John you absolutely must get The Outsiders the Complete Novel. The Complete Novel version adds almost 30 minutes of video and it has a much better soundtrack than the standard version!
Technically you can make the argument that The Shining is a 70's film since it was filmed in 1978 thru 1979 but released in 1980.Filming was from May 1978 to July 1979. Principal photography took over a year as you can see. Kubrick was famous for his long shoots. So really, it can still be looked at a a 70's film because the majority of the film was made in 78 and 79.Just the tail end, some of the post production was early 1980. It was released in May 1980 in the U.S.. I always watch The Shining now paired with Doctor Sleep. Mike Flanagan. made that in a way that it truly works as a faithful adaptation and sequel to King's novels and a sequel to Kubrick's film .It works for both which is probably why King is a fan of Flanagan's film. It satisfies him as a adaptation of his novel and restores some of the themes lost in Kubrick's film but also King acknowledged that while he has major problems with Kubrick's adaptation, for fans of it, Flanagan movie. also works well a sequel to the movie.
I agree with everything you said. I can’t watch The Shining without watching Doctor Sleep. I actually did a review of them both together but that’s a really old video so I don’t recommend it loll. Mike Flanagan did a great job on the sequel and I get why King liked that version and hated Kubrick’s version of The Shining. He’s my all time favorite Writer but I still prefer Kubrick’s vision over Kings. Even though I don’t hate the 97 mini series it’s just not what I think of when I think of The Shining.

It was cool to see you got the same steelbook as me for Poltergeist... I actually really liked the swimming pool art, and the way they had a variation of the classic "They're here" imagery on the back.

Hoping Kino changes their mind and puts FLETCH out on 4K after all the heat they got .. much like what happened for .. THE ITALIAN JOB ... with Michael Caine. They announced it on blu then Kino changed their mind after many people complained it should be on 4K instead.
For reference: the critics lied about Carpenter's The Thing. And we all believed it. Didn't actually find out they were lying until The Thing aired on Showtime. That was a massive hit job, possibly coordinated by Universal's own public relations department, in support of their other major release at the time, E.T. But we have shown Carpenter's film nothing but love since then. Promise.
It’s his best film in my opinion. I have always wondered what critics saw when The Thing came out. From the first time I saw that film I was in love with it.

My oldest movie experience i can recall is alien when i was 4 and up chucked my hot dog when the alien popped out of the guys chest. Movies were more fun then because they were more creative in their simplicity or their special effects. Well at least to me

But they’re at least real and don’t look like someone is standing in a cartoon world loll. I would choke on my Hotdog too if I was eating one the first time I saw that scene lol

It was panned when it came out. That’s why it took Robin williams years after it to get his acting Career going again. I don’t get it. Maybe it just came out at the wrong time? I always thought it was good but I wasn’t around then lol
Great list, think you’ve covered it all. I’ll add Van Damme’s Bloodsport 4K UHD SteelBook release from Germany to the list, absolutely stunning 4K transfer and a great JCVD movie.
I still have never seen Roadhouse. I was gonna blind buy it. I'm stubborn, so when I missed out on the limited edition from Vinegar Syndrome, I didn't buy it at all. I'll get around to streaming it someday, then probably really regret missing out on it.
I get being Stubborn though, It was pretty expensive and if you haven’t seen the film there’s no way to know if it will be worth the risk. I try and check out a movie on streaming before I buy it physically.
I really enjoyed Red Dawn on 4k. It was my first time watching it, and I loved the movie and great video IMO. Going back and watching Patrick Swayze movies let's me I know didn't appreciate him enough when he was here. I have Dirty Dancing on 4k I still need to watch. I thought Trading Places and Ferris Buller's Day Off had a nice picture. And I just got Planes, Trains, and Automobiles the other day and watched that 4k even through I watched the Blu ray a few months ago.
Red Dawn was a great movie and a great 4K! Patrick Swayze had this window where he was probably the biggest actor in the world but it was short from about 88-91 then he kind of fell off. But he has some great movies!! I’m curious to hear what you think about The Plains Trains and automobiles 4K. Am I too hard on it? lol
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia I think Planes, Trains, and Automobiles could have looked a lot better on 4k. The first thing I noticed is that the image looks soft and lacks that nice layer of fine grain that is in movies like Red Dawn, Christmas Vacation, or Point Break. Then there's Weird Science that I noticed looked very grainy. I'd say PT&A is watchable but not optimal, so I think your review is a fair judgment.

Die Hard, Predator, Scarface, E.T, The lost boys, Full Metal Jacket, Top Gun, Beetlejuice, The Last Emperor, The Running Man, Coming To America, Beverly Hills Cop, Batman to name a few. 80s was clearly an incredible decade for movies 👏 also a good idea for a video would be to do top 10 80s movies that havent yet got a 4k release.
That is a fantastic idea. I’ll def be doing that and I also want to do my top 10 of the 80s overall. Great list as well. Running Man maybe should have made the list. I just rewatched that and it’s really good. It was a tough Omission.
I had the bluray it was about the same as picture only the sound was a slight improvement on 4k. Put it this way for saving the extra dollars I rather have the bluray.@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
I was lucky enough to see The Thing on its initial release. Being 15 at the time I didn’t appreciate it for what it was. I thought it was great for all the goo and gore, but would only realize many years later that it’s the unrelenting paranoia which sends this movie into classic status. Love that Carpenter inspired Morricone score also!
The score really is incredible. It matches the film so well and builds up the dread. The effects also still hold up to this day. I’m pretty jealous you got to see it when it came out. I always imagine what it would be like just to randomly go into a theater and see a classic film.
I just saw (and bought) The thing for my first time in 2022. It immediately became one of my favorite movies. It's one of those rare movies that I rate a 10.
It’s just an unbelievable box set. There is extras in every disk and there is still a disk of just extras. Numerous commentary tracks. If you’re a fan of that movie they have you everything and more. But if that movie isn’t for you then it’s not worth it. It can be pricy but if you’re a huge fan I can recommend getting it imported.

FULL METAL JACKET 4k makes my Top 10 80s' it has great sound and video quality. Also DRAGON SLAYER.
Your right about Full Metal Jacket but ai could only pick one and I chose The Shining but your not wrong at all.

I didn't think the 4k transfer of Poltergeist was all that in sound or video. I was disappointed in that 4k.
I thought it was a huge jump from the previous blu ray to 4k. I also thought the artwork was really good for both the steelbook and slipcover.

If the disks changed I would buy the new artwork but at the time this was what was available. It’s Indiana Jones I had to have it on day one loll.
