    Well, this is an old video, and I hardly ever comment on UA-cam, but I love this topic, so...
    In my opinion, PKs on our side are almost entirely about what happens before the ball is kicked. The biggest thing that immediately relaxes me before I even step to my line is to remember that ALL the pressure is on the kicker-they’re SUPPOSED to score, so nobody blames us (usually) if they score, we only stand to get congratulations for making a save.
    Somebody else mentioned mind games-big fan. At high level (college, semi-pro, even some really top HS players, and definitely pros!) the players are pretty much capable of putting the ball wherever they want with power from 12 yards. They SHOULDN’T miss or have a pen saved, really, which means that when it happens it usually involves a mental rather than physical error. With players I think won’t be particularly confident, I’ll do everything I can to delay: roll or toss the ball to them, not step onto my line until I absolutely have to, clap my gloves, point, move around (but not after they’ve actually started their run-up, stay planted!), and even throw the odd sarcastic comment in there.
    I think it’s also important, though, to recognize that with certain players the best mind game is to simply not play any. Let them psych themselves out, because really confident PK takers aren’t going to let you in their head.
    Also, there was a very interesting article that came out some time ago talking about how the way you hold your arms greatly affects how much space the kicker perceived you taking up in the goal. If you hold them up and out it looks like you take up a lot of space, prompting them to shoot further away from you, and potentially missing, but also making it less likely you save it. If you stay low and keep the arms pointing down, they tend to shoot closer the the center of the goal, meaning it’s easier for you to save, but much less likely they miss. I change this up depending on the taker.
    I’m also not a fan of the idea of “guessing.” There’s always SOME guesswork involved in saving PKs, of course. But I like to wait until the moment juuuuust before or even as the taker actually kicks the ball to commit. There've been numerous studies that show a shot with pace that’s anywhere near a corner is just not saveable from 12 yards for a keeper who waits until the shot is being taken, given human reflexes. But honestly, if those go in, fine. A good pen is a good pen, and even if a fully commit the right way, there’s still a good chance it goes in. I’m looking for the bad penalties, the ones that are closer to the center of goal than they should be, or don’t have much pace, or are at a very saveable height. I just look for the typical things: which way are the hips facing the moment before shooting, and where is the plant foot. I will say that I typically find better PK takers or people taking low-pressure penalties open their hips up and go for the corner of their kicking leg, while less experienced takers or high-pressure pens tend to be closed off hips going towards the opposite corner. I just think the latter is more comfortable for people.
    I have an excellent record saving them, and I’ve had numerous people tell me I seem to be unlucky for kickers on the other team after numerous misses on their part, which I attribute to the psychological aspect.
    Anyways, this is far too long, and doubtful it’ll get read by many, but I’m super interested in this topic, always have been! Great to see a fellow member of the GK union putting out content like this, especially one at such a high level. Good luck in your professional pursuits!

      Hey Maurice, thanks so much for your take and the info you provided that adds to the conversation. This is absolutely the most in-depth and accurate response I’ve ever received to one of my videos. I’ll definitely go ahead and pin this comment to the top of the video so other goalkeepers can learn from your take.
      Very interested in that article you mentioned about “hand positioning” and it’s effect on the penalty kick takers perception of the goal. If you happen to remember what it was called or can link it, would be much appreciated. Reason being, I’ve held a similar theory throughout my career and it’s seemed to serve me well in matches. Would be great to back up my technique with a solid empirically based article.
      Thanks so much for the comment and for the kind words, look forward to hearing from you in the future and please feel free to shout out some ideas for future videos you’d like to see or think might be helpful to our fellow goalkeepers. All the best my friend!

      @@AmericanProfessional1 Weird, I swear I replied to this comment yesterday...huh, maybe I won't directly paste the link this time. Anyways, hey there APG, thanks for the reply!
      The article I initially saw that study referenced in is from the Guardian, titled "How goalkeepers can use an illusion to save penalty kicks." It also references a few other studies conducted around keeping, so lots of good info there. Definitely recommend reading the whole article (and study, if you've got time!), but the basic summary is that by either raising or lowering your arms as a keeper, you simulate one or the other shape presented in a common optical illusion.
      As for other videos, I think you're doing great, and I also know how busy you probably are! The one thing I rarely, if ever, see content creators for keepers cover which I think would be especially useful for younger players is communicating with and controlling your back line. We're in an especially good position to see what's happening on the pitch, and are often relied upon to marshal things all around the field of play, but it's not something people seem to talk about much. I also think you're in a great position to address it, since you've played at pretty much every level, and I would imagine have had both situations where you're clearly the most senior player there and situations where all your defenders probably are more senior than you. It's hard to pin down, though, and it isn't very glamorous, so I get why it doesn't get many videos!
      Anyways, thanks again for the reply, and looking forward to more great stuff from you. Stay healthy, and happy new year!

    when it comes to stopping pks, ik gk goluremi uses a "mind games" trick where he eats up as much time as he can, giving the striker more pressure before he takes the pk. seems to be pretty effective since its worked quite well for him.

    • @AmericanProfessional1
      @AmericanProfessional1  3 роки тому +4

      Definitely a tool I utilize in my game as well. Anything you can do to add pressure to the penalty taker can pay off dividends. GkGoluremi knows what he’s doing for sure.

    I’m a young 11 year old club player and now I know how hard it is to take pk shootout I had one in a championship game and it went into nine rounds i saved five of them all i was focusing on was not getting caught in the middle my team shooters didnt do the best at shooting but sadly my team came up short and lost but after my game the tournament director came up to me and said my son is a d1 keeper and after i got mvp for my team LOL

    I have only saved penalties in practice. But I either look at the body movement or the eyes. However I am only able to see which approach works after seeing a pen or two. Some players dont give away much with the eyes and then I cna just look at the body.
    Im not a keeper, but trying to save penalties is very fun!

    • @AmericanProfessional1
      @AmericanProfessional1  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for sharing friend. I’m a big fan of penalties myself and played in the field until I was about 16 yo.
      You seem like you’re one step ahead of where I was back in the day. I used to only look at the players eyes and actually remember a specific tournament finals where we lost in a shoot out because the other team would purposely look in the opposite direction and I ended up missing every single shot. You live and learn, that’s what’s great about making mistakes, sometimes they make you a much better player/person.
      All the best my friend.

    Regarding defending pk, with peripheral vision check how far aside from the ball the planted foot is while staring at the shoulders- and commit

    i usually go by which foot they are striking it with and watch the eyes and i usually wait for the contact to be made so i can have it covered on one side and if it goes the other way i can have a slight chance to recover if its not too far away

    To save a penalty you just need to look at hips, feet, eyes, preferred sides for the striker, full commitment, and a small bit of luck

    If the player is kinda cocky ill point to the corner I want them to shoot 2 and a lot of the time they will try to score there. Or ill tap one of the posts before getting on my line idk if this one works tho. I always look where their eyes go and the movement of their body like if they open themselves up wide. I also ALWAYS say "good luck" to the penalty taker and give em a thumbs up, just to be nice and it kinda throws em off a bit. I save the majority of the penalties against me and is something I have always been able to do (not as great on keeping the shot from rebounding back to the player tho...)

    Do you think the US should add promotion and relegation between MLS and usl and usl league 1 and 2

    • @AmericanProfessional1
      @AmericanProfessional1  3 роки тому +4

      I think adding pro/relegation would help push the US system towards a more merit based model rather than monetary but I also believe that will never happen as the US soccer federation will always be more interested in money rather than what’s “fair” and best for American soccer.

    How do you avoid the hop before and not dive early?

    • @AmericanProfessional1
      @AmericanProfessional1  3 роки тому +1

      I’ve trained myself not to have a big “jump set” or “hop” when the ball is anywhere in the 18 as I don’t have time to react. That goes for penalties as well. I try to get as good of a grip on the ground as I can while the shooter is getting ready and then just try and time the shot. There isn’t really any advice I can give for good timing on pens as it’s very instinctual and you need to face a lot to get the hang of it. I’d suggest hanging out with some guys everyday after training and taking a few just to get a feel for when you should start making your movement. Hope that helps, all the best.
