. It sounds more modern than anything today, and even kind of space age!👍🏼🎸❤️😎
One of? ha! Steely Dan (Fagen&Becker) are the finest rock/fusion band that came out of the 70's-80's. Others being of course Weather Report, Miles Davis's groups, etc; but none blended the lyrics and music to the sophisticated level that SD achieved.
Another SD song about taking and dealing drugs but they do it so well, don’t they? Your comment about the vibe of this album is spot on. Different than Aja but just as good and, in many people’s opinions, better. Who’s to say? Everyone has a favorite. Like the line about Miguel being in from Bogata. For what I wonder😁? Excellent analysis of the song. How about Steve Kahn’s guitar work. A thing of beauty and you mentioned the bass line. They’re just awesome. Sorry if I’m gushing.0
Possibly my favourite Dan song. Well, along with Here at the Western World. The melodies are heavenly, the groove drives the narrative without any seeming effort, the lyrics paint a Nobel-worthy story that just puts pictures in your head. Brut and charisma.
The Dan is just one of those once in a generation studio bands that completely rewrites what popular music can be. Truly special contributions to music.
So much to love about Glamour Profession. Without a doubt, one of my top 5 SD tunes. The ace session guitarist Steve Khan is the son of the legendary lyricist/composer Sammy Cahn (Samuel Cohen). For me, the horns are inspired by Duke Ellington. The story, vibe and sketchy characters capture the "glamourous" LA cocaine lifestyle of the late 70's/80's. On the heels of Aja, many music critics characterized Gaucho as cold, over-polished, bleak, sterile and soul-less. When I listen, I hear a masterpiece.
Incredible song: the groove, the harmonies, the piano and guitar solos, that bridge, those girls....and of course, the one and only Anthony Jackson on bass.
Rob Mounsey's incredible piano solo... and Steve Khan's lead guitar simply stellar. This might be my favorite song on the album. Arguably is its most forward looking track - w/ a groove predating late 1980s, early 1990s Dance.
When I was a kid growing up in the 60's there was a musician named Chet Atkins aka Mr Guitar. His sound was unmistakable. You knew immediately when he was playing. The guitar tone you regularly hear in SD songs makes me think of Chet. I wonder if he was of any influence to them ?
I love Steely Dan melodies and harmonies. Love that sprinkle of a guitar solo. Fagen and Becker never settled for less than the best. They let their players jam.
Oh my DramaSyde, yes - more Steely Dan. As Forrest Gump might say "Steely Dan is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you will get" but you will always find excellence. Thanks for being so good to my ears.
This song just came on my radar recently. Never have I heard so many notes and chords that weren't supposed to work together beautifully gel into this infectious groove. Damn!!
Like your channel and your intelligent read on what you're hearing. I have been a Dan Fan since the 70's. Hearing Goucho for the first time was like discovering a color no one knew existed. As a musician I can tell you that there is a lot of advanced stuff going on in Glamour. The pocket that you were (and were right to be) digging late in the chorus "...under the sun" is a transition from a 'normal' chord (flat 7 add 13) at "illegal fun...under the" , to a more ethereal type of chord- a suspended or "sus" chord at "...sun". Don's vocals and general melody across this genius chord change create a very shimmering dream-like effect. You generally do not hear sus chords on your local top 40 radio station. But when you put a group of writers and musicians together like Fagan, Gadd(drums) T. Scott(horns) Brecker(t. sax) Khan(guitar) and Jackson(bass) miracles happen. I think that years from now Don Fagan will be held in high regard like fellow musicians Davis, Brubeck, Ellington, etc.
I AM 63 AND BACK IN THE DAY I LITERALLY PLAYED THIS ALBUM SO MUCH WHEN I FIRST GOT IT I WORE THE GROOVES OUT..HAD TO BUY A NEW COPY..GREAT REACTION SIR!!
From an interview I heard Donald Fagen say this song is about a cocaine dealer who loves hanging out with the rich and famous in Society. I Love the music in this song. Gaucho is probably my favorite of all Steely Dans albums.
Another great track. This album is very groove oriented to me. You already did Hey Nineteen and that's another song that hits a groove and stays there. No big time signature changes. The songs are still complex in the way they are layered and put together.
To say i am a fanatic DanHead would be the understatement of the year. I looked up the word 'perfection' in the Oxford English,it simply said: Steely Dan.
Here is a link to the reconstructed "lost Steely Dan song," "Second Arrangement": ua-cam.com/video/CJiPbZEFTNE/v-deo.html Here is a link to an overlooked early song, "Dallas," on EP, later covered by the band Poco, not even the box set: ua-cam.com/video/Euf716oQx-w/v-deo.html
Yes Indeed Bro, anytime i am Feeling Down in this screwed up world today, i play any Steely Dan, and I forget about it all, thanks for the video, Cousin Figel
one of my personal GOAT albums...and this track was key...bought it new both on vinyl and cassette. Had an MGB (auto) back then and would drive at night top down the distance of thee entiirty of side one, flip the tape and drive back to side 2. Same with Aja...
I was watching your reaction just enjoying the music period And when I watched you start the dance in your seat, that is the moment I realized you " have gone deep into the Dan... Welcome to the party pal and welcome to the family"". It is the musical equivalent of eating a slice of your favorite dessert that's the best way I could ever explain it. I hope that makes sense
For the longest time I have liked certain songs for reasons I could not explain. You nailed it when you said, there are "Pockets" within a song that grab you!!
This one is unique. I remember where I was when I heard it the first time. I didn't like it at first. Now I know every nuance and usually listen with a special instrument in mind. After hundreds of listens, it's still amazing.
I can hear the influence of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band. They had a big Disco hit in about 1977, "Native New Yorker." Great song. I read someone's comments who lived in L.A. in the early '80's. He said this song is EXACTLY what it was like at that time.
A rare live show from Steely Dan performing "Black Cow." And it is Excellent!!!! I thought you might want to see this Live since you like live shows.....It also means that this group maybe doing Live shows in the future.
Man, you “get it” better than any other reviewer no doubt! Almost every other reviewer gets so sidetracked looking and analyzing lyrics they totally miss all the incredible musicality going on here!
Been on the sd journey from day 1 and love this channel.getting up at ridiculous times of the morning to see if next track is on!😂.this track starts to remind me of Donald's solo album the NIGHTFLY.?.hope you sample it.keep it up .brilliant journey 👍👍👍
I am really enjoying your journey into the SD catalog, they are my 3rd favorite band (behind The Beatles and The Cars.) Some of their best are actually the deep cuts, like Here at the Western World on the Gold album.
Once you finish with Gaucho and you've had a well earned break, you may get withdrawal symptoms ! At that point I would urge you to do a track by track of Donald Fagan's 'The Nightfly' album, where the excellence continues in abundance. Far more so than the Steely Dan albums Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go (even though both have good moments). Just my opinion, but I'm pretty sure you will love it.
The album that this song came off of 'Gaucho' could easily been a double album. Fagen&Becker shelved some of their finest songs for some reason and did not include them. If you check on UA-cam here for 'Gaucho Demo's and Out Takes' you'll find some wonderful tunes that could easily of been hits for other lesser groups, but for SD they were throw aways

"Please to meet you, hope you guess my name"......etc. etc. by Mick Jagger himself. Tell me I'm wrong. It's only an opinion. You'll have yours. Drugs are the sorcery, the vehicle to take you down, down down.
It's hard to choose a favorite from Steely Dan, but Glamour Profession is one of them.
I don’t think I can ever express just how much I love this album.
SUPERB!!!!!
It’s beautiful. I hope you have discovered the Nightfly by Donald Fagen as well. It has similar moods and sounds ☺️
same
Agreed with every comment here. Gaucho is a perfect album. And this song is my favorite on it. Indescribably wonderful.
@@Sander12348 Great recommendation. In some respects, _The Nightfly_ can be considered the follow up to _Gaucho_

It's an awesome piece of work, isn't it? Perpetual-motion chord-changes with a noir-disco groove. And the snarky lyrics always make me smile.
"Noir-disco". Excellent.
You got it, son
In fact, one of the boys spoke of the influence of disco on this album. But no one who wasn't alive at the time can ever imagine the massive, overwhelming, all-engulfing force of disco on music and social life then... It was like a super-tsunami of loose shit...
And once again, Steely Dan has me running off to iTunes shouting "Take my money!!!"
No brainer. Money well spent.
This song is arguably one of the most expansively written songs ever. Have a look at the chord sheet, it’s pretty absurd
yeah - I just watched a you tube clip where the chords were put up all the way through - stunning
I believe Gaucho is a step ahead comparing to Aja. Please don't hate me, but this album is just unreachable.
I have no technical knowledge of music, music theory, reading music, composing music or understanding how songs or symphonies are crafted. My knowledge is limited to what my ears tell me. That reminds me of my Dad's reaction to Aja (that's a lot of bass) and Gaucho (sounds like they've practiced) albums. lol
@@jml-rj5re Well, your dads right. There's some bass in there, and, no doubt all these cats have been practicing...for years, and years, and years...

How can something that complicated glide along so smoothly.
Musically as well as lyrically this is one of SD's best
So patient to bring in Steve Khan’s lead guitar but when it gets there, that tone is so good!
Without a doubt, some of the best guitar work in their entire catalog
That guitar outro has Walter written all over it. The fact that he wasn't playing it is genius.

best fade out in all of rock and roll. Funking and dangerous...
The Bass, The Bass, The Bass, Love that Bass....You will love the “pockets” in the Nightfly

@@RebelBuddha1971 Thanks Shawn - "Kurland" is the root of my name as well. The Courland region of Latvia. My ancestors are from Riga.

Gaucho is probably my favorite of all
Steely Dans albums.
Right. He said it's ultimately a song about power.
“Jungle Jim” is a allusion to Jim Loscutoff a famous NBA player. He sells coke to a player who crashes the backboards like Jungle Jim. So ingenious.
"we're a star" he's a star just because he sells cocaine to a real famous person
This is one of my top 3 Steely Dan songs...so damn good.
This music, Steely Dan, will be with us for eons.
Time Out of Mind is a good song from Gaucho
I love how you nailed it when you said how they "expound upon" what they just did and take us to a place we don't expect, but somehow is perfect.
The only Steely Dan disco track. Appropriately about a cocaine dealer.
Steely went disco! I always thought that instantly whenever I heard this one.
You nailed it on Steely Dan...their music touches your soul!!! I cannot drive my car without listening to Steely Dan...they are incredible!!!
