This is the kick serve of pickleball!
Try stepping four or 5 feet back from the service line while serving, you will be able to hit much harder with top spin allowing even more height. This also gives the ball greater spin speed off the bounce.
Completely agree! Wish I would have covered this in the video. Want to be my video writer? lol
+Learned that a while ago. Many opponents just don't know what to do with a rocket coming in high that then drops and runs when it hits the court. I have had players refuse to play doubles with me because they want to play against and learn how to defend my serve. Love this video.
Saw this unusual serve style the first time I watched QD play. Thanks for breaking it down so I could see it better.
No problem! Happy to break it down. It’s an awesome tool to have
It just looks like the modern tennis forehand. QD was an experienced junior tennis player.
I have seen quite a few vids on creating topspin but yours gets into the nitty gritty unlike others! The grip and paddle motion instructions are very clear! Just wish I could afford that Titan!
Glad it was helpful! I really appreciate this. And if you change your if to a how you will be able to afford a Titan. "If I had enough money I would buy a Titan." "How can I get enough money to buy a Titan?" Its all a mindset, and you'll figure out a way to make it happen!
Honestly it's not how i do it. With his serve as he described in the videos i will eat that ball alive with my return.
@@avatar_ball_bender Can you make a video to show us how you actually serve? I've been following you for a while now and super happy you are getting more attention as you deserve it! Your a great player!!!
This is a 6 minute video of him serving...What do you mean "actually" serve? Slow the video down and watch what he does....
concise and easy to understand language. Love the pull the rope and wear your elbow on your nose ideas, it's mnemonics that this that actually help my learning type. I watch a lot of picklball videos but this is the 1st one I've given an auto like and subscibe to
Glad you liked it! I really appreciate it
Can't wait to try this style of serve. I'm pretty ok with my serves and I'd say 90% goes in but I always go long rather than short. Practice practice practice is the key and I can't wait. Wish I can play lots and often but you know, I'm a mom, working, and life. Thanks for his video
You’ll love it! It’s all about correct form and getting reps in. Better to be busy than bored 🙌🙌🙌 keep it up
Very good video and well explained. Can’t wait to try it
I was putting mass spin on my serves, but the other day, I noticed they always landed right in the opponents wheelhouse, making it pretty easy for a decent player to return....I'm gonna work on this serve today cuz it makes alot of sense. Thanks
Good stuff!!
Really amazing serve and tutorial. Practiced for days and got to use it against these a holes and it worked like a charm 😃. Thanks for the video.
Also Quang Duong pronounced...The qu is pronounced like gu in guacamole and the du is like y sound, so it's yoong. Like young but with an oo like a ghost booo sound in the middle instead.
Great to hear! Glad you beat the a holes lol
Aloha Austin. It would be great if you had a video clip showing your serve motion from the side so we could see your swing path and your contact point.
Dm me on insta and I’ll share the video with you 🙌
I sent you the DM on Instagram
This is Next Gen tennis forehand technique
Exactly! These guys have elbows of steel
Truth!
I tried this serve and was much more consistent than my normal serves. I like the big bend and hope to add more power as I get more comfortable. Good stuff.
Great to hear!
My forehand in tennis was my best shot and in pickle ball this is like breathing for me 😂
Exactly!
Thanks for great video!, i remember asking to do QD's serve technic, I've been drilling this serve after watching your video and my serve is getting nasty topsin
Glad I could help! You’re who I got the idea from! I appreciate you letting me know what you want to learn
Avatar and Airbender serve, LMAO.
Haha for real!
Fire video! Make a video on some Quang duong ground strokes, since his drives look insane
Okay! it is essentailly the same thing but ill make a video at some point!
Love this serve to add to my list!
Hope you enjoy it!
To everyone who has a strong tennis background knows what he's talking about instantly lol 🤣🤣🤣
Exactly!
Love the video - very clear explanation. I've got to work more on that whip element.
...
Future enhancement: Talk about Speed and Acceleration instead of POWER.
Most pickleball coaches talk about generating power when they mean either speed or explosiveness (acceleration). But in exercise physiology, they are very different things. Even wimpy (un-p bowerful) 10 year-olds can generate speed with the whip you're teaching. The whip is acceleration (explosiveness) to get speed (not power). Just like world's strongest man is not SPEEDY, and elite sprinters are not POWERFUL. They really are very different concepts.
Notes! Thank you
I believe you can get the same paddle angle and motion without a grip change by rotating your wrist more.
Your wrist can only go so far. But try it 👍
@@pickleballplaybook A 3 minute video to tell me to change my grip by one flat on the handle!!?? get a life
I use an extreme western grip. Feels the most natural to me.
Bc you know how to contact the balls. Most guys just think bc other oldies use it then copy but in fact it's a better grip than continental. I love playing against continental bc i know the ball would come up or inconsistent
Wow. What’s extreme western. Is that another name for full western? If so, you must have an elbow of steel 🤣
A western grip is already an extreme grip. After that you're back in Continental (aka Hawaiian grip) but hitting with the opposite side of the paddle. Not recommended. Full western is as far as you want to go.
Title should read “3.5 Player Discovers Topspin”
🤣 3.5 “at best”
3.5 forever!
How about just backing up behind the line? That would also allow you to get some more height while keeping the ball in.
Definitely a good move!
That is an idea, but the downside is that your opponent has more time to react (assuming similar shot speeds). Everything has pros and cons though so definitely worth considering.
Good description 👍
Thanks 😁
Long story short, go from Continental to western grip. Got it.
Yes, assuming you know how to hit a forehand 👍
The easiest way to find the semi-western grip is lay your paddle on the ground and pick it up without rotating it.
That is definitely true! I used to do that but found people would have slightly varying grips, so I like to teach this way so no one can possibly be in the wrong grip 🙌
need to explain this for lefties too. Not same bevel is it?
Just think about it as a mirror image rather than putting yourself in my shoes. Its the same bevel but opposite side 👍
i wonder if you got the highest spin paddle on the market, and perfected this technique i wonder what the greatest combination of speed and height would be. physics would dictate it, it is calculable. I just want to know. I am gonna ask Chat GPT one second...
it was pretty crazy, it made this whole python code and ran all these simulations - i don't think it is right though haha, this is what it came up with:
*Optimal Serve Parameters:*
Based on the simulation results, the optimal parameters for your pickleball serve are:
*Initial Speed:* 10.7 m/s (approximately 23.94 mph)
*Launch Angle:* 10 degrees
*Initial Height:* 1 meter (waist height)
*Top Spin:* 2141 RPM
*Height at Highest Point:* 62 inches (so less than 2 nets)
*Ball Speed when it hits the ground:* 22.48mph
*Ball Spin when it hits the ground:* 2141 RPM
These parameters should allow you to achieve a serve that is fast, high, and lands at the desired distance with maximum top spin.
What do you think? does that sound right? to me it sounds like a very slow serve that doesn't even go that high above the net? dang - we need to get these Ai models out on the courts ASAP
That actually sounds right haha! Cause a net length above the net will get it deep enough. Not too sure on the speed though. I feel like you could aim lower and hit harder and get the same result. Pretty cool it can do that though!
love it
❤️🙌
Is this serve noticeably harder to return? Looks interesting, I might try it, but that grip will feel weird.
It’s noticeably harder because it kicks hard when it lands!
You won't hit aces using it. However, it pushes the returner back and usually their return ends up short in the court which makes the third shot drive or drop easier to execute. Great combo to use this with a third shot drive.
Good video. Remember to change your grip back after the serve. QD hits everything semi western grip. 😮
Yeah haha otherwise you’re going to be hitting the ground if they return to your forehand and the sky if they return to your backhand 🤣
A SW grip also works well for flat and topspin drops, aggressive FH topspin dinks, speedups and two-handed resets from the middle of the body. Counters, slice dinks and one-handed backhand flicks are better using a continental grip. It's usually best to stay in continental grip once at the the kitchen as the action up there is too quick to be changing grips. Ready position at the kitchen should always be continental, IMO. If you do switch to SW for a speedup or TS dink get back in continental quickly for the potential counter to your speedup.
@@pickleballplaybookmaybe a little of topic but it’s worth noting that a big advantage to quickly switching grips from continental to a stronger forehand grip at the kitchen (stronger than continental) is you are not nearly as vulnerable to getting chicken-winged .
If the secret is a normal tennis forehand grip - pickle ball has a ways to go.
The secret?
Nice!
Very!🙌👍
Hmm Federer, one of the great forehands of all time used an eastern forehand. Some say he used a semi western but they are wrong. Look at slow motion Federer forehands on UA-cam and he holds an Eastern.
Federer definitely uses eastern. More of a flat power. nadal is semi western
Gee.. when i play junior tennis we call it's a Federer forehand syndrome. Attack that forehand all day. Nicholas Godsick was an example. Couldn't hit a forehand to save his life. Tennis techniques have move on 20 years
So the semi western is just further right from the eastern grip?
Exactly 👍 then further than that is the full western forehand/eastern backhand
@@pickleballplaybook I think the Bevel numbers are normally with the paddle face vertical. So your Bevel 2 with paddle face horizontal is Bevel 4 with the paddle face vertical (Semi Western).
Correct 👍 doesn’t matter how you number them so long as you get what bevel to put your index knuckle and bottom of palm
@@pickleballplaybook Mahalo Austin for the quick reply. How long did it take you to get competent serving this way? Also, do you consciously try to drop the head of the paddle down during your backswing when you rotate the paddle back and right before you brush up on the ball?
I tried it out yesterday and it was hit or miss. Some serves were great and some went into the bottom of the net.
Quong did not invent this serve. That said, he's probably my favorite player.
No one knows who invented it, but he definitely popularized it 🙌
Tennis basics dressed up and renamed.
Welcome to pickleball 🙌🙌
So basically a tennis forehand.
A PB serve is basically a FH stroke that you set up and don’t have to move to - so yes it’s akin to a tennis FH though video doesn’t mention weight loading, hip rotation or follow through.
Except no string bed so you have to have quite a bit more of an open paddle and youd definitely get smoked the first time you play cause it’s so different! I just know that cause I was once as confident as you when I first started haha
I mean in reality the important thing is to just get the serve in because 99% of the time your opponent is gonna return it anyways its all about the 3rd shot drop or how well you play at the kitchen if you wanna be good in pickel ball
Good point. But if you can get this consistent, your opponents are going to miss a lot more returns. Trust me, it’s a weapon and a half!!
@@pickleballplaybook I'm not disagreeing I use dif types of serves just to mix it up but rarely if your playing other good players do you score on a serve but it could lead to you having a much easier 3rd
You don’t score often with a good serve. But quite often with a great serve! Keep practicing 🐐🐐🐐
Not bad but it's only 50% close. I would do it if titan send me a free ball machine. I need one. My Dad will kill me bc I give his trade secrets away but that ball machine is cool
Yeah I’d be interested to see what I am doing wrong 👍 I’ll put in a good word with Titan!
Why is a high serve harder to return than a low one?
Strike zone. A higher strike zone is much more difficult 👍
You did a really good job of breaking down the serving motion but the grip part was unclear for me. I would have liked to see a closeup of exactly how the paddle is gripped, both open palm before its closed and after the palm and fingers are closed. Probably because I'm a beginner but you should make sure that what you are presenting is clear to multiple skill levels.
What’s your question on the grip? Would love to help 👍
Exactly how does the paddle sit in your hand? The confusing part to me was aligning the 2nd bevel with that line on you palm. I'm having trouble translating that to the physical. Exactly where does that bevel sit? My grip is the eastern so it would seem that a modified western grip entails rotating the paddle slightly counterclockwise bringing bevel 2 facing upwards a bit. When I do that the paddle is facing the way you show it at about the 1:58 mark. I'm probably over thinking this. Really appreciate the reply.
Gotcha. If you hold your paddle flat there will be 8 sides to the bevels. Go to the second of the 8. Think about a stop sign. 🛑 it’d be the one that is the top right corner. Does that help?
@@pickleballplaybook Got it. Thanks a lot for your time and patience,
Happy to help! I know you’d do the same for me
Can you show this serving on the right side
Yes!
When do you switch your grip back to pure Continental?
This is the biggest mistake that pickleball players made
Hello Quang, if you have the time of day please elaborate a bit more on what you mean. I’m assuming the original commenter is talking about switching back to continental/eastern (your original grip) after the serve is completed. What is it that you are suggesting?
I never do. I actually hold eastern full time directly after hitting the serve! Does that help?
How would you return against this? Also side note, what shoes are those? Lol
The Montis drop 1.0! They’re linked in the description 🙌
I have a Titan Ball machine and I echo his sentiments?
💯❤️
Are you unsure?
I thought I invented that serve.
🔥🔥🔥🙌
I'm at the age when I bend I make air.
Hahah this is great 😂
lol. tennis players have been hitting like this for years. they call it a forehand
Welcome to pickleball 🙌🙌
At 1:17.. the serve was not higher at all!
👀
why say "barely beat Ben Johns?" he beat him!
Haha cause he barely beat him. That’s impressive!
I see no difference in the height between the serves.
Interesting. Even when they’re marked in the beginning of the video? Haha
Too many people will struggle with the semi western grip. I am a 50 + men's pro player and have one of the hardest topspin serves out there. I use an Eastern grip and get tons of topspin. Having people use a semi western is not wise in my opinion. People will hurt their arms most likely.
Thanks Bart!
@bart1476 Do you also use the Eastern grip for your forehand shots?
Around 90% of tennis players these days use a semi-western grip (a small fraction use Eastern or full Western) to hit a forehand. But with PB it will lead to “hurt arms most likely.” Why?
Yes, @@MikeYoneda
@@frankfurter7260Jack Sock has a western forehand in tennis so why does he use an eastern forehand for Pickleball ground strokes and continental in the kitchen??? Because Pickleball paddles don't hold the ball on the face of the paddle nearly as long as polyester tennis strings do.
I thought putting any spin on the serve is illegal
It’s spinning the ball prior to serving that’s illegal 👍
Prior to the serve your just standing there not playing 😂@pickleballplaybook
So the your hand. Thats prior to the serve. Cause it’s prior to contact
Not even close to pronouncing Quang's name right.
I’d like to see you do better ;)
@@pickleballplaybook I actually though it was pronounced like you said it, but on KOTC last week Jimmy said how it's pronounced.
Please tell me you didn't credit someone with inventing a high topspin drop. That's ridiculous. I've been hitting serves like this for about 6 months now.
It's a high serve. With lots of top spin.
Honestly, I didn't think I'd be getting tired of the pickleball community but here we are.
Is it the money? Taking advantage of old folks?
I honestly don't even know wtf is going on any more.
But everyone knows who Quang is. Quangs been doing this for 1.5 years now btw. It’s like saying Morgan Evans didn’t invent the spin serve. Sure there was probably a handful of people before him that did it but he was the first that was on the pro tour.
@@pickleballplaybook Do you realize you just gave an overview of inventions and generally how the entire patent system plays out? The person who invents stuff rarely gets the full credit.
What I've realized is that it's not a big deal as long as SOMEONE takes credit. Because no matter who takes credit, it's still promoting the sport of pickleball. If this video wasn't in the general flow of elevating pickleball as a sport I'd have a problem with it.
Be good, happy dinking!
You’re right. Billy bob invented this serve. But no one knows who he is 👍 haha I still don’t understand what you’re saying
That's just the Jimmy Arias tennis grip that Bolletteiri ruined generations of tennis with. The problem with that grip is you can't hit anything besides topspin with it and it screws your backhand. With this size paddle or racket, similar to 80's racquetball, you are completely F'd in close quarters with that grip. In sports like this or Padel Tenns, half your strokes are half strokes or less, or should be, so you don't have time to manipulate the face around with the upside down topspin grip. So unless you are changing grips constantly, which is stupid in this game, this grip is remarkably stupid for just the serve. Unless you already use it for tennis and used to it, this is NOT something people should get into. It's not that complicated to serve. Just UA-cam video content.
Use it if you want spin but I don’t recommend staying in the grip for every shot unless you have already done this in tennis. Insane rpms when you do it right 🙌
This was a waste of 5 minutes to basically say "this is a tennis forehand used as a serve for pickleball"
❤️❤️❤️
Not every pickleball player comes from tennis, genius 🙄
Dang, wish I read this comment before I watched the video because now I wasted 5 minutes watching it and 5 minutes thinking of something cool to say to a cool tennis dude who now plays pickleball.
If it’s a good serve why was it a waste? If it works why not use it
It’s gotta suck being a tennis player. All the cool kids leaving your snooty clubs, your free courts being converted because no one had used them in over a decade, and now all you can do is troll the comments on a pickleball vid because you can’t find a partner to play with.
Don’t believe any one person invented a serve. Heck I’ve been hitting the line with much power and height for much of my 3 month pickleball play. I thought height was bad but maybe I should not try and get it lower. I realize you should have multiple different serves when you play.
🙌🙌🙌
Right but I was literally the only one started ripping spin serve when I went on tour. Pros just made the serve in. People kept talking about my grips but now they start copying it
This guy doesn't even know how to teach bevels correctly. Bevel 1 is the top bevel when you hold the paddle perpendicular with the ground. Semi-western is putting your index knuckle on bevel 4.
Nice dude!
