    Small f/# -> small DoF
    Large f/# -> large DoF
    ...this is so simple. And it’s not a groundbreaking statement. But the fact that you said it this way when so many others haven’t, makes you the winner of UA-cam photography tutorials.

    I could cry, I tried twice to do a photography class online and just couldn't finish it. So much theory and written for people who already understand so much of the terminology, even though it was for beginners! Aperture tripped me up, I got it eventually motivated out of spite lol. The explanations you give are so easy to understand I can't thank you enough for making me want to pick up my camera again. Bless you for putting this course up you absolute legend!!

    I cannot thank you enough for the one simple thing you explained in this video... that small F-stop numbers mean small DOF and large F-stop numbers mean large DOF. I had given up on trying to understand everything about apertures and this often meant giving up on a photography course. This has helped me get excited about learning again. THANK YOU!

    Oh my goodness! Where have you been hiding for the past 10 years?! I gave up on taking decent photographs, resorting to my 'point and shoot'. Today, for the first time since 2016, I pulled out my Canon 40D, charged up the batteries and thought I would give it another go... just to run into the same mind-boggling f-stop/aperture crap that made me quit in the first place. It was a godsend that I decided to look on YT and found your channel... It was a godsend. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am so excited to go out in the snow and to take pictures of the birds at the birdfeeder.

    It's incredible how simple you make this. I'm fairly new to an actual camera and have struggled with the inverse relationships. It's a huge relief to have someone explain it in a way that actually makes sense. Do you know how many videos I have watched!?!?! Plus taking beginning photography at City College. You should get an award. I have passed this on to a friend who teaches at a CA state university. She immediately showed it to her class who said they understood aperture but their settings showed differently. I am now a Chris Bray Devotee! Thank you!!!

    A teacher is not just someone who knows, but knows how to teach what they know. The reason why our education systems suck is because teachers are not taught how to teach. Good job Chris👍!

      Erm I think you will find a large number of teachers do learn how to teach. For example, I did a 1 year-long full-time teaching qualification (PGCE), and I'd already done an MA in Photographic Studies before that.

    Thank you for making aperture so much EASIER to understand! I've watched other lessons from other sources but yours boils everything down and puts it in terms and illustrations that make sense! I am getting ready to go practice what I have learned from your video today! Thanks again!

      Sweet! Im glad to hear it Sharon! Please do tell your friends about these videos, and maybe even grab a copy of the course booklet (or ibook, or clip-cards from my website chrisbrayphotography.com - there's heaps of other free tutorials on various specific topics there too) to help me keep these videos free if you can! =) Thanks again and have fun practicing!

    OMG...I just found my man crush! Dude, this was awesome and made sense instantly! I was on the verge of thinking as smart as I am, I'm just stupid when it comes to using manual mode. I finally had a great day of shooting outside...Thank you so much!🤩

    I have loved all of the videos. I am so shocked that you don't have more subscribers or more likes. I can't believe all this information you have given us, was free. Thank you so so much for everything!! Side note: the disappearing fence/screen/waterspots blew my mind!!! I wonder if this would work when taking pics out of dirty airplane windows. I feel like I finally "get" my camera.
    Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart.

    OMG, finally. Thank you for the explanation. My brain had been going back and forth with all these open lenses, and close lenses, and big numbers and small numbers. Explaining it to my 16-year-old son was driving me crazy. Now, he can just watch this video.
