Oh wow! Thank you so much!
"Come on now" gets me every time. I think we need a Brown'stone Funk album where that's the only vocal part.
Lol! I'll get to work on the grant application.
Funkatonic.. thanks for sharing these videos. Opened up new doors for my playing while explaining some things I’ve already been playing but had no idea musically what they are in language that’s more easily understood . Keep em coming

Dorian Pentatonic and Lydian Pentatonic would be great descriptive names for the minor and major versions of this scale. This channel is amazing by the way, I love how each video always leaves you with fun things to jam around with, cheers!
Thanks so much, Jake. That means a lot, brother.
Another mind-blower! Great stuff on your channel. I'm growing with every video!
This makes me very happy. Thank you so much, Jamie.
Funkadorian Brown Note - love your stuff!
This should be called „Funkatonic Dorian“ 😁👍
Its a kumoi pentatonic. It Already exists Rich.
The Kumoi, or Hon Kumoi Shiouzhi scale, is a pentatonic scale that has a very exotic or, more specifically, Japanese sound.
Theres a bunch of other ones too, like the hirajoshi scale. I git to know them from the book ‘Improvising Jazz Bass’ by Rick Laird.
@@Monkeygroover "Boooring! come on now"
@@eky kumoi might not seem a flashy name but those ancient scales are not excately boring. I guess you just don’t care much about some musical history 😀. But hey! Keep groovin anyway!
Walter Sobchak?
love this video man, rich at his best!
I think the "Stank Pentatonic Scale" makes sense. Or...we could include the dominant 7th as well, and call it the Stank Hexatonic. After all, it is that Stank note we're adding.
A good bridge to change keys also
Love it. I am evolving. Practicing with direction.
This is what I love to hear. Thank you so much.
Minor Fifth scales in root Position to learning's some a lot thing being smart Am , Bm Cm and Dm .
Thank you sir. I`m inspired
My pleasure, Jonas. Thanks very much for watching.
Super cool, SOLID! 🔥❤️

This man promised the world. And delivered.

Dr. Funk'nstein is in da' house! Thanks for another excellent lesson Rich!
Haha! My pleasure, Brent. Thank you for watching.
Once you hear the “Come on now” you know Rich is feeling it
You got that right, brother. LOL!
There's a drummer called Rob " Beatdpwn" Brown that is absolutely fantastic. you are a bass version of his lessons. Just love it.😁😁😁
First time I've seen one of your videos. The title really caught my attention. I thought, so many different factors working together, determine whether music is funky. So I had to check it out, and see what you had to say. I did enjoy this very much! I better quit now, so I don't start rambling on too much.
I appreciate that, Carl. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. I do my best to grab your attention with the titles, but once you've clicked I really have to deliver. So it's good to know the content is as appealing as the title. Thank you very much for watching!
Badass lesson, thx! C’mon now..
Funk-a-tonic scale
bro u make it so clear💪🏾💪🏾
Thank you, brother.
Amazing sir..thank you soo much ❤️🙏
My pleasure, Mahesh. Thank you for watching.
In the Bb Major funk scale, the movement from D-E-G-Bb totally reminded me of something…Funkadelic’s Hit It and Quit It! I don’t think they used your scale, but your scale overlaps with the main guitar line from that tune and it is sooo funky!
Good ears, MrVentures! They do use this exact scale starting from the 5th. I can't remember the key right now but the line goes 5th-maj6-8ve-min3rd etc...before eventually coming down to the root. I love that tune. SO FONKEE!!!
@@richbrownbass 💪
I liked this Thanks, well done!
My pleasure. Thank you for watching.
Eye brow solo! Lots of good shizzle here!
Eyebrow is the new cowbell! 🤨
I call it Dorian Pentatonic and Lydian Pentatonic
pow! super funky
Wow, very nice, Rich! When I pratice this, I think I'll call it a 'Penta-Funk' scale exercise, haha. Thanks! :-)
That's what I was going with.
Aww man, what are you doin’ to me?! 😆
Yup, yup… there it is!
Yikes! Ok, ok, we’re movin’ along and it’s YIKES, what was THAT stanky ass oops?!
It’s the Brownstone PentaStanky scale!
👍😎👍
Watching from Ghana🇬🇭
The "B"Funk pentatonic Scale!
I really like Rich Brown he’s such a nice guy
I honestly was expecting you to say the muted note was the funkiest.
I think it's a 3 way tie between maj 6, maj 3rd and flat 5.
It woul be great to listen this note in a different music fragments
this is a very useful piece of music theory, thank you so much for educating the fellow low-end dedicated public :) one question - which modes and scales do the funkiest notes work in? I noticed it's Dorian for the minor 6th
Thanks a lot Denis. Yes! The mode for the minor would be Dorian, and on the major you'd play Lydian.
you got the riddum brother
INTRODUCING: The Funkatonic scale, by Rich Brown
Clearly, it should be called the funkatonic scale.
How about the "Sixth Sense Pentatonic Scale"
Thanks for the suggestions. I figured your "funkiest note" would be the second or sixth when I saw your title.
I've recognized the Power of the Sixth since I first heard that the Beatles song "She Loves You" ends on a VI chord. It's used very effectively in folk music, as well. However, these songs were all in major scales, so it's interesting to hear of the major sixth being used in a minor pentatonic.
I'll give it a try, but I think my bandmates will accuse me of playing a note off-key.
i have to watch it twice ... to really learn
Brown-Tonic Scale
great video man
Thanks so much, Brandon.
Brownstone minor funkatonic
Fantastic video! Can you do a video on call and response?
Sure, Joel. Stay tuned, and thanks for the kind words!
this is nice;.....thx!
Thanks very much, Manfred.
oh my goodness thank u for showing us the funkiest note in the world 🙏⚡️ hope you are having a great summer and love your new videos! - Olivia
Thanks, Olivia. Nice to hear from you.
Brownstone Funkatonic Scale! There's the name!!!
I'm down with that!
COOL
Minor funkatonic scale.
Rich funk is the name! Another beautifully simple, but “rich” lesson. C’mon now!
Haha! Thank you, my brother.
Thank you, my brother! These videos make my day!!
Righteous Stink Face For A Simple G Minor - The Four Note Pattern Actually Helped Me Settle In And Play Loose - Way Cool - Go Team Human
Cheers
Yes, Travis. Thank you, my man. That's another goal for Team Human!
MINOR 6TH PENATONIC Nice video Brownstone I like they way you explained it. Blues Guitarist Robben who worked briefly with Miles Davis in 1986 and who was was also in the Saturday Night Live band with Marcus Miller in 1986. He is known for using this scale, the proper name for this scale is Minor 6th Pentatonic. If you type "Minor 6th Pentatonic " there are many videos on youtube about it not even mentioning Robben Ford.
One of these is a funky bassline backing track called :
"Minor 6th Pentatonic Lick/Tab + JamTrack"
another video using this scale that features great bass playing solo is called:
"NNBS The Minor 6 Pentatonic scale"
A-C-D-E-F#.
Also try the John Coltrane Pentatonic
A-B-C-D-F#-
and switch between this and the other
Great Lesson? Any tabs or notes list. A bit more info on what a major 6 is pls
The PentaFunk scale!
I would like to hear it in a context with a backing track. Just to have a practical example. That would be nice.
One of your neighbours is checking in & he's only got to 3.28.... He recalls a breakdown of Fleas line on You Ought To Know & whoever it was said something like '& in bar * hear how Flea drops that major 6th in & hear how it adds such a welcome colour/change' etc etc etc... 😊 👍
Yes, brother Andrew! #facts
@@richbrownbass I went on & watched the rest of the video & came up with loads of ideas! (G on the 1st beat with a walk up, [3 & 4] to E landing on the 4th beat, 2nd time round, repeat but walk down to Bb...classic Talking Heads vibe - Love it!!
Funkatonic scale!
What about the beginning of the five strings bass
It’s a minor 6 pentatonic scale. That’s what it’s called in some circles. Root, m3, 4th, 5th, M6, Root.
Yes, yes, yes… totally right.
But we changed it to The Brownstone FunkaTonic Scale.
Didn’t you get the memo?
I thought for sure I added you to the memo distribution list.
It’s MY fault. I blew the memo distro again!
😫
I'm a older cat that played bass in high school and have found it again, but now I'm more into the bass in loving it. But have a way to go someone give me good direction right now I'm working on learning the bass notes or ABC's or 123's along with speed and ear coordination n timing ???
haven't watched yet but it's gotta be the natural 6!
BOOM!!!
Brownstone Funkatonic scale.
👍😎
I agree with you, but I like a minor 6 like nothing else! Maybe it's the bluesy-est note in the world.
Brownstone funkatonic
The Funktatonic!
can't think of something funky in G with the 6th in there without thinking of Cult Of Personality
How about PentaFunk Maj&Min. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge but with much love!
That works. Lol! Thank you for watching, and thank you for your kind words. Means a lot.
MR.BROWN CAN YOU DO A LESSON ON HARMONICS
I sure can. Stay tuned!
