    balancing on toes, 2 minutes total
    side leg raises (nice and slow), 10 per side
    straight leg lift to the front, as long as you can
    plank, 30s intervals, as long as you can manage

    I tried this. I don't think I even did the march in place one for a full minute. Very sore and awkward on the board the next day. But the day after that - better than ever. Thanks

    Fact. Beanies help in skating 20 %.

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 років тому +137

      In cold weather yes. But wearing them in warm weather reduces your ability by 10% and rolling it up above your ears reduces your ability a further 20% by dramatically increasing overall douchiness. Think about it. Jagger Eaton could be 30% better overnight!

    There's also an exercise I do to get my ankles stronger (I usually do it when I need to recover from a rolled/sprained ankle) : basically you just lock the tip of your toes against a wall or anything that wont move and you force against it towards the outside of your foot (like the flick of a kickflip) for 30 seconds then rest, and do it several times. You can even do it while sitting if you're bored in class or at the office!

    Great advice! I am 41 and just came back to skating a few months ago. The knee raises and side leg raises helped get rid of having stiff legs. I feel like I can pull my legs higher when I ollie. Thanks, I feel like these exercises are going to be part of my daily routine!

    i just started learning to skate 4 days ago. i'm noticing already that my muscles are too weak to keep myself stable on the board because of how sedentary i've been leading up to deciding to make a change. i'm gonna start doing these consistently while trying to get the courage to even stand on the board and just keep pushing. struggling but this gave me something new to try to help out, thank you so much!!

    Jumping squats helped me get my hops back after taking a break around 2011. I was hanging up on frontside lipslides on the mid setting of my Element flat bar and knew I had to get some exercise in. A few times a week and a month later I was back at my old self. I'm back out of shape and recently hurt myself due to over use, I was skateboarding about 3.2 miles every day to work and my front ankle was hurting real bad. Felt like an arthritic flare up. The pain finally subsided after two months of not riding. Def gonna ease into it this time. Thanks for the video!

    31 years young. Getting back into skateboarding after 5 years off and have been skating for a good 3-4 days of the week for maybe two months now. Muscle memory is still there and tricks are coming back pretty steady, not so much the muscle. The first exercise Ben talks about, that muscle is constantly sore and does not rebound easily or seems to strengthen. From my research it is called the Sartorius muscle. Even After taking a break for a few days to rest and it feels better, that soreness comes back as though It's never been activated in some time after a 1-2 hour session. Also the arches of my feet especially my left pop foot (goofy) are extremely cramped after 10 mins of skating. Switch feels okay. Doing these exercises I instantly feel the burn but in a warm cozy feeling way. Thanks for the tips Ben. I've been glued to your vids for a while now and it's put a whole new perspective into my life that i wish I had when I was 16. Keep em coming!

    • @vperkv6554

      Thts the problem i have, i know how to do all the flip tricks but my body and muscles wont let me do it.
      I try to atleast roll around and push just to build the little muscles you use skating but nit use in ykur every day life ( well, as much as you do skating)
      Frustrating knowing but not being able to do even the basic sht anymore . Doesn't help tht mentally, your afraid to commit to landing because of getting hurt and not being able to work.
      I kid you not, im more comfortable skating switch and nollie more than anything else.
      Everything would be sooo much easier if my body was in skate shape.

    This video really helped me after not skating for almost 10 years.. Waiting on my trucks(indy 149s), wheels(formula four conical 52mm 99a's), and skate shoes(the White es' Accel Everstitch) to arrive, so I've been doing stretches and leg exercises the past 2 weeks to prepare me for getting back on my board, on top of my regular 20 min daily calisthenics routine
    This video has just added a few more exercises to my routine and I really appreciate the quality of these exercises, as I can feel how much they help the specific muscles I will use while skating.
    Very informative video Ben.
    Thanks

    Thank you Ben this was really helpful. I just started skating again a few months ago. I'm 49. Just cruising on the longboard practicing pushing and riding in different stances. I try to do the P90X Core Synergistics workout once a week. My ankles are my weak point so I think the calve exercises will help with that. Also I'm pretty vigilant about stretching after my sessions. Especially my glutes and hamstrings. Thanks again bro keep up the great videos!

      I've heard elastic band exercises are good for that. Or rubber, whatever it's made of. But essentially resistance training. And anything that's going to activate balance and build your stabalizing muscles. I'm just getting into it at 28 thank you for inspiring me.

      Stretching before a sesh helps a tun some pros say this is why they dont get hurt as much at others swears by it .Some like ankle stuf 'other joints ' and some tendons.
      Eddit .... i mostly do ankle stuff to better avoid hurting that joint i think it works in my opinion but im def trying what this vid offers

    Thanks for this video. I've been doing these almost a month and I think they've helped out quite a bit as an adjunct to practicing tricks in my garage. I've taken some exercises a step further: like standing on your tip toes, side leg raises, and straight leg raises, and doing them on my skateboard on carpet. So there's the added reaction of trucks wobbling in the mix. I do these specific ones exclusively on my board now and it helps my balance while getting in the exercise.

    These are freaking excellent and I’ve found them useful as warm ups for other exercises I’ve been doing. I’ve started doing a knee raise variation where I hold weights so there’s a warm up for the arms when my elbow meets my raised knee. They also work side abs I think as well? It’s an efficient move can be done anywhere and I love it.

    Hey man great video. I had a question. I just started skating again after 17 years. I am a single dad with 2 kids a 5 and 10 yo. Both wanted to learn to skate so I figured I would give it a shot again. The problem I have is that 9 years ago I had both of my Achilles tendons torn in half as well as all the ligaments in both ankles. I have been trying to figure out what the best exercise I can do to get the strength back into those areas I was just wondering if you had any ideas?
    I was able to get back on my board and push and ride around but anything more I find my ankles try to buckle....

    Anyone have tips on how to plank without hurting the elbows? Not sure if I just have bad form or if it's just hurt from all the swelbows but I can never do them without my elbows hurting

    Damn I didn’t struggle with any of theses and actually balanced longer then you suggested. Weird flex but ya I guess I’m stronger then I thought 😂

    what’s weird is i’m regular, like that’s more comfortable, but i balance better on my right foot. would it be better to practice balancing on my left foot or try and switch? I’ve been skating for a year but not every week, maybe a couple times a month at most

    I Think squat work as well for jumping higher! And jump taking knew to the chest.. ;)

      Filippo Lescai Nothing you said made any sence. What are you trying to say?

    • @phill93
      @phill93 6 років тому +1

      Chris Berquist my English is bad.. sorry! I meant that if you do squats work as well for the muscle you use for jump! And even another exercise that you jump taking the knee high

    • @runswimplayball
      @runswimplayball 6 років тому

      Filippo Lescai are you trying to say that if you squat it could be substituted for all the exercises that in the video because it targets all the same muscles? If so I disagree there are small stabilizer muscles and skating is a very graceful and agile sport that uses muscles that would never be hit unless your a skater.

    • @phill93
      @phill93 6 років тому +1

      Chris Berquist no.. it's an exercise in more to do..
