- A simple sandwich I first encountered on the deepsea dragger Marwood in the early 1990’s - the creation of the Newfie skipper. Although it may sound disgusting, this weird combination is actually quite tasty (and not just when you’re a starving fishing boat crew member).
INGREDIENTS
4 slices white bread
8 oz (230g) bologna, thickly sliced
1/2 cup Cheez Whiz (recipe below)
1 tbsp olive oil
DIRECTIONS
1. Toast the bread.
2. In a large frying pan, heat the oil on medium and fry the bologna for 3-4 minutes per side, until nicely browned.
3. Spread Cheez Whiz on all four slices of bread.
4. Divide bologna amongst two slices of bread and assemble sandwiches.
FAUX CHEEZ WHIZ (Makes 3/4-1 cup)
1/3 cup milk
2 oz (55g) cream cheese, room temp
4 oz (110g) red cheddar, grated
1/4 tsp salt
1. In small saucepan, heat milk and melt cream cheese over low heat. Whisk until fully melted.
2. Take off heat and add cheddar and salt. Mix until cheddar melted and combined with other ingredients.

Love a recipe with a good introductory story!
This was a story I was glad to survive.
That cheese whiz is really a good idea much more Healthier than the store-bought one
Also to keep the baloney from curling up you can make little cuts on the edges Before putting him in the Pan usually four is fine but it'll keep the bloney flat
What a great idea thanks for sharing
Definitely healthier. Yeah, as soon as the bologna started cooking I was kicking myself for forgetting to make cuts.
I've been loving fried thick-cut bologna samiches since a kid. Pair it with some tomato soup! I just use the old 'merican sliced cheese product and we griddle them like a grilled cheese. Simple eats, and tasty treats.
Oh, yeah! I haven't had a creamy bowl of tomato soup for a long time.
Homemade cheese whiz-so clever & likely healthier. Great idea!💞
Yeah, I imagine it's a bit better for you than the stuff in the jar.
Fishboat Fried Bologna & Cheez Whiz Sandwiches?🤔 Now you're really testing my vocabulary range Lord Kevin! 😂 If this doesn't fill the hole in my belly, I don't know what will. Looks scrumptious! Cheers 🍻
LOL. Gotta keep building that vocab, Sir Newton.
Always good! fried bologna is always great. it activates the fats . i like the homemade cheese wiz ! thanks for the share! stay awesome!
I love activated fats!
Here in Victoria BC (Esquimalt) your skipper would be proud.
Good ole Esquimalt. Is the Olde England Inn still operating? We stayed there once in the late 70s. Lived in the apartment building overlooking the shipyard shortly after that.
@@KumasKitchen The English Inn is still there but closed to being under restorations. Esquimlat has been growing a bunch in the last few years.
I like to fry Leberkäse. Looks pretty similar
Close. Leberkäse that I've eaten is softer, but would be about the same in this sandwich.
I'm sure working on a fishing boat, the last thing you wanted to eat was seafood. 😂 A quick and easy meal. 👍 That's one tough job, being at the mercy of the sea. 🚢
Actually, we had a large salmon appear as by-catch one day, and that was quite a tasty treat. However, the hake we were fishing for were not appetizing.
RIP Murray Larson 🙏
He was a good fellow. Unfortunately, left behind a wonderful wife and 4-5 children.
Cool recipe. ✌️
Thank you 😋
Interesting sandwich Kevin. Not bad. I was thinking, the fact that the canned version of Cheez Whiz is not available in Japan may contribute to their long life spans, who knows. This would sell well at the Konbini.
That could be true. We definitely eat less processed foods.
Cut that crust off the bread..... Sheesh! It is bad enough that you have to eat a quarter of a loaf of bread with each sandwich (I love thin sliced bread, 6 slices or more per pack.) I would add slices of dill pickles inside the sandwich too!
What about smearing the outside of the bread with butter after building the sandwich and then putting them in the fry pan and squishing them down like a grilled cheese sandwich?
LOL. I'm not that fancy. This was a 6-slice pack, and I prefer 8-pack.
@@KumasKitchen Ooops I meant to say 8 slice... I did see a 10 slice once at the local Oasis store but it is not a regular offering.
Do you know where the thick slices came from? Maybe England?
Fried bologna on Japanese bread? Just about anything on Japanese bread is delicious. 😂
This be true. A good Japanese hotel bread is something tasty.
