I totally agree with your assessment. I shoot professionally with a 5D mkiii and 7D MKII and I just bought an SL2 with the two pancakes and the 10-18 for my lightweight kit. For me it has the added bonus of working with my entire kit making it a backup as well. I've tried mirrorless camera but I'm not sold on them and the value of the SL2 is far better
It is the best review on the 200D I've seen so far and I am researching for days. I love your way of explaining and demonstrating. Thank you for the help to choose :)
Honestly, this was one of the best review videos I've seen of any product. Very thorough, knowledgable and authentic. I'm in the market for a new camera and was considering this option. Thanks!

Absolutely wonderful review. I received this camera July 21. I have not looked back on this decision in any way, shape, or form. It was purely a matter of for the money plus already owning some Canon lenses. Every point you made in this review is spot on with my experience using this camera. I look forward to seeing more videos from you. Thank you!!!!!
Thanks for the review. I just got my rebel sl2 delivered yesterday. You are right about this camera being great and just working. I got rave compliments on my first four photos. The video quality seems stunning as well. I just shot my first channel video with it and I'm about to edit. I can't wait to see the finished product. Thanks for sharing such a great feature packed camera at a great price. Love, love, love your channel and your videos are works of art.
Para mi la SL2 es una de las mejores compras que puedas realizar en ese rango de precio. Sobre todo para video... incluso para fotos con un lente de primera.
Terrific review of this awesome little camera. I haven't seen many of your videos as I thought you only covered Nikon gear. You clearly cover all sorts of topics and cameras and your videos are great to watch. Thanks.
Your review is refreshing. I have seen so many camera reviewers that are stuck on getting bigger processors, sensors, focal points, tracking, and so on. Manufacturers make bigger of everything tons of times a year, but it comes down to can a person use the tools they have. Better lenses can make a difference, but use of the camera can be improved on. A person can buy a new camera every few months if stuck on the philosophy of going bigger.
I am a professional commercial photog in Atlanta. I have entire pro systems from Nikon, Pentax and Canon. The camera I reach for THE MOST while working in the studio and in the field is my Canon SL1. I got it for $200 refurbed from Canon. I generally travel with the 24mm and 50mm STM lenses and occasionally use my 100mm 2.8 Macro. No photographer NEEDS more. Of course, one can never have too many cameras.
I also shoot with Nikon gear for sports and wildlife but bought an SL-1 for my girlfriend because she wanted something small, light, and not mirrorless. She loves it. I've used it for travel with the 40mm pancake and it is a great camera. In the end, it is the vision of the photographer that creates a great image, assuming you have the appropriate tool for the task.
I have been a dedicated Nikon user for many years. However, I picked up the Canon SL1 and then later the SL2 for their incredible size. There is nothing better for traveling light. I use the 24mm and the 50mm lenses on it. LOVE IT!!! Great review you've done here!
I like my 70d and 5d2 w a70-200 2.8. A year ago I was recovering from a chronic knee injury. I usually in good enough shape to carry what I need (or want) When my knee was barely functioning, I gained a new appreciation for my Olympus oem5. I still got great images. I cant crop as much; but I worked around it and learned to work with aperture priority which I probably would not have othewise. Sometimes less is more.

I almost forgot, probably the best way to adjust flash compensation is with the flash up, push the pop up flash release button again on the left hand side of the Canon SL2 body .....In the LCD screen a menu will come up for built in flash setting. You can adjust it there with the touch screen. Too easy. lol Hope this helps.

Great video! I have a budget to buy the SL2 body, 18-135mm, 50mm f1.8, and 10-18mm for cinematic video and landscape photography purposes. Is this a great choice to spend my money?
I recently purchased the ef-s 24mm f2.8 stm for my Canon aps-s body. Love it! I think it performs better than the famous ef 50mm f1. 8 stm on crop sensor.
Whats the field of view like? can you shoot environmental portraits without distortion? if you have a Flickr page id love to see your pics you took with it :)
Jungli 999 I don't have a Flickr page, sorry. From few shoots lately, I do notice a mild distortion with shooting portrait with this lens regarding its field of view, especially with close-up.
Hello - - I wanted to say thank you for your videos. They are always informative, sincere and efficient. I really appreciate your straightforward and honest opinions and it seems you really do not have an agenda other than sharing information and quality content. Really great production value, too and you have such a pleasant and kind way. There is so much ego and dreck out there. Yours are helpful, pleasant, refreshing, and efficient. Thank you again and we look forward to watching and learning more out here in the Midwest!
I just ordered this camura, During college vacation I am going to Yellowstone to live and work there for 3 months.. I couldn't decide on one till your video.. thanks :)
No stand out features? It's 1080p 60fps, small, noob friendly, and cheap. This is my first dslr and all of the photography people I have access to shoot with Canons. That's not to start a brand war or fanboy out but as a beginner who's in college (I.e. I can't drop alot of cash on lenses) this helps a ton. Since my friends and family shoot with Canons I have access to lenses and accessories to give a trail run before I make the commitment on buying it
Thank you. I have been a Nikon gal for about 10 years (D90, D7100) and I just bought this for the flip out screen, the video and the weight. Haul around the D7100 with a zoom lens is getting to be a chore. I appreciated your video. I like watching women photographers give reviews because our hands tend to be smaller. As I get "more advanced" in my time on this planet, and having arthrits in my neck now, weight becomes more of an issue. thank you again.
Just bought one myself! 200d rather than SL2 as I'm not in the USA. Still learning to get the most out of it in both stills and videos, but totally loving it! Thanks for the review!
Very good review, I am almost sold but though I found a microphone in the accessories, "compatible with EOS with a jack", I found no mention if the SL2 has the jack. Can I find the answer here? Thanks!!
Nice review. My daughter asked for a camera for her 19th birthday next month. We went to Best Buy and looked at a ton of cameras. I a Nikon shooter, but the SL2 just seemed perfect for her and I actually found the interface more intuitive than the d3400 or 5500. So SL2 it is for her. I may pick one up for the DPAF feature for video.
SnapChick love your reviews. Now at about the 15:38 mark you said you could not find a way to adjust the out put for the pop up flash on the Canon SL2, Goto menu #2 on first menu selection and go down to flash control then select Built in flash setting. there u will see Exp comp. adjust it there. Or in one of the manual modes use the touch screen quick menu and it will appear just under the ISO setting upper right side. Hope that helps.
I would like to ask for your advice. I want to get a new camera so I can get into night photography. I'm having a hard time choosing between the Canon 200D, Sony A5100, Sony A6000, and Canon M50. Which would you recommend?
Thank you SnapChick...your reviews are refreshingly "real world" while talking about just enough of the important specs. As far as comparing sizes of cameras, I'd rather have seen apples to apples...D800 with the 24-70/2.8 compared to the SL2 attached to the equivalent crop sensor lens...and maybe also comparing APS-C mirrorless as well as a micro four thirds camera, as, IMHO, they can/do take very good images in an even smaller form factor. But point taken, a smaller/lighter camera like the SL2 is fun to use and so much easier to carry, while being able to create images almost indistinguishable to full frame in most situations (save for low light / high ISO, and scenes with max dynamic range or where max subject isolation is desired).
A lot of this is new to me and I don’t know what all it means, but it seems like you do. Thanks for the plain and simple info and sharing your experience ❤️🤙🏽
Hi! How long can I record video in Full HD without stop and overheating with SL2 and T7i (American or Canadian version)? More file is not a problem. It is important to make a continue video on a seminar for 4-5 hours. My question come from Europe, because all European DSLR cameras are limited with 30-minute video recording. Thanks for your answer. Parajdi from Austria/Europe
I have just found your channel and want to thank you for making videos! The 1st video of yours that I watched was the Fuji 100xf, because I really like the videos I have seen on this camera. I just watched this video and now I find the SL2 interesting as well, since I would be upgrading from a T4i. I’m looking for a more compact travel camera but I’m still learning. Cost aside, how does the SL2 compare to the 100xf?
Update, This is a popular battery for canon apsc cameras and they are ALWAYS available on prime. There's no need to worry about using off brand, they do not set error codes. (Read the reviews) I'm also adding this body only for its small size, wireless, great focusing, ability to use my other canon lenses. (This is my recommended starter camera because your lenses move up with you) and like snapchick I'm not ALWAYS wanting to risk my $2000+ camera's for walk around shooting.
SnapChick clearly understands the purpose of this camera, which makes this review one of the more useful ones I have seen. I do however doubt that the part about the flash output is ackurate. I hace the predecessor, the SL1/100D, and it has (just like Canon Cameras) the Flash compensation settings, accessible throug the quick setup screen. Also, while it has no dedicated button/joystick for selecting af points, you can use the directional pad, so that you don't have to cycle through all Af points.
Great comment and thank you. For flash - Not compensation. Want Full manual popup flash control, like single fire at 1/64th power to trigger strobes, etc... I should have been more clear in the video. Looking for flash output setting independent of metering.
Great review! I have the SL1 it's even smaller then the new SL2 and it is awesome but I think I will be getting the new SL2 as it has some nice improvements over the SL1 I own now and I think it will be a worthy upgrade.
I have the Canon 24mm lens I bought new and stumbled on a pristine 40mm used for a price I couldn't pass up. When would I want to use the 40mm vs the 24mm? What is the advantage of each?
Even though I upgraded to full frame a couple years back I still occasionally grab my old T3i and EF-S lenses. I have the 24mm EF-S Pancake and EF-S 10-18mm and it's a great setup to toss in the car when I think I might be heading into a situation where I want more than what my smartphone can do.
I love the size and form factor of the SL2 but I’m concerned and torn whether I’m going to get a good video images as a filmmaker. 3 yrs ago they made a feature film with an iPhone 6 (I think) and it looked ok but nothing to write home about. So now I happen to own A Samsung S9 which shoots 4K but I only have one lens on a phone. So because of that I’ve been looking at the SL2 as an entry level film camera........ Your thoughts Snap chick.
NIce review. Interesting camera with a low price. I've been using Sony mirror-less for 7 years so the thought of buying a camera with a physical mirror that flips up for photos, and an optical view finder, are showstoppers for me. As a personal note we have no less than seven cameras in the house, all with video capability. But I just don't find myself using video very often. These are personal preferences. I still enjoyed your review and comments on the SL2.
I shoot a 6D and a MK2. I carry an SL1 for family and on my motorcycle. I lost over $500 in gear off the back of the bike a while ago. Got the SL1 to minimize weight and value of gear that I have to risk if I want to have gear with me and use the bike. It all fits in a small bag I can throw in a side bag and clip to my belt when I get where I’m going.
Thank you for this detailed review. My first DSLR was the canon 30D. Since then I have shot with a Nikon and also more recently a Pentax . I am wondering if you have used Pentax and if you will ever review or comment on this brand. Anyway thank you again Snapchick. I would imagine making these videos, take a great deal of time and effort. I enjoy your style and personality and have gained new knowledge from your experience!
To adjust on camera flash output, put up the flash, go to the settings screen and push the set button and then use the "Flash Exposure Compensation" adjustment that appears right under the ISO read out. It will adjust the flash output by two stops plus and minus.
I don't know anything about the Nikon cameras that you are used to working with, but it seems that the method I described is the way Canon does it. At least my Canon 10D, 50D, 7D, SL2, SX30IS, SX50HS and SX60HS which have on-board flashes work that way. The 5D doesn't have a built-in flash. I guess what you would like is for the flash to work like a speedlite. I could see how this would be handy as this is the way I use my speedlites in the studio. It seems that you will have to stay with Nikon if this is they way you want to work with your on-board flash. I try to stay away from using the on-board flash and don't see the Canon system as a hindrance when I have to use it.
Just got this at B&H (price match of $499 with Beach) and the camera is terrific. I have a 70D ($800 new) and this camera is functionally similar. Little slower fps otherwise gt8.
I went and bought a t6, which is a good camera, but I want to upgrade. I've had starting to ask me about taking pics for them. So far the sl2 looks like a good choice.
Can you do rack focus with the SL2 while recording video via the touch screen? I know this can be done on the T7i and 80D, so I assume the answer is "yes" but would like to know for sure.
Great vid, thank you. Thinking about taking the leap into the dslr world and I think the 200D would be a great all rounder. I'm in England and can get a 200D with a 18-55mm STM lens for £529 which seems like a good price for the UK. I found your vids very helpful.
When shooting video, is AF just for those 9 points or the whole screen? Or if you choose manual can you focus anywhere on the screen or just those 9 points?
12:02 ..and the *earth shattering* technique behind the new AF system is called [correct me if I'm wrong] *dual pixel* . Right? Other than this minor omission - great video.
I can't remember the last time I used noise reduction in editing software. However, if you are in the situation where you find the noise in your image unacceptable, I think software is great!

Great review!! But actually you can configure the flash settings. It's just a little bit tricky...
I recommend looking at used DSLRs on ebay or other auction sites from highly rated sellers. Unless you absolutely need that "new camera" feel, there really isn't any reason getting a used camera would be a bad thing, especially if it saves you money that could be put towards better lenses or gear that makes your life easier.
1) would you recommend purchasing the SL2 with kit lens or just body only with an additional lens with other specs? 2) I like the T7i with 45 focus points but, found that it did not support geotagging via app (where SL2 did). I'm concerned with the SL2 for action shots. What is your experience using the SL2 for action shots?
Hi i got action shots of my RC cars with my older Sl1 and RC is hard to get shots of so the new faster SL2 should be much better. I will be getting a new SL2 also!
Hey dear! I was using nikon d5300 and wana shift to this buddy ie canon d200 but it's limited auto focus points are something which I am worried about, on the same time I love bird photography which might require more auto focus points. Is this one for me or not..
Interesting video . Im probably going to get one because of your very good educational video. Im going traveling so I need a light camera. Your also very good looking and fit and finally great taste in clothes.
Thanks so much for a very comprehensive review. I did test drive the SL1 and although it does generate very good IQ, I found it to be just a little too small for my grip. I wonder if the SL2 may be just a bit larger than its predecessor? By the way, I really like your Carmen Miranda look. :)) Thanks again. Tony
Emreos I own a Nikon D5500 (and other Nikon DSLR bodies : D90, D7200 and D700), I've bought it to restart photography after a very long period without a serious camera. My dad was a Pentax and a Nikon guy as professional journalist, and keep some of their gears, I've started photography with Nikon, so I choose Nikon again to keep using my dad's lenses and my old habits. Nikon D5600 is only just a little upgrade of the D5500. On Canon side, all my generation friends have started on Canon and still enjoy it. So choose between Nikon or Canon, can be see as a generation choice, old generation on Nikon and Pentax (mainly shoot photos, videos are all good in manual focus because contrast focus is out-dated), current generation on Canon and micro 4/3 (shoot photos and marvelous video), next generation on (expensive) Sony E mount full frame and (smart build) Fujifilm APS-C mirroless... Canon SL2 is more modern and polyvalent than Nikon D5600, Canon's dual Auto-Focus system is really fantastic. Due to more modern technology for aperture control, Canon lenses (fully electronically controlled) have more smart adapters for micro 4/3 or Sony E mounts, if you switch to those mounts one day, you can keep all automatisms of your Canon lenses, where all Nikon's lenses only work on manual... So to start from stratch, and if you choose between the big 2 legacy Japanese camera builders (witch is not a bad choice, brand lenses are dammed good on both side, and they are a huge choice on third party brand like Tamron, Sigma, Tokina, Samyang, etc... Sony E mount can be a good choice too, but Sony brand lenses are very expensive - more than Nikon and Canon for the same use - and third party lenses offer is still weak), Canon is a better choice than Nikon. (Advice not for the beginner, but it's important to be aware of it) A small detail, Nikon's flange distance is the highest on APS-C/Full Frame (D)SLR market, so it is not a good idea to think using lenses made for another mount (like old, cheap and still really excellent m42 screw lenses) on Nikon bodies, you will loose infinity focus most of the time (compatible lenses can be found in Medium format world, like Hasselblad or Mamiya, but they are very expensive). With Canon bodies, the flange distance is lower and allow you to mount old lenses from other mounts (like Nikon AI/AF/E series or m42 screw lenses) with manual focus with very cheap adapters. Nikon's flagship bodies are really good but not affordable and not easy for beginners. All Nikon's mainstream bodies (Dxx00) feel out-dated or commercially limited (some functions are only available on higher price bodies with the same processor and sensor...) compared to Canon's line-up. Nikon introduces new functionalities and compatibilities only on brand new bodies, firmware upgrades are mostly only bug corrections (Olympus or Fujifilm give new functionality and features with firmware upgrades for free !). Nikon D5600's video time-lapse built-in functionality is not available on the D5500 who share the same hardware... I own a Nikon 1 J5 (a small mirrorless camera) and a Panasonic Lumix GX8 (micro 4/3) too. If Nikon 1 camera development seems to be completely dead since 2015, micro 4/3 cameras can be a good choice too for beginners. Compact, lightweight, easy to use, affordable, good quality for pictures and videos, a good choice of lenses from Olympus and Panasonic-Leica (third party lenses are limited to some fixed Sigma, a good travel zoom from Tamron, some Samyang and some other exotic Asiatic brand). Lumix G80/G85 is also a good choice on the same price range as D5600 and EOS200D.
jngosselin Thank you very very much for your thorough and clear response!! It is like deciding whether to buy an apple product, or an android product. I believe I have made my decision though. I have watched several reviews of the Canon SL2 and think that that would be the best first DSLR for me.
I’m using canon Rebel SL2 and I’m not able to shoot video (1080 at 60 FPS) it allows me to shoot 1080 at 50 FPS. Please suggest me the method by which I can shoot videos (1080 at 60fps) Waiting for your reply Thanks.

Trevor Sowers what is a pancake?
@@carolguibin The Canon 40mm f/2.8 stm and the 24mm f/2.8 stm. They are almost flat, only about 1inch in length -- both great lenses!

Jungli 999 I don't have a Flickr page, sorry. From few shoots lately, I do notice a mild distortion with shooting portrait with this lens regarding its field of view, especially with close-up.
I have the same lens, I agree much better than the nifty 50.
I love both because that's the only two lenses I have.
I couldn't decide on one till your video.. thanks :)
Commented before. Love your honesty. Please do more vlogs, concise eloquent and honest. thank you for inspiring
Is it also good for photography or it's only suitable for making video. And what about it's low light image quality?
What a lovely review!👌 The Canon SLR2 is definitely top on my list!😇
Which camera was this video recorded on and which lens? and framerate?
Very good review, I am almost sold but though I found a microphone in the accessories, "compatible with EOS with a jack", I found no mention if the SL2 has the jack. Can I find the answer here? Thanks!!
Absolutely loved the self portrait at 14.04 ! Also, great informative video!
Hope that helps.
thank you!
I’m starting out trying to get the T6i for my first DSLR camera
This camera is definitely on my radar. Thanks.
Nicholas Jacob what are you ?
What is the advantage of each?
my sl2 is getting delivered today, f*ck yeah!
Sorry if this is irrelevant , may I know what watch are you wearing? Looks cool
Hello Dear , I have a question , which is best for video from Nikon D5300/D3400 , Canon 750D/200D/700D ? Please help , it's gonna be my first DSLR.
Shubham Sharma sameee
Best review of SL2 ever seen fantastic Job
I love the size and form factor of the SL2 but I’m concerned and torn whether I’m going to get a good video images as a filmmaker. 3 yrs ago they made a feature film with an iPhone 6 (I think) and it looked ok but nothing to write home about. So now I happen to own A Samsung S9 which shoots 4K but I only have one lens on a phone. So because of that I’ve been looking at the SL2 as an entry level film camera........ Your thoughts Snap chick.
Nikon d5600 vs canon 200d which one is best for photography
Now that it's the end of 2018, does this still apply? Are there other cameras in this price point that are...dare I say...a better option?
Nice work Snap Chick! Thank you for posting.
Would it be fair to say that you assess this camera to be competent? I am curious to know what you thought about the A6000?
Do you think portrait photos taken in 200d will pass or will look like a professional photo?
To adjust on camera flash output, put up the flash, go to the settings screen and push the set button and then use the "Flash Exposure Compensation" adjustment that appears right under the ISO read out. It will adjust the flash output by two stops plus and minus.
I want a full manual setting, like full power, half power, 1/32, 1/64, etc...
You are great at sales. I really want an SL2 now
Just got this at B&H (price match of $499 with Beach) and the camera is terrific.
Hi what camera and lens have you used to shoot this video.? Its so much sharp
Great vid, thank you. Thinking about taking the leap into the dslr world and I think the 200D would be a great all rounder. I'm in England and can get a 200D with a 18-55mm STM lens for £529 which seems like a good price for the UK.
I found your vids very helpful.
With SL2, when we use a Canon EF lens in manual focus mode - why doesn't the green light display when you achieve manual focus?
When shooting video, is AF just for those 9 points or the whole screen? Or if you choose manual can you focus anywhere on the screen or just those 9 points?
Will EFS 18-135mm f/3.5 - 5.6 IS STM be ok for this camera?
What is the buffer time of sl2 on RAW & JPEG?
How is the lack of autofocus points in the viewfinder?
Or is the dual pixel auto focus on live view better?
So, this camera can definitely do good portraiture shots? Shots that a paying client would be happy with?
Hey Snapchick!
How is the screen's sunlight visibility. I wish to use only the liveview for both stills and videos.
12:02 ..and the *earth shattering* technique behind the new AF system is called [correct me if I'm wrong] *dual pixel* . Right? Other than this minor omission - great video.
How do you feel about if you have to take the photo and later take the noise out using programs like Lightroom etc
I can't remember the last time I used noise reduction in editing software. However, if you are in the situation where you find the noise in your image unacceptable, I think software is great!
Great review!! But actually you can configure the flash settings. It's just a little bit tricky...
I want but in white it looks so good in white
Elizabeth D YEAH!
Thank you for the review Snapchick! i was considering this or the Nikon D3400 and i think i'm going with the nikon. What do you think?
The autofocus is indeed great with this camera!
Austen Skylar go with the Nikon, the D3000 series are highly underated, I had a D3300 for 2 years and loved it and sometimes I miss it
I recommend looking at used DSLRs on ebay or other auction sites from highly rated sellers. Unless you absolutely need that "new camera" feel, there really isn't any reason getting a used camera would be a bad thing, especially if it saves you money that could be put towards better lenses or gear that makes your life easier.
If you want to do macro photography, it is better than any Nikon. Live View is essential, and this focusses in live view like nothing else
Price for IQ is excellent. With a zoom lens it's an easy carry all day. Are you going to consolidate your Nikons for the D850:D
You did not want to wait couple days for shipping so you opted to wait indefinite days until you get prime shipping? :D
Hey dear! I was using nikon d5300 and wana shift to this buddy ie canon d200 but it's limited auto focus points are something which I am worried about, on the same time I love bird photography which might require more auto focus points. Is this one for me or not..
That depends on personal preference. I suggest trying one out in a shop to see if the fewer autofocus points bother you. :)
In your opinion, Would this camera be ideal to shoot quality videos for UA-cam to promote my business products?
Thanks for your time!!
Tony
Thanks! I'm not sure that you'd find the SL2 to be significantly different in size. There are slight tweaks to the form factor, but nothing major.
Hi,
Which camera would you advise as a first DSLR: Nikon D5600, or the Canon SL2/EOS200d?
Thanks!
What camera and lens did you use to make this video?
Does the screen flip out parallel or point off to the side slightly like my annoying 700d
The sigma 18-35 1.8 for crop is excellent - I think they are coming out with their own 24-70 2.8 with IS soon too iirc.
Most attractive photographer i have ever seen.
I’m using canon Rebel SL2 and I’m not able to shoot video (1080 at 60 FPS) it allows me to shoot 1080 at 50 FPS. Please suggest me the method by which I can shoot videos (1080 at 60fps)
Waiting for your reply
Thanks.
That's strange... You should have an option for 59.94p at FHD. It's not listed?
best review on the sl2 , thank you soooo much
Can you shoot video looking through the optical viewfinder?
