Greg Lake (RIP) was a master musician, playing acoustic, electric and bass guitar, in addition to being one of the most beautiful voices in contemporary music. And the outro was the amazing Keith Emerson on keyboards. My personal favorite ELP song!! 💙💙💙
Hard to rank 'em; that's one of the problems I run into trying to rank Moody Blues albums or songs -- they're all such masterpieces. But as far as ELP this is probably my #1 track. Next five in no particular order would be "C'est la Vie," "Still You Turn Me On," "Lucky Man," "Karn-evil 9," and "Fanfare for the Common Man."
Decade of the 70s has immense music and talent, it’s there you just need to find it react to it and love it… Thank God we can go back to this kind of music! It does to you today what it did back then makes you stop what you’re doing and sit back and listen to amazement
This is the first song i played for my girlfriend back in 1977. We were married in 1981! 40 years now......."you see it's all clear, you were meant to be here"
This was ELP's highest-charting single -- which I find mystifying as there were plenty of tracks they laid down that were every bit as easy on the ears as "From the Beginning." All in how it's marketed, I guess. Not enough people at the time got much of a chance to hear this tune unless they were permanently tuned to trendy FM stations. At least now it's getting another look and is better appreciated as a masterpiece.

I have a memory with this song, my dad took my brother and I when we were very young to Pales Verdes, hiked down the cliff to see an old wrecked ship, must have heard it in the car 1972. It will always remind me of my dad. He's still here, 90 years old. ❤️❤️❤️
I saw ELK in concert in Los Angeles as a teenager. Best concert EVER! Just one example: Out of kmowhere, the piano started rising into the air, and as Emerson continued to play a jazz-fusion number, the piano began to spin end over end, faster and faster. Incredible!!!
1st Impression (Part 2) was played to death on the radio, back in the day. It's probably the least interesting section of the suite. The album Brain Salad Surgery is a complete work. It opens with a hymn, then goes into Alberto Ginestra's Toccata. This piece is a bit too much for normal people, but sets up the sense of fear and foreboding that sets up the "carnival of evil," yet to come.
I was fortunate enough to have seen them live several times in the 70's. Oh my Jamel, thank you for this ELP song. Always one of my favorites. Please try Still You Turn Me On Live, C'est La Vie and Take A Pebble. ELP is truly outstanding with Greg Lake's beautiful voice adding so much richness. Thanks for this.
When this came out, I was a youngster (13-14 years old) in Cali and our family blended with another's. 3 children became 5 with a mom and new dad. Then we moved to New Mexico and the musical journey continued. The 70's were a WHOLE different way to raise up children. Generous vibes everywhere. It was glorious. Books. Art. Dance. Music. Food. People talking to each other civilly with receptive interest yet able to reconcile and have our own opinions and it was always no harm, no foul. Easy to change the subject: "Did you catch the game?" "Bet I can skate faster than you!" "Wanna build a fort? We're gonna need shovels and axes..."

Moog synth, acoustic piano, Hammond organ. Keith Emerson was one of the all time greats in history. Tragically, he ended his own life because he couldn’t play anymore. Greg Lake wrote these incredible acoustic songs. Those were the ones that got most radio-play. The first single off their first album was their biggest hit “Lucky Man.”
Do you remember watching Edgar Winter Group doing "Frankenstein" and him going to a black machine with a bunch of knobs on it to make those futuristic sounds?" That's the kind of synthesizer Keith Emerson was using. I'm pretty sure that's the case. Stay safe friend...be well...
Well, they are both analog synthesizers, but they are not the same. Edgar Winter played a ARP 2600 and Keith Emerson plays a full Moog modular synthesizer.

My favorite acoustic song! I felt accomplished when I finally learned how to play it. And you can't half-ass sing this one. You have to mean it. You have to go to a place and/or thought or memory to pull it off.
My wife has taught herself how to play guitar during the pandemic. She decided to learn this one! I do my best on the vocals. I'm getting there... She's practicing it right now, purely by coincidence.
'Karn Evil 9 First Impression Part Two' ! Probably the most played song on the radio by E L P! (10) Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Welcome Back My Friends - UA-cam-Debbehossy version...studio version with Lyrics! Great Rocker! "Guaranteed to Blow Your Head Apart!" It will knock your socks off! Thanks as always Jamel...your pal....Paul
Love your reactions Jamel - always brings a smile to my face when I see you’ve got a new post! Also great community that allows me to revisit old favorites and discover new music I’ve overlooked. 🤘🏼 🎶 ♾ 🙏🏼
Beyond classic 70’s Band. I saw them live back in the old Boston Garden. So good and they engaged the crowd. Progressive music like this lives only in recordings now.
ELP is one of my favorite prog rock bands. Before forming ELP, Greg Lake was the lead singer of another great prog rock band named King Crimson. You should listen to some King Crimson songs. My favorites are "21st Century Schizoid Man," "I Talk to the Wind," and "In the Court of the Crimson King."
Jamel did one or two KC songs but the have been blocked. I think "21st Century Schizoid Man" was one of those. I don't know if it's up on his patron page or not.
You can thank Greg Lake for that great guitar playing and vocals and then Keith Emerson for the Moog synthesizer - RIP, lost both of them in 2016. Only Carl Palmer, the drummer, is left. Feel blessed I was alive when their music came out and was constantly on the radio. I was in Jr. HIGH when this came out and ELP was popular. Prog rock at its finest. Please see the video of Greg Lake doing "Still You Turn Me On" and "I Believe in Father Christmas". See one of the greatest guitarists in action. He is perfection and one of the nicest guys ever. You'll love them. "Lucky Man" is great too. Also, see the video of them practicing "Fanfare for the Common Man" at an outdoor stadium in Canada for the Olympics. Yeah, they played the Olympics!!!
Great review Jamel. Trilogy is a great album that many people overlook. ELP is my favorite band of all time and I appreciate the reviews of their music that you do.
Saw them in concert back in1972. Awesome show. Greg Lake was dressed in a white suit, had the spotlight on him for this song. Still have a visual on that.
You should react to their more keyboard heavy songs like Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression Part 2, Fanfare For The Common Man, Knife-Edge, Take A Pebble, Tank, Hoedown, Trilogy, and The Barbarian.
One of my all time favorites. Haunting tune that soothes. I'm glad you did this song. The "different" sounds in songs, like the instrument at the end (organ? synthesizer?) always amaze me how they get worked into the music. ELP always seemed push the envelope. That's true of a lot of the music from the 50's, 60's and 70's. That's what helps them stand the test of time. I truly enjoy your insights.
"the instrument at the end" was a Moog synthesiser. The full jobby, not the 'Mini Moog' which came later. And Keith was an early adopter. Moogs hadn't been around for very long. Very complex and incredibly expensive. Consider that alongside his mastery of it. The man was a legend.

I'M AN OLD FART NOW ,BUT BOY DO I HAVE MEMORIES...I THINK...
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS
PEACE
My favorite acoustic song! I felt accomplished when I finally learned how to play it. And you can't half-ass sing this one. You have to mean it. You have to go to a place and/or thought or memory to pull it off.
My wife has taught herself how to play guitar during the pandemic. She decided to learn this one! I do my best on the vocals. I'm getting there... She's practicing it right now, purely by coincidence.
A timeless mellow classic with awesome guitar work.
J, that’s a Moog Synthesizer. Keith Emerson was one of the first rock musician to use it. It had just become available before recording the song.
Ya gotta check out Still you Turn me On Greg Lakes solo performance he's singing chewing gum and playing a twelve string Amazing musician.🙏
ELP. Yeah. Love these guys.
'Karn Evil 9 First Impression Part Two' ! Probably the most played song on the radio by E L P!
(10) Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Welcome Back My Friends - UA-cam-Debbehossy version...studio version with Lyrics! Great Rocker! "Guaranteed to Blow Your Head Apart!"
It will knock your socks off! Thanks as always Jamel...your pal....Paul
This was a great smokin and chillin song
Was there ever a more perfect song? Whomever got these three gods together... Thank you. My heart. Fricking amazing. Great review! 💗
This is mostly Greg Lake, on vocals, guitars and bass, and some bongos from Palmer. Emerson isn't heard until the synth solo at the end.
I always loved that opening guitar
Love the old music brings me back to the past
Beautiful beautiful song! Mellow.....you drift away listening to it.
Yes. I agree. Epic. I suggested this
Jamel did one or two KC songs but the have been blocked.
Great Song! Thank You For The Great Videos As Always Too😎
Jamel. Thank u. Had forgotten some of these .61 and still rocking in what I hope will continue to be the free world. Peace to everyone.
You look like me listening to this song ... every time ... for the last 50 years! Stunningly beautiful song.
You gotta love some Moog Synthesizer!
What can you say but OMG this group has been one of my favorites since like forever ELP always
"C'est la Vie" by ELP is a very nice song.... Won't be requested a lot but worth a listen.
IMO, “C’est La Vie” is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I've been waiting for this one. The first time I heard this I felt like I had been missing out on a secret.
