Thank you for this Joe. I'm not ready to get into slip casting yet. Not enough space. But I can see where it would open up possibilities that can't be accomplished on a wheel or even hand building. Your videos are always so easy to understand. I appreciate that!

Hi, thank you so much for this video, It gave me so many ideas and new paths to explore. I really like how including new technologies like 3d printing opens up so many new possibilities. Keep it up, I love your work!

I wonder if a glove mold with a hardened outer jacket would be best for little things like this. Uses nearly no silicone and keeps the silicone "sock" from distorting.

Maybe you can find a 3D model of Big Ben. That would make an interesting monolith test tile.

I respect you a lot as a creator, and this was a great and thoughtful video! Will be checking both that podcast and the charity out.
The tiles do look amazing though. I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for when you start doing your own designs for them.

Thanks! It was a fun project and I learnt a lot from it, but I'm glad I've been able to draw a line under it without taking it any further. Hopefully the next version will be equally good!

Great Video. I saw your original test tiles on Glazy and it inspired me to design, 3d print, and cast my own. Have you tried skipping the silicone step and using the resin print directly with plaster? I have had pretty good luck so far with this method. I am using Siraya Tech fast resin (not sure if that part matters), with mold release. The molds don't come out as easy as silicon, but if you make the model with something to grab onto, then its pretty easy. Out of one resin print i have been able to get about a dozen plaster casts so far, with little noticeable degradation.

I tried skipping the silicone on some early tests but found the resin really didn't release well for me even with simpler designs. So it seemed like it would be quite limiting in terms of the possible design - everything I've made since has slight overhangs in the surface texture, which I can get away with via the silicone and clay shrinkage, but wouldn't work if the plaster was applied directly. For more basic moulds it's definitely an option though, and would save a large portion of the cost.

You should make a spiral monolith.

Great video as always. I think my favorite bit was when you decided you weren't going to try and talk through Blender. 😂

Hahaha, yeah. There are some ways in which the logic of Blender is really straightforward once you get the hang of the Bool tool, but I realised mid sentence just how many other things I'd have to explain to get to that point. Another video maybe!

I respect your decision to stop casting the Moai. Thank you for openly talking about it too.

Why not give people an ethical opinion? Why not share your appreciation for moai with the world? If you sell these moai to people and spread awareness for this cultural preservation, that's a net positive. Celebrate the joy of that culture.
People are consumers. If you provide them with the opportunity to give their money towards a product that will be beneficial to cultural preservation, that is GOOD. People think moai are cool.

If you take those huge assumptions and proceed as though they're facts, I can see how you'd arrive at that conclusion. How are you weighting the opinions of the appropriated communities when deciding what constitutes a net positive though?
If people think the Moai are cool, they're welcome to donate to the preservation of them without needing a Moai themed commodity in return.
