  • When making hollow ground blades if you wish to hand sand them you are going to need some sanding blocks that are contoured to the contact wheels radius. Today Journeyman Bladesmith and Forged in Fire Champion Allen Newberry will be making a simple and easy to make radiused sanding block for a hollow ground blade.
Allen Newberry is a Journeyman Smith with the American Bladesmith Society and a Forged in FIre Champion (boar spear, hog spear).

I have done several different blocks Allen the best way to do it is to grind a piece of 2 x 4 with the belt you’re using then trace that onto your block

A better way to get a pattern is just grind it into a 2x4 then trace it to your block, if you use a trizact belt if that’s the last belt you use Being that they are a little thicker use that.

Okay, so this raises a question. The leather backing, does it need to be on the side of thd block that you're working against the blade for the finish? My sanding block for flat grinds is a headless railroad spike I sanded smooth on my flat platen and softened the edges to fit my plunge line. Will putting leather or rubber on the side I sanded smooth help me get a smoother finish faster? Currently it takes me 7-10 hours going from 80 grit to 3,000 grit to get a mirror finish after the buffer. I'm still learning, I've only done 4 mirror finishes so far, the 4th one was very close to being flawless.

P.S. You're one of my absolute favorite FiF contestants.

Thanks! I generally start with a hard sanding block and use the sanding block backed with leather etc. after most of the scratches are removed to help get a smoother finish at the end of sanding (getting all the scratches going the same direction.)

Okay, so I'm sure I'm picking up what you're putting down, I would start each grit with my side-to-side, then get that almost all the way cleaned up front-to-back on the hard block, the do the last bit of front-to-back on the leather backed block before moving to the next grit?
I think I'm gonna try putting some epoxy on a second spike with some Devcon 2 Ton clear after I get home.

I was drawn to this video because I'm trying to figure out a better way to sand the fuller of a short sword I'm working on (and, well it's an Allen Newberry video). It doesn't match the radius of my grinding wheel so I can't just simply get it the way you did. But I think it's still doable.

Maybe you could put something like clay in there to figure out the radius?

      Hmm, that might work.
