Snorkeling with kids for the first time

Austin loves seeing animals and learning new things, so when we were in Maui I made sure to take him “snorkeling” so he could see these things for the first time. We went out on Kaanapali beach at black rock. The water was calm first thing in the morning, and there was very few people out. It was a little tricky, but a lot of fun and he loved it! I bought him an under water viewer for kids, this way his face wouldn’t need to be in the water and he wouldn’t need to breathe through a snorkel(link below). I also rented a boogie board for him to float on(along with his pfd). This way he could float face down, look through the viewer, and see all the things I was seeing! If you have kids who are interested in snorkeling but might be a bit too young, this is a great way to expose them to ocean life. I maintained a hold on the back end of the boogie board for safety, this kept the balance to the rear(with Austin far enough forward to see in the water, the board tipped forward) and kept the board stable side to side. There wasn’t a lot of time to experiment with different ways, but you could probably also use the board backwards since there’s a u shaped notch on the back that might allow better weight distribution.
