- Sinead McCann reviews the fully electric Volkswagen e-Golf for CarsIreland.ie.
It's not cheap and competitors are passing it out on range, so why is that the e-Golf is still so appealing?
We tried it out for a week with the help of a new Elvi EVBox home charger kindly supplied by the folks at www.charged.ie who offer a wide range of charging solutions for the Irish market. You can check out the rest of the range here: www.charged.ie...

Hi Sinead:
I'm a recent (4 months) owner of a 2019 VW eGolf driving in a location with moderate weather (British Columbia, Canada). My experience to date is better than imagined. I'm averaging about a 230 km per charge over the past 5,000kms with regenerative braking set to 'B' (at all times). I enjoyed your perspective throughout the review. The "research" part was hilarious. Well done!
Cheers,
Paul
Fantastic video once more. The combination of the car, music and that accent completes it all. Just a shout out to whoever does the sound editing on these videos. You're amazing! And Sinead, you're even more so. To be honest I look forward to these videos every week more than the grand tour. Peace to everyone
I'm not in the market for a new car, but just wanted to hear your lovely voice and accent review the current car I have. The e-golf has been great. I drive about 25kms to work and have a charger in my garage. If I need to go farther than the battery range, there are apps that can provide locations of free level 2 or 3 chargers. As you mentioned it's the only EV that doesn't scream to the world that it is one, just a regular solid golf running on electrons.
One of my favourite e-Golf features is the Depeche Mode startup sound :D
Great review!! :)
Almost 10k subs, yaaaaaaay (should be 100x that)
Nice video! That torque!! Agree that it’s so easy to live with, being a Golf. And most people won’t even realize what it is. Especially with the Exec wheels :)
Great informative review. Highly desirable car. Love the idea of preheated car on winter mornings.
Gooood review. Greetings from Dominican Republic. Curious thing, only Euro electric cars not import at date (new or used) here, Chinese, japanese and from USA (about 3-5 Tesla now running in the country) now you can buy or import for "good" price. Come on VW!, in Caribbean like electric and hybrids too.
Would like to consider an electric car but I live in a terraced house so home charging isn't an option. Lack of EV charging points in the UK plus the actual length time it takes to charge up means I'm on a gas guzzler for the foreseeable future. Really enjoy your reviews - thanks.
I quite like the wheels 😀 if these aerodynamic type wheels are lighter as well as more aerodynamic then all the better. A saving in rotational mass is a very good idea. Interesting how VW has added an extra-regen gear, similar to the engine braking B gear on my Toyota hybrid 😄 I think you'll like the Kona's regen better
Might make more sense to wait for the id coming out next year.
I can't believe she placed that bag from the wet muddy ground in the brand new trunk !
Yes , the Irish weather could really spoil a day in more ways than one .
I drive a golf, my previous car was a golf, my previous car to my previous car was a golf but I will not be buying an electric golf until the price matches it's equivalent petrol or diesel golf. VW are crazy if they think any golf owner is going to pay 10 thousand euro more for something that needs to be charged up as often as a mobile phone. It all comes down to money.
Mobile phone charges way quicker.I like it.But practicality and price is a let down.
Now lets all not forget about what's replacing this e-Golf (and Golfs in general)
VW Neo should be released later this year. €23,000 base, rwd, 350km range.
Another funny looking electric car
Looking forward to DS7 video
Stunning.
Useful & very practical video. Would love this car but worry whether any current EV will be completely outmoded in a few years as the technology is rapidly advancing.
Great vídeo. Greetings From Spain
Does the pretty lady come with the e-golf? I like watching your videos, sometimes I forget what car is being shown. Thanks.
Hi Sinead...you should definitely make Dingle without recharging on e golf😁😁
Brilliant review again..many thanks
I cringed when she took the bag from the mud and put it in the trunk
Great review, if only I could focus on the car...
From what I've seen on some videos, the upcoming ID Neo will still have some EV styling quirks. It won't be as bad as a first-gen LEAF but it still won't look as normal as a standard Golf which is a shame imo
Well it would be dumb to design a ev with the constraints of having an ice up front
The range just isn't good enough. This feels like a stop gap that they had to rush to market due to their dieselgate naughtiness, until their I.D. range is fully production ready.
They're called compliance cars. Ford foxus, the Kia soul etc.
I will order the new ID neo or crozz
3:00 😂 I agree with that comment
The Irish 🇮🇪♥️
Is it all wheel drive?
Just FWD. But keep your eye open later this year and 2020 for the VW Neo (the Golf replacement). They say it'll be €23000, and it will come with rear wheel real engine drive and 350km range.
Excellent review....not digging some of the trolly anti-EV comments on here though, lots of misinformation. Obviously the low-range of this vehicle makes it an incredibly stupid buy brand new vs a Tesla model 3, especially since they can be had for darn near the same price, but there are some rather good bang for your buck deals to be had on the used market. But the drive quality is so much better on this golf than a horse-and-buggy golf (ice).
I will be really interested in it if it was a hybrid, as it gives me a choice. As we all are aware, with demand & supply - when the majority of people are using electricity (or anything really), what do companies do? Increase their prices.
You can get the golf gte which is a plug in hybrid, best of both worlds
Is there no frunk on the e-Golf?
Nope.
What if some divvy unplugs it overnight!
t s I’m not sure about the e-Golf, but a lot of EVs lock the charge port, so that the cable can’t be removed without first unlocking the car.
They can’t, the cable locks
Good. But now -> Skoda Scala, review please :-)
Nice .But there are no charge points in fuel stations.I wonder why mm oh yes i know why .Takes to long to charge at charge points.Have to have a house with your own driveway or garage .
Bring the house with you , silly !!
I live in the apartment the nearest charger is 2km away.
perfect choice for me.
On a full tank I do 900km, refueling takes 5 minutes.
Most people are looking for comfort not a hassle.
No matter how much money I had, I would never ever buy this car! Great review as always Sinead!
How many takes did you need to do the 36000 euro voiceover? 😂
😆 smooth save, no?
I wish you were my wife 😍
Totally outclassed with the Hyundai kona and Kia niro. To little to late. You would be nuts to buy that obsolete heap
This is the future. Not Tesla.
You are gorgeous the beautiful lass reviewing the car, can i know your name please? Also great review 👍
Dude...seek help!
Glad you mentioned they are useless in cold snowy weather, especially if you get stuck in a traffic jam.
I love you ❤😍😂🤣🔫
I want a Tesla but there so bloody expensive everyone will be driving electric cars in 10 years tho so hopefully it will bring costs down
I Will Never drive an ev
Electric cars are more of a hassle than a solution. You worry more about range instead of enjoying your ride, you worry about hills and traffic and if you can make it to your destination, you worry about wind speed though not an airline pilot , you worry about how long you can manage without some heat just to save some juice, you worry about being stuck if there are no electric charging stations near you. With a gas car? you just start and go...when it is cold, you crank up that heat and put some warm coffee next to you...traffic? you call in to work to say you will be a little late... long trips? you simply plan your voyage and carry a camera with you.
No, No, Sonny - YOU Worry more about these things. The rest of us just get on and drive the things, and WE (not you) would NEVER go back to a dinosaur car.
first?
why Golf and Polo are so boring considering design..
the car looks like 90s in a way
Is it only me or is the music like a cheesy p... movie?
Ms Sinead McCann will you marry me
You don't buy a car, "just so you can commute to work"...
Saludos desde tasqueña #cdmx México. E golf 👎
