91 can be tough to get out of. If you are using a Pi-star it helps if you add the Brandmeister Manager option to your hotspot. It adds a drop QSO button to your dashboard to stop a long winded station from making you wait to squeeze in a group call 4000 to get out.

Manual dial plus promiscuous mode (digital monitor) gives you the ability to hear and transmit in unlimited talk groups from 1 radio channel. No more outrageous codeplugs! I hope you get to my other videos about adding Brandmeister Manager to your hotspot so you can add and remove static talkgroups to your hotspot. Using the "capture the talkgroup" feature to immediately key up in a received static talkgroup. Thank you for your viewership and your comments!
Just completed this process and used it. Wow what a big help. Thank you so much for posting this video. 73. Hope to catch you on the air. Happy New Year. 73 Ron.
i just overheard you talking about this on Illinois link this evening. I don't have the anytone 878 but this feature you show how to use has me wanting one. Thanks for sharing. KB9LNS
Thanks for watching and your comment! Also look at my video on Anytone 878 Promiscuous Mode settings, and a whole host of other topics. I explore static talkgroups and how to use them with your hotspots to find QSO's on Brandmeister.
@@MI7DJT with digital monitor (promiscuous mode) and manual dial, you technically only one channel for each hotspot and each DMR repeater. This truly eliminates the need the one talkgroup per channel limitation that is used for hundreds of unnecessary memory channels!
@@k9wlwradio309 Agreed 100%. Even though my codeplug contains all of BM, TGIF, DMR+, SystemX and most of the English YSF I use this all the time now. It's quick and reliable. I like the channels there in case my memory fails me though ;)
Thank you for watching and your comment! You have probably figured out I absolutely hate codeplugs. 1 hotspot + 1 Anytone + Promiscuous Mode ( Digital Monitor) + manual dial = both receive and transmit to unlimited talkgroups on the fly from just 1 memory channel!
@@W5AKC it works on hotspots AND DMR repeaters! All you have to do is set the radio to Digital Monitor mode, and then you ONLY need 1 memory channel per hotspot and repeater. If you tune to the repeater you can manually dial an TG you want. If you hear random traffic, the digital monitor feature will decode ANY talkgroup and you can quickly hit the * key and the PTT to quick key in the last heard group!
After watching the video, and looking at the screen is appears that some of the settings are contradictory to what was indicated in the previous video. To set promiscuous mode in the previous video you set the Monitor Slot Hold to ON, yet in this video is shows you had it set to off. Also the Digital Monitor in this shows off where in the previous video you indicated it should be set to Double Slot. If the settings shown in this video are programmed, won't this turn promiscuous mode off. 73s to you and thanks for the video. WE9PP😀
The version of software I used in the video, was "virgin software". I used this version of the software to demonstrate how to accomplish how to change the 4 settings to unlock the manual dial hold time to infinite. If I used my most up-to-date settings version of the software, the 4 settings were already changed. Notice in this virgin software setting there are only 2 memory channels. Does that make sense? So you are correct in your premise.
I don't really get it. If it's the "manual dial hold time" that decides how long the dialed in TG will override the original TG, then what does the non manual dial "group/person call" setting do?
Hello, thanks for the reply the other day. I set this up and it works like a charm, thanks a lot! I have another question, does or will this work the same way say if I have another separate zone set up for the TGIF network or any other network for that matter?
Absolutely yes! The radio just transmits the manually dialed talkgroup. So technically, you don't have to change channels or zones to just key up random talkgroups. As long as you dial the desired talkgroup number, it will transmit it. It even works on DMR2YSF and DMR2NXDN. If you use DMR Gateway on Pi-Star and have todial a 2 digit prefix for other DMR networks, it STILL works. 1 channel in 1 zone=endless possibilities!
@@k9wlwradio309 thanks a lot, you are very helpful especially since I am a brand new ham (got my Technician license about 2 weeks ago). If I may, can I ask another question. I have a Skybridge hotspot and have been using Brandmiester with no problem. I am trying to set everything up to connect to the TGIF network and the pi-star config page says the talk group needs a "5"prefix. I did that but still can't get it to work. Some other info i found said that maybe the TG ID needs to be also 7 digits long. Do you know anything about this? Thanks for your time!
Don't forget to activate the digital monitor mode also known as Promiscuous mode. See my Promiscuous Mode video if you haven't turned this feature on. With Promiscuous mode and manual dial, unlimited talkgroups on transmit and receive on every channel!
@@k9wlwradio309 hello, I do have a question. If I set all this up and for example am on channel 50 on my radio which was set up for TG91 and then I manually change to TG305 on channel 50, will channel 50 now be permanently assigned to TG305 or if I turn off the radio and turn it back on channel 50 will revert back to TG91? Thanks!
@@greadore excellent question! When you set up the "manual dial" feature I describe in the video, it will "remember" the new manually dialed talkgroup until you do one of 2 things. 1. Leave the memory channel and come back (with the vfo knob). Or 2. Turn radio off and back on. After getting comfortable with all of this it will suddenly dawn on you that technically you only need one channel per hotspot and one channel per DMR repeater, because you can just hear and receive whatever talkgroup you want, whenever you want. Kind of blows up the need for massive codeplugs! The direct answer to your question is the manual dial is a "temporary memory". If you do either of the above 2 things, the radio will remember it's code plug information. That is a more permanent thing.
@@k9wlwradio309 ok. Yes, I don’t need to input any more channels and talk groups. This will solve a big problem in that most of the TGs I have input aren’t usually active when I’m on. I was bummed thinking I had to then find out which TGs are most active when I am listening and then have to input those with the software before I could access them. Now I can see which ones are currently active on the hose line and go directly to those. Cool!
Enjoyed the video but still trying to figure out how I can make a contact on my 878 with the digital repeater in my area, tis a bit more complicated than I expected! 73
You have to set up a channel with the correct frequency offset, and color code. If you set the radio into digital monitor mode also known as Promiscuous mode, you ahead hear any traffic coming out of the repeater on either time slot. If you like I would be happy to walk you through the process over the phone. I am free evenings. Feel free to email me at cq2meters@yahoo.com if you would like to share contact information.
Is the talkgroup activated dynamically? Or did it get activated as a static talkgroup? If dynamic, you must key up a group call 4000 and listen for the "not linked" announcement. If it is activated as a static talkgroup, you must delete it from your static talkgroup list on your hotspot.
Hi again from Chris M6VCJ. I followed your instructions with my own Anytone 878 & am now hopping into different talkgroups at will! Great stuff. Thankyou 73 Chris
Between this feature, digital monitor (promiscuous mode), the capture the talkgroup feature, and how easily it is to manually add talkgroups, I don't have to worry about complicated code plugging! Glad you are enjoying the freedom of QSY at will!
THANK YOU!!! I've been fighting the code plug software, and every time I think that I have everything right, something ELSE pops up to ruin my day. Now, I can finally change talkgroups to [whatever] (!) One question: having done this, are there any "Gotcha's" to leaving it this way? Is some alligator going to bite me in the arse?
Just a couple things to know. When you manual dial and hit PTT for a quick key, it should instantly dynamically activate the new talkgroup. Each and every subsequent transmission should continue keying the manually dialed talk group for additional QSO until you do one of a few things. 1. If you keyup a new manually dialed talkgroup it will forget the old and remember the new one. If you leave the memory channel and come back, it will forget the manually dialed talkgroup and revert to the programmed talkgroup for that channel in the codeplug. If you turn the radio off and back on. It will also forget the manually dialed talkgroup and again revert back to the programmed talkgroup for that channel. I know of no reason NOT to manually dial from talkgroup to talkgroup. It makes DMR navigation a snap and it even works on DMR repeaters.
@@k9wlwradio309 Right! It's been working perfectly. No hickups that I've found. Sure beats writing codeplugs and then troubleshooting them. And if someone hits you with a new TG, you can go right to it without programming. Love it!
@@JimFlanneryDRONES I am glad you agree! It does seem almost too good to be true. You might be wondering why the radios are not set up like this in the first place. That's because DMR was not designed for amateur radio use. They were designed for business use. The purpose of filtering out the unwanted talkgroups was so you could determine which talkgroups would be heard by which radio. You wouldn't want the cafeteria crew to hear a call for the engineering department or vice versa on the frequency. This need required each department radio to be programmed differently. Unfortunately, that feature really doesn't work well in well in amateur radio applications because we want to hear everything on the frequency. That's where Digital Monitor comes into play. Manual dial is just our way to key up any talkgroup we want. I am sure if Icom, Yausu, and Kenwood made DMR for hams only, they would package the radios with digital monitor and manual dial as the default feature. Anyway, I am glad you, you have enhanced your radio. I do hope you have much enjoyment ahead. 73 de K9WLW.
@@k9wlwradio309 That makes sense. I used to be the manager of a 9-1-1 Centre. We weren't able to let ALL the cops know about certain operations. A lot of stuff was "Need To Know."
Hi - great video that’s helped me a lot. The only thing I find confusing is the terminology- QSY is to change frequency, but different talk groups are all on the same frequency so perhaps a different terminology could be used? I understand why it’s used in this context but I still find its use confusing here. Otherwise, brilliant and thanks again. Rog.
Thank you, Roger. I am glad the video helped. Technically, you are correct on the definition of QSY. Since you are generally not changing frequency by changing talkgroups, perhaps a new Q code should be created! Lol, times have changed in Amateur Radio! I guess in my mind, people change radio memory channels to change talkgroups, and hence, the silly need of programming overly redundant memory channels for each talkgroup all with the same frequency. Despite my erroneous terminology, I hope you got my central theme here. No more complex code plugs and only one channel is needed for each hotspot and each DMR repeater. If I do any future videos on the 878 or DMR operation, I will refrain from using the QSY as a Q code. Thank you for your comment!
Where does this video show capturing last call part? The other video said to press the star key. You linked a video that was supposed to explain that, it led me here. Still no explanation.
Thank you K9WLW. This is a brilliant find. However on my 878 v.1.19 this configuration causes the DIG indication to never go from light blue to dark blue after receiving or transmitting to the channel. This is particularly annoying when scanning since the scan will not progress when a signal on a digital repeater is received even for a moment. I played with the setting and the number of seconds match the amount of time the DIG indication remains light blue. This is probably a bug. Did you notice anything similar on your radio?
Thanks for watching. I can't say I have tried scanning. Although I am on many DMR talkgroups. I only use 2 channels for each of my hotspots. I have 2 more channels for 2 local DMR repeaters. And 1 channel for an analog repeater. So with 5 channels, there is not much need to scan. I am not a huge fan of the Anytone on FM analog. I think Kenwood, Icom, and Yaesu make far better analog radios than this radio. I do love the DMR features of this radio. That is where zi think the radio really shines.
Great videos, I have learned so much from your videos. By any chance do you know how I turn on the announcements? I am not sure if it is an anyone, Pi-Star, Brandmeister, or Open Spot3 issue. Thank you
The only announcements in DMR are when you key up a group call 4000. Brandmeister will announce "not linked". What sort of hotspot are you using? If you let me know, I can better advise you where to check your talkgroup status.
After you input the talkgroup number, you say "kerchunk". I suppose by that you mean you press the PTT button? If that is the case, for some people it might be helpful to use clear explanation. Thanks for the helpful video!
I believe it does with the 578 software. I can't say for sure though, because I do not have a 578. If you download the software for the 578 into your computer for free from the Bridgecom website, you can see if those same software settings exist with an infinite setting.
Thank you for the tips. For some reason when I connect to a TG my radio does not make any beeps or sounds. Is this a setting in the hotspot or radio? If in the radio do you know where? Thank you
Sorry for the use of old ham slang. Kerchunk is a term meant a quick press and release of the push to talk button. Sometimes when a radio operator is out and about he/she is not sure if they are within radio range of a repeater. To test this, a radio operator would press the push to talk button quickly and release to see if the repeater would respond to there signal. The transmission and ending sqelch tail noise, heard on the repeater would be often followed by someone saying that someone "kerchunked the repeater".
@@looking_glass2022 thanks for watching. DMR is cool in that to change to a different talkgroup you only have to quick key (kerchunk) your repeater or hotspot to with the new talkgroup number and you appear there in an instant!
Hello Francis. I tried the Manual TG 4000 to disconnect when there is traffic. It does'nt work for me when there is traffic. Does this depend on the fact that you are using an OpenSpot 2? I have a MMDVM pi-star. I dont see how it can work since the MMDVM has 1 simplex channel and if there is traffic it cannot hear the 4000 disconnect that I am sending to it. Thanks, Dave W4EIP
There is a way to get out of a busy talkgroup with a simplex pi-star. It involves adding and using the Brandmeister Manager. Here is a video on how to add the Brandmeister Manager to your pi-star hotspot. It will allow you to keyup a 4000 group call during busy radio traffic and it will allow you to also add and remove static talkgroups to your hotspot. ua-cam.com/video/jCyhaDXEnnA/v-deo.html
If you just click one channel clockwise (or counterclockwise) and click right back, the channel returns to its prior setting. OR if you power the radio off and back on, it will revert to its prior setting.
Hi Mike! Thanks for responding. I will try and do that video for you tomorrow. I can tell you the OS2 works quite well on DMR. I particularly like it when mobile. Have you successfully gotten your talker alias feature working so you get callsigns on your Anytone? It's a great feature.
K9WLW Radio Hi Frank, I do have the talker alias and GPS working on the 878. I like that I don’t need to download the whole database. Pretty good radio. Still prefer my D74 with dstar. It just works so effortlessly.
Hello, your video was very informative relating to manually keying a group. These videos are very helpful to completely new DMR users. I did have one question. I can manually input a group and it works. When I try to use my zones/groups it always keys up the group I manually input. This is after I send a 4000 response and it says im disconnected. How do I go back to using my zone/groups channels after a manual enter.
The manual dial feature allows infinite reseting in the manually dialed group. If you power the radio off and on the radio will "forget" the manually dialed group. If you change the channel selector and come back to the channel you you were using to manual dial. The radio will also "forget" the manually dialed talkgroup and key up in the programmed talkgroup for the channel. I just click the channel knob up or down one channel and the right back. And then hit a quick push to talk and the manually dialed talk group is forgotten by both the radio and the hotspot.
Will this work with any brand of hotspot or even a repeater? It should right? I have the same radio. I like you, don't like to write code plugs. I did watch the previous video.
It will work on any hotspot and any Brandmeister repeater that allows you into any Talkgroup. Many DMR repeaters operate on something called a C Bridge. Those repeaters allow users access to ONLY limited talkgroups allowed by the repeater operator. As far as Any hotpot goes, you can go to ANY talkgroup. In fact, you can make up a talkgroup with your 7 digit DMR ID. If you want to have a semi private QSO arrange a time with another ham to key up someone's 7 digit DMR ID. It works! Other hams can join in, but it will NOT tie up any network repeaters! In fact, you can see the stations still show up on the Brandmeister last heard.
@@1crazynordlander What you are talking about sounds like the private call feature. I would be happy to do a video about how it works. I need another ham operator on the other end of the demonstration. Would you like to be the other ham on such a video? I know the software says infinite, and it will stay there for as long as you don't change anything, But how do you get back to the way the channel was originally programmed? A channel change? Or do you have to power cycle the radio? Or does it permanently alter that channel?
Those are great questions! Simply switching to another channel and back, or powering radio off and on, restore the channel. I just click off channel and back since it is quickest!
Quick question. Great video but after I listen to someone talk on my anytone and there is a pause, my radio reverts back to the programmed talk group id and nothing is heard. Is there a way to keeping the manually programmed talk group saved for a duration of time?
In the video, I go into the radio software and show you how to fix that. After you adjust the 4 setting to the software, transfer the settings to the radio and the problem you describe will no longer be a problem.

@@johnbesedic9432 I am glad you got it. The "Promiscuous Mode" also known as Digital Monitor is the video I shot preceeding this one. These settings are why I refuse to codeplug. I only need one channel per hotspot and one channel per repeater now. With both the manual dial and digital monitor, another cool feature opens up in the radio sort of as a by product. If you tune to a repeater or hotspot and are not sure of which talkgroup your are going to hear, the radio will play the audio and indicate the talkgroup, color code and time slot. Since you can hear any and all talkgroups now, all you have to do is quick press the * key during or after the last received signal. The radio will automatically "capture the talkgroup, color code, and time slot of the received signal and after hitting the * key, your push to talk will key right into the heard talkgroup, color code, and timeslot automatically. I call that feature "capture the talkgroup"!

It sounds like either the setting to extend the "decay time" of your manual dial feature did not save into your radio was not successfully transferred or saved into your radio. Do you have firmware version 1.16 or later in both your radio and software on your computer? If it is version is 1.15 or earlier, I do not think the feature as I describe in the video will work for subsequent keydowns after the first manual dial.

Hello, I talked to you Friday night about the promiscuous mode and told you I'd check this video out. So I have and the radio my friend has that I am programming for him, doesn't have the 2nd 2 options in the 1.35 software. This radio is a D868UVE. Would this by why it doesn't have those 2 options?? That little beep is annoying. LOL
It sounds like this feature may not be fully available on the 868 from what you described. That would be indeed a pity. This modification was so worth discovering. I stopped by the Bridgecom Systems at Orlando Hamcation, and the gentlemen I spoke with was unaware of this feature in the software. Maybe it is strictly an 878 feature and doesn't apply to the 868. I merely stumbled into this feature online, and it jumped out at me as a very valuable feature. It was so valuable, it actually compelled me to download the software once and for all, to access the modification.

I had a hard time loading it and locating it without help. I struggle with windows. Fortunately I got help saving it to my desktop. So far, this is the only time I have had to use the software. I program all my talkgroups and channels by hand. The software was version 1.16 from Bridgecom.
My bad! It is an old school analog FM term. It basically means a quick push to talk and release. In the olden days, you would quick key your radio to see if you could hit the analog repeater. After you unkeyed, you would hear the repeater have a "squelch tail". We would call that "kerchunking" to see if you were in range of the repeater or not. With DMR a quick push to talk (kerchunk) immediately transitions you to a new talk group if it is different from the talkgroup your hotspot is tuned to. For example you could be monitoring talkgroup 3100 and wish to quickly jump into talkgroup 91. You can manually dial up talkgroup 91 in the radio, hit a quick push to talk and release, and you ate immediately now monitoring talkgroup 91 and simultaneously left talk group 3100.
@@k9wlwradio309 Thanks. Having just gotten into DMR, I am not impressed by lengthy and complex code plugs. I would like to be able to operate my 878 without a long list of Talk Groups or contacts. Is it possible to do DMR entirely in promiscuous mode, with most zones consisting of analog repeaters. It seems that if I know the number of the talk group, I should be able to key that in whenever I am interested in communicating or just listening to others. @@1polonium210 it is possible and the ONLY way I operate! I only use one channel per hotspot and 1 channel per repeater! Even if the repeater is DMR. From that 1 channel, you can either load a talkgroup from the talkgroup list, or manually dial ANY random Talkgroup.
@@k9wlwradio309 Many thanks. I have programmed several Zones into my 878, each populated by analog repeaters channels) based on their locations along major highways and associated state highways and roads in Texas. So I have no problem using the 878 for analog communication anywhere in the state. It is the DMR component that I am trying to work out. Going "promiscuous" sounds like an ideal solution to my beef with the byzantine code plug matter that detracts from what I think should be a relatively straightforward application of DMR. Does that sound reasonable?
@@1polonium210 you are definitely connecting the dots! Remember DMR was not created for Amateur Radio. It was a business band creation. The non promiscuous mode was used to filter out the radio traffic to other departments (talkgroups) at jobsites. For Amateur use, we want to be able hear anything in DMR digital mode. The closest analogy in analog is if you had to set one channel for each possible CTCSS receive tone for a local repeater. It's far simpler to just set the frequency and leave the receiver open in one channel. Promiscuous mode opens the squelch to all talkgroups, all color codes, and both time slots on a receiver.
Can anyone help me set all the hold times to infinite and still nothing works I followed all the steps correctly and when I read from my radio the hold times say infinite but will not stay infinite
Once you change the settings to infinite, you have to WRITE it to the radio, not read the radio. If you read from the radio it will change everything back to the way it was.

Mr MacLeod, you have way, way, way too much value in your own opinion. The idea behind setting up Promiscuous Mode on receive and manual dial setup is to greatly simplify programming the radio, where it can be done by hand and not rely on computers for ridiculously complex codeplugs. One memory channel is all you need with 1 hotspot, instead of dozens. That is the whole Idea behind this video and the Promiscuous video before it. It makes the radio much more ham friendly. In defense of the complexity of the complexity of DMR radios, they were NOT designed for Hams. They were designed for business band usage with a radio programmer controlling where the work staff tunes to. That said, I would welcome, Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu, and Alinco to design Ham friendly, Ham designed DMR radios.

Very helpful video ta!

Wow, this is great info. Gonna test this out.

Why I keep hearing the TG that is selected in main menu despite manually dialing TG group?
Is the talkgroup activated dynamically? Or did it get activated as a static talkgroup? If dynamic, you must key up a group call 4000 and listen for the "not linked" announcement. If it is activated as a static talkgroup, you must delete it from your static talkgroup list on your hotspot.
Hi again from Chris M6VCJ. I followed your instructions with my own Anytone 878 & am now hopping into different talkgroups at will!
Great stuff. Thankyou

Thanks for the info , most helpful.

Will the AT-D578UV do this also?
I believe it does with the 578 software. I can't say for sure though, because I do not have a 578. If you download the software for the 578 into your computer for free from the Bridgecom website, you can see if those same software settings exist with an infinite setting.

There is a way to get out of a busy talkgroup with a simplex pi-star. It involves adding and using the Brandmeister Manager. Here is a video on how to add the Brandmeister Manager to your pi-star hotspot.

I had a hard time loading it and locating it without help. I struggle with windows. Fortunately I got help saving it to my desktop. So far, this is the only time I have had to use the software. I program all my talkgroups and channels by hand. The software was version 1.16 from Bridgecom.
Whats kerchunk? Newbie
I assume that "kerchunk" is PTT? KI5KET
Yes! A quick PTT and unkey!
I see the value of DMR, but I'm still leaning more toward analog VHF/UHF and to HF, especially QRP. KI5KET

Compare your comment to the others and clearly yours sticks out like a sore thumb. Another thought, we are called "amateurs" for a reason. I don't do any of this for financial gain. I have zero adds or endorsements or paying subscribers. Trust me when I say this. Cheap shots at "volunteers" is not a good look. I have always thought first impressions are important.
@@k9wlwradio309 Ignore the constructive criticism if you so desire, its anything but clear, it becomes boring and difficult to follow due to the unnecessary lip flapping. this is not 75 meter band.
@@k9wlwradio309 Don't let the sad hams bother you :) I liked the video....some "experts" just like to start a needless flame war. Thanks for the video it helped
@@Dr.Logistik thank you for your support!
I am dusappointed at the compkexity and assumed knowledge necessary to operate these radios. Most so called tutorial just provide enlessly complicated instructions w no thinking whatsoever for the newcomers. Am so disappointed.
Very useful, thank you! KM6ZPO
Thank you for watching and your comment!
Best hint by far for this amazing radio. Thanks! vy 73 de Klaus, DL4UI
It is my favorite DMR handheld. Plenty of battery and with manual dial and digital monitor it is a DMR workhorse. I codeplug just one channel per hotspot. Thanks for watching and your comments.
