    Thanks for the clear explanation, the altitude point was of a great help for me to better understand why my VNAV did not work when I expected it.

    Fantastically explained. Can’t wait to try this out tomorrow. You said it right...doesn’t matter how much you press that button...man I was getting frustrated lol. Thanks again!

      Thanks Carlos. I still struggle with this thing. It doesn't seem to always work right. Still trying to figure it out.

    So I tried this and was very inconsistent. So I set out to figure out why Vnav engaged sometimes and not in others. Turned out that if I just set all the altitudes and set the VNav button for a period of greater than 5 minutes then nothing would happen. You can’t engage the VNav any earlier than 5 minutes away as seen in the VNav profile. Once under 5 minutes away you engage the VNav button and it will react when needed. That Paul fellow mentions it in his video. Says the VNav will “time-out” and nothing happens even if the VNav button is pressed and on. Hope this helps.

      That's interesting Carlos. I must have missed that. This is interesting too: From the Garmin G1000 Pilot's Manual - "If the VNV key is pushed more than five minutes before TOD, an additional acknowledgement is needed from the pilot once the aircraft is within five minutes of TOD. ... The white VPTH annunciator will flash every second for the next minute, signaling that an acknowledgement is required. If neither the VNV key is pressed nor the Selected Altitude is changed prior to TOD, the aircraft will not descend. If the VNV key is pushed after TOD, the aircraft will still not descend, since it is now above the vertical descent profile." So, the big problem is the X1000 does not flash the white VPTH annunciator so you never realize this situation. I guess the lesson to be learned here is to watch the VNAV profile in the flight plan and watch the countdown to TOD and when it clicks under five minutes, you punch that VNV button and hope for the best. Just make sure you don't change the ALTS since the TOD has already been calculated. I need to watch Philip's video again.
      Thanks for this. I'll do some more experimenting!

    Nice presentation. Of course, when I tried it, it wouldn't work. But that's not your fault. Please try to make future videos be is sharp focus ! Thanks

    When using VNAV in a real plane, the G1000 will audibly say "Vertical Path" to advise the pilot that the plane is one minute from the top of descent. That alerts the pilot to press the VNV button and to reset the Altitude Select to an altitude lower than the next VNAV altitude. I thought the X-Plane G1000 also says "Vertical Path," but mine does not. Have you heard "Vertical Path" when you use VNAV in your X-Plane? Your videos are excellent. Thank you for taking the time to do them.

      Hi Lon,
      I've spent some time on this since seeing your post yesterday. Thanks for that!
      No, the G1000 in X-Plane does not give any verbal notices as you correctly observed. The Perspective (I used the HMB Cirrus SR22) however does in fact work as expected. VNV in the Perspective is FAR superior to the G1000 I have found. The annoying >5 min cancellation "BUG" does NOT exist in the Perspective. As soon as I activate the first leg of the STAR, I hit the VNV button (which was about 90 nm out at the time), VPATH armed and 1 min from TOD, I got the callout "Vertical Track." I got beautiful vertical guidance all the way to the target waypoint. I also had an approach loaded and had trouble getting it to automatically sequence. I need to experiment some more with that.
      I decided to do the exact flight my buddies FlyLikeThePros demonstrate in this video:
      ua-cam.com/video/5XWz6FaBIlo/v-deo.html
      I actually started my flight at KMMH and climbed to FL250 before flying to the initial waypoint in the STAR BTY. I added an approach ILS 26L into KLAS to make for a complete flight.
      Also, some of you have had trouble getting VNAV to execute. I think a lot of the problems relate to the Flight Path Angle (FPA). If the distance to the TOD is too far or too close, that angle is either too shallow or too steep for the VNAV system to capture the glide slope. Here is an excellent video that describes this:
      ua-cam.com/video/jwm7ADcQeOE/v-deo.html
      I found some minor differences but it pretty much worked exactly as they describe.
      I would love to hear your experience with this Lon and anyone else reading this that would like to give it a try.
      Cheers!

      @@markfletcher4579 I guess I've watched the FlyLikeThePros videos so many times that I began to think that I was remembering the "Vertical Track" callout from flying the C172/G1000 in X-Plane. That's why I was puzzled when I couldn't hear it in X-Plane, especially because the VNAV function works perfectly for me. I fly X-Plane using Pilot2ATC and have enjoyed and benefitted from your videos about that too. I also use RealSimGear's G1000 suite which adds a LOT to the realism of the sim experience. I'm anxiously awaiting Saturday's release of the RealSimGear/TorqueSim Cirrus SR22, and am hoping (and expecting) that it will have the "Vertical Track" callout. I took a quick look at online comments about the HMB Cirrus SR22, but it seems that -- at least when it was newly released -- users were having difficult getting it to load properly. I've been waiting for the TorqueSim version for quite a while now, and decided I can wait another two days.

      @markfletcher4579  4 роки тому

      Indeed. I'm planning to maybe even delete the HMB on Saturday! I have been waiting for that TorqueSim Cirrus for quite a while myself.

    • @markfletcher4579
      @markfletcher4579  4 роки тому

      Turns out that VNAV does not work right with the TorqueSim SR22. I'm sure they will fix it but the HMB does VNAV beautifully.

      @@markfletcher4579 That's a shame. I bought the TorqueSim SR22, but hadn't yet gotten as far as trying VNAV because so many other more basic things aren't working, on my computer at least.

    Excellent. Would I guess xplane and MSFS work the same. I have both. Or 3. xp11 xp12 and msfs.

    • @markfletcher4579
      @markfletcher4579  11 місяців тому

      They are very close. The nxi in MSFS doesn't time out if you set vnv more than 5 minutes from TOD. I haven't tested x-plane lately so that one might not time out either now. One irritating thing with the nxi is it doesn't show ALTVS the way it used to. Also, there is not indication at all when it starts decending. That is weird as it didn't do that when it was first released. I thought I had something set wrong but after some investigation, I don't see anything to set. Strange.

  • @robertpomfret5679
    @robertpomfret5679 4 роки тому

    Nice explanation and the info was presented fine, however, unless my eyes deceive me, the ALT's were off by 250' or so as at touch down you still showed you at 1000' not the 750' or so of the TDZ ELEV.

      Good catch there Robert! Yep, I never even gave setting the altimeter a thought as I was so involved with VNAV and trying to get that right. Funny I never even noticed it until you brought it up! Thanks for that!

    What does the ALTVS mean? It stayed white the whole Tim VNAV was on.

    • @markfletcher4579
      @markfletcher4579  2 роки тому

      Hi Aviator. Not sure I quite understand. When you say "ALTVS", do you mean ALTV? That will stay white the whole time. The capture is indicated by "VPATH" which is green showing that the GPS is following the vertical descent. Be sure you follow the three rules I spoke of earlier in the video to make sure you meet all the requirements for VNAV to work. If you are still confused, reply back and I'll work with you to get the concept.
      Thanks for watching!

      No, I hit the APR button as soon as I get green needles. That gives me a white GS (unarmed) and it goes green when armed (that part is automatic)
