I got dysentery and cholera at the same time. I caught dysentery once. As bad as you think it is it’s much worse. I don’t see how anyone could possibly survive it without medical intervention. As soon as you drink anything the water touching the bottom of your stomach triggers the small intestine & then large intestine to start spasming. Then you hear gurgling & you have about 20-30 seconds to make it to your favorite pooping spot. If you were also vomiting I think you’d probably die within a day or two. After you start feeling really dehydrated you start freaking out/obsessing about how you can retain water but it’s impossible. I thought I just had food poisoning for the first 2-3 days but it just kept getting worse. I thought I was going to die until I got to a hospital. As bad as I felt I could feel the effects of the IV drip after about 10 minutes. The whole ordeal mentally scarred me to the point I overcook everything & wont eat anything I think has a chance of making me sick and I won’t go to any country that doesn’t have clean water & plumbing. I shudder just thinking about it. The headache the gurgling guts the dry skin the sandpaper tongue & the taste I had in my mouth 🤢 I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
Jesus.... I'm so glad you were okay 😢 Sounds like an absolute nightmare!! I had food poisoning once and it was the second worst sickness I ever had. Pneumonia being the worst. So I can't imagine stomach stuff worse than food poisoning 😭
You weren’t in Israel were you? They use opium to stop dysentery, or they used to. Watched this girl drink a few ounces. Highest person I ever saw. Apparently it stops the diarrhea cold too. Seems kinder, what you went through sounds awful.
@@dianelipson5420 Interesting! I'm in Canada, but I remember that when I had E.Coli and was in terrible pain (as well as spewing bloody yuck out both ends), one of the things the nurses put in my IV was Dilaudid. Not opium, but an opioid. I wonder if it was used as more than just a very effective painkiller? I have to say, the relief alone was blissful, and then I fell asleep for a good few hours!
I’ve had salmonella food poisoning and it was absolutely horrible, but not as bad as dysentery, I was only vomiting and diarrhea atst for a day and it took me and my ex almost two weeks to be able to do anything and I’m just grateful our eldest son didn’t eat any of what we ate 😢 note to self, if there’s a grocery strike going on, don’t go to the affected stores and buy discounted meat 😮
A body building friend of mine went to India to visit his relatives (usually UK). Caught amoebic dysentery while he was there and lost 15kgs. It took him 2 years to put the weight back on.
I always wondered what the bloody flux was! Thanks for the delightfully gross explanation! I have more questions now. Also, new fear unlocked with the 'falling down' issue.
There was no modern medicine in the'modern' time 16th to 18th centuries. Just the medicine of Classical Greece and Rome. Medicine passed into the medieval period rather late in about the 1860's.

And how did Pirates wash their hands? Wipe their bums after going to toilet by pooping over the side of the ship or the buckets of waste? The drinking water on ships would have to last weeks or months and was usually filthy after a week or two. But what else was there to drink that was not contaminated.

Bad diet can cause trouble. Oh, you don’t *need* to have dysentery, either. If you have, say - Chronic Pancreatitis - then eating the wrong food can cause long and frequent stays in the bathroom with projectile diarrhea.

Drinking beer would have been much safer than drinking water, due to the brewing process. During the cholera outbreak in 19th century, it was found that publicans and brewery workers escaped the horror of cholera.
This from an era when the average human life expectancy was nearly half what it is today. People can and did live to be quite old back then, from living a clean lifestyle.

Sounds like what happens on modern cruise ships...
@heronimousbrapson863, it does . . . but what happens on cruise ships is virtually always norovirus, which spreads like wildfire. Blech.
A bout of norovirus on a cruise ship 🚢 can’t be compared with a bout of cholera on a 16th century privateer vessel.
I love that the thumbnail for deadly diarrhea is trudeau.😂😂😂

Dysentery is still fatal if you're on your way to Oregon!
or if you even live in Oregon.
