My truck has 360,000 kms and this idea worked excellent!! 2 hits for me. If anyone one else is looking to do this I want to add that you only need to take off the fresh air intake but nothing else. I left my shroud and hose untouched, I had no problem getting the fan assembly out. total time to loosen fan, remove and replace clutch and install was 20 minutes.
Wow. When I saw the pipe wrench fly, I was amazed. I have a 5.0 L in a Mounty, and I am not sure I have enough guts and the precision aim to utilize the same method.
7/17/21 I'm in a wrecking yard trying to get this very fan off. How do I do it? I think to myself "Google it". This video came up and saved the day. Thanks for posting this, however many years ago, it still was relevant today. Good job and thanks again.
Awesome trick I tried my own way for a while with no success it took a few taps with your method and the fan clutch came loose within minutes. Thanks for the cool video.
If this doesn't work for you. Remove one of the nuts from pulley. Grab a small chain, dog choker chain works great! Place nut through link and reinstall nut. Then secure other end of chain somewhere on engine. Then you can wrench on fan nut as much as needed.
Gotta be careful tho or you will fuck the pulley up. Or make that hole alot bigger lol. Ususlly this guys video what he does is how I break most of em loose on most vehicles. Sometimes u gotta use the tool to hold the bolts or if no bolts like dodges. They make a tool with little studs coming out to hold the pulley. Has a half inch drive sqaure to stick a breaker bar in It. It's a tight fit tho. If u have the right wrench and the holding tool. Take 30 seconds to break loose. Went to ranken for 4 years. Also, squirt a little pb blaster on the nut
Used this method and it works perfectly---thanks for sharing! One single whack as shown and the fan clutch spun free. I did buy the Gear Wrench #3900 Universal Pulley Holder as my serpentine belt didn't hold the water pump pulley tight enough to loosen the nut. I don't anticipate doing this job ever again but if I do I'll add a 36mm open end wrench to my stable of Ford 5.4 motor tools. Please note the pipe wrench needs to be adjusted so it contacts the nut in three 3 places---the two jaws and the movable jaw back strap need to be touching the nut. This way you don't leave marks on the new nut.
being a guy a diyer i was tring to take it off and was a little stuck trying to take it off i said im not gonna youtube it im not gonna youtube it and.... i did and made my work much easier thanks......
Of course he had it loose. That’s why the shroud is already gone. Breaking the fan nut loose is easy. Getting the fan and the shroud out hurts. The proper tool can be rented at any parts store.
Nope, just gave it a good whack with the right mallet (2.5lbs). If you live in areas with higher humidity, or get a lot of salt on the roads, it'll probably take a bit more persuasion.
Thanks. I did have success with a chain and a ratchet strap . Once is bolted the chain the to the pulley I strapped the chain down and used a pipe wrench

I tried it on my 184k 5.4 and it worked perfect. Thanks for saving me an hour of work.
Right on man! I'm glad it worked!
jimmy Marshall I don’t understand how the wheel stop stops spinning
Thanks it worked for me on first try. A 7 year old video and still helping again thanks

Thanks. Greatly appreciated.
Yup a BFH always gets the job done. Thanks for sharing!👍🏻
Simple but effective. Nicely done
Thanks!

Nice. I've always used a pry bar on the bolts but this looks easier. Thanks
Not much room ,I've done the same. Pry bar on bolts. And a good whack like be did gets most of them loose

Oh and it was a 1995 Ford Explorer I was working on with a 4.0 engine just for the record, thanks again.
Such a strong man

THANKS MAN REALLY HELPFUL.....my dad was trying to pull it off ended up cutting his hand with the fan lol
That sucks man! I'm glad this helped!
Every things always so easy online! I think i'll shock it.
Pro tip: watch series on kaldrostream. Been using it for watching loads of movies recently.
Apply 'shock' ....love it
Worked better than the air hammer on this one !
being a guy a diyer i was tring to take it off and was a little stuck trying to take it off i said im not gonna youtube it im not gonna youtube it and.... i did and made my work much easier thanks......
Nice dude! I’m struggling with this, so I might try this
A trick: you can watch series at Flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies recently.
@Gustavo Jaxton definitely, I have been using flixzone} for since december myself =)
Yes right-handed thread. Some autos have left handed . I used same method with a crowsfoot & long handled 1/2 drive ratchet.
Worked perfectly for me thanks 👍
You are the best it worked for me thanks a lot 👍✋🏽
I'm glad to hear it! Thanks for watching
Brilliant I'm going to go try it on my 2004 right now ill update if it worked
Thanks
Thanks for sharing 💪
It worked in one go, thanks!
Sweet! I'm glad it helped you out. All the best
Dam. I better put on my pullies and tensioner back on..i was wondering how I'd take it off
Well done!;)
Thanks!
THANK YOU SO MUCH
I'm glad it helped! Thanks for watching
Do you have to remove the grill and radiator to change one out?
No. I always pull these from the top after loosening I don't even have to remove the fan shroud just fish the old fan clutch assembly from the top.
How about if changing out the water pump? Can all of this be done, with the radiator and fan shroud in place?
Just Remove the fan shroud, and spin it back, be careful not to puncture a hole in the radiator.
How did you get it back on?
Thread it back on douchebag
I'm try that right now since I also do t have the tool for it. Update I tried it and didn't work so I had to find a tool to remove it.
Can’t do that to a 2007 5.4 due to space. The fan has a disk that holds a wire so not enough room to put a pipe wrench...
That was just a slam to the left , Did you have a hold back
Not sure what you mean by a hold back, but yes.. I just gave it a good whack to the left with a rubber mallet. Thanks for watching!
Nice.😂
Batters up
How is the Pulley not spinning?
He didn't take the belt off. That gives it enough tension
Of course he had it loose. That’s why the shroud is already gone. Breaking the fan nut loose is easy. Getting the fan and the shroud out hurts. The proper tool can be rented at any parts store.
That's wassup
Is that a 14 inch
I have a 03 f150 v8 Triton, does anyone know if the threads are standard or reversed? Because I can't get mine off even with your technique
you probably had it loosened already
Nope, just gave it a good whack with the right mallet (2.5lbs). If you live in areas with higher humidity, or get a lot of salt on the roads, it'll probably take a bit more persuasion.
How about when you beat on it for 2 hours and it doesn't budge? That's why i tried UA-cam.
gtgl2x air hammer
Don't work for everyone.. I've been trying all sorts of ways.. really debating on that stupid tool
Sorry it didn't work for ya, best of luck!
Thanks. I did have success with a chain and a ratchet strap . Once is bolted the chain the to the pulley I strapped the chain down and used a pipe wrench
Kept hitting my pipe wrench came loose in under 12 hits NIOCEEEE’
