why I'd rather have a tomahawk than a pack axe for day hikes and bushcraft

- I prefer tomahawks because I can remake a handle easily in the woods. it's actually so easy that I don't carry one with me when I go for hikes. my folding saw weighs about the same as the handle for my tomahawk, I'd rather carry the folding saw and make a new handle whenever I need one....
#survival #tips #lifehacks #2023 #tomahawk #wilderness
Because having a real handle on it in the first place is ludicrous 🤣all that extra weight .
I weighed the folding saw, and the handle that came with the tomahawk weighed more than my folding saw
If you want a handle, you might still get the most utility out of a tomahawk. You can pack it more compactly, the handle could serve multiple purposes and it's much much more easily replaceable
Plus its easier to conceal...
@@olivern.karlsson3927tomahawks are absolutely awful at splitting firewood. Which is crazy considering that’s the number one thing you do with an axe in a bushcraft scenario. They have no wedge shape and the eye of the axe gets in the way of penetrating further into the wood. There isn’t a single bushcraft survival instructor on the face of this planet that will ever even remotely agree that a tomahawk has more uses than a regular axe. They’re good at limbing trees and fighting. That’s where their utility ends. Wooden handles way less than a pound. Just carry an axe.
@@heithheithinson2495 I see your point, but there are multiple tomahawks that don't have the characteristics that you describe as well.
Or perhaps that is pushing the definition of what a tomahawk is? 🤔
Please try to use that to strike anything
Next time I remember to film I'll do some throwing for you.... It was a crappy handle but it did the job
@@trumpocalypsesurvivalthat handle didn’t do a job. It pretty convenient you filmed all of that but not the one thing the axe is meant for.
To be fair I like carrying both one for the bulk of my work the tomahawk and the felling axe for heavy chores though really lean on the tomahawk more in most cases it bites deeper then a full felling axe but yea a good saw makes things handy too
What Tomahawk do ya prefer? Or what's this Tomahawk? Nice thanks for sharing ⚡👍⚡
I also like a tapered fit so it tightens as you swing, instead of straight which would need a wedge of wood to then taper the end of the handle.
Love that.
while i love tomahawks and agree about taking a tomahawk over a camp axe when backpacking or hiking, i would not use that branch as a handle. its way to dry and dead.
Yep I would only use it as a handle to make another handle, I think that was the point.... I figured I'd get a lot of comments like this and I appreciate it
Scatchet, just goti e, works way better than I thought it would.
Nice one.
Bro man sound like john marston for rdr2
I guess I need to play more Red Dead redemption 2 so I can know if you're right or not, I've never liked the sound of my own voice
Invest in a silky saw, you won’t regret it
I actually prefer Corona over silky because silky saws are too brittle. But you're right they are a great saw
@@trumpocalypsesurvival not to be that guy but I think you might be using them wrong, they’re pull cut saws, the only way I could see you snapping one is if you bind it on a push. I use mine every other day and I’ve cut several telephone poles with the katanaboy when my chainsaw has been out of commission and I’ve had both my gomboy and katanaboy for roughly 7 years now and I’ve never so much as chipped or snapped either of them
probably the worst piece of wood you could use as an example
Yep that was intentional.... Just having some fun looking for responses and comments.... But it does show that you could use anything to make your first handle and then make better handle with whatever you cut down.
How well would it perform with a longer handle? Better (but still worse than an axe of that size) or worse completely?
They're great with longer handles... And even better with properly fit ones... I guess the point is you can pack it in a tiny pouch and get the job done in the middle of nowhere for almost no weight.... And very little volume in your hiking bag
@@trumpocalypsesurvival thanks for the feedback. I'm a collector myself and was deliberating over adding another item to my collection 😁
I focus on tool-axes and previously I've viewed tomahawks as weapons mainly 😅
@@olivern.karlsson3927 with the tomahawk it's all about the eye size, when you think about it a lot of older pickaxes are the same thing. All you need to do is make a slip-on handle so you can rehandle it in the woods very easily.
Thank you again for your comments and questions... I truly appreciate it 🙏
@@trumpocalypsesurvival You're a very polite person. Something that is often and regrettably forgotten these days.
Also your channel is neat so I took the liberty of subscribing! Keep up the good work 😁
@@olivern.karlsson3927 thank you very much.... I think a lot of people don't understand why I named it what I did but that's okay.... And I am glad to have another subscriber.
Laziest and useless handle ever.... 😁.
Tomahawks are a great on foot option, though. A proper axe will be superior to a hawk, BUT, hawks are much lighter, and put a longer handle on and they can still do a surprising amount of chopping and splitting for their smaller size.
For being light on foot, a large knife and tomahawk is where it's at for North America. The Native Americans rolled like that forever. Even in winter. You don't need a large shelter nor require massive amounts of firewood if you know how to do things efficiently.
"White man builds big fire, stands back. Indian builds little fire, huddles close."
Modern-day advantage is the folding saw, tomahawk combo
I think a better answer is a all steel tomahawk that doesnt need a replacement handle
I'm not a big fan of the all steel handle tomahawks, I like to throw my hawk and those steel handles will warp and snap if you hit a Target wrong. But I'm sure there are people out there that prefer them

I love your comment but I disagree. They are great for lemming trees they're all so good for dropping trees when you need to they're great for building shelters, and different tomahawks have different eye profiles, some are better for splitting than others I'll fully agree with you but not every log needs to be split so you can have a fire some of the most efficient fires just crossed four down trees and push them towards each other all night. Others you're laying two or three trees on top of each other and then burning in between them creating a long fire to stay warm in a survival situation. It's all about whether or not you would carry the tool with you. My tomahawk can sit in my back pocket without a handle. But thank you so much for your comment, it looks like you probably know your way around the wilderness if you have such a strong standpoint on whether or not an ax is better
Me and my people whether it be my ancestors, my island or the family that taught me have used tomahawks religiously. I have many friends I bushcraft with in the states and truth be told I not only keep up but move quickly near them even with my "inferior" tool. Maybe you have not tried a good tomahawk. Or maybe you are trying to use it like an axe instead of it's own tool. Either way there's 100's of years of living and passed history to prove how misguided you truly are.
I find this comment interesting "no bushcraft instructor" . I'm no instructor I guess, and I was not raised with the words bushcraft. But I do teach my kids , my family and my town with a tomahawk. As did my father , and his before. Infact all day of us hacking to build our lively hoods and live on this tiny island has everyone I know carried a tomahawk and machete. It is not our hobby either , it is our way of life. It is sharpened steel. It's versatility in the right hands are endless. In the wrong unworked hands, I suppose it's just for delimbing and weapons.
to be fair he's right just could of picked a better branch and made a better handle, like what is that trash put in some effort.
Yeah that was the point, you can always make it better handle with a crappy handle.... I actually carry a tomahawk head and a folding saw because my folding saw weighs less than my handle... I can make an unlimited number of handles with that little folding saw
LOL
A handle made of rotten wood? ok. lol
Bro you can get a hatchet handle for like $7... one that won't send that head flying like that "handle" will. You're better off cutting a live limb off a standing tree
Is that frontier hawk
I cut the pipe end off a pipe hawk
@@trumpocalypsesurvival thats cool fast and easy handle
@@vladimirkovacevic1656 absolutely perfect for cutting yourself a better handle
Out of all the potential limbs you could have picked you found the dead cracking piece of wood on the ground to choose from. You have no place trying to teach bushcraft.
If you haven't figured out that was on purpose, I don't know what to say. Stay tuned check out the other crap I post you never know what you'll see
Thats the dumbest tbing ive heard all day haha
Well you must not watch as much UA-cam as I do.
Spoken like a man who has very little dirt time. The idea of this being better than a 19" wetterlings or Bruks is pretty silly to be kind.
It's only better in a wilderness survival situation because replacing the handle is easy and you can pack it without the handle for simplifying your load out....
This video is useless, carrying the ax already with the handle is much better because the wood is not rotten and is protected from water. The weight of wood is not so great that only metal will support it. This video is useless as I already said also because the reason for carrying only the ax head that you explained is not a reason.
Oh dang, right cuz the handles are far too heavy right? XD also you put the head on upside down
clown
My folding saw weighs less than the handle that came with it. And the head's not on upside down
Thanks for the most generic reason to carry a tomahawk
Thanks for the comment.
Which tomahawk is that?
It was a pipe hawk that I took a grinder to.... Wanted to make it fit in my day bag...
Nice
Thank you you're the first person who's written a comment under any of my videos recently...
If you've never thrown a tomahawk you really should give it a shot.
