UPDATE! Chances increasing for Major winter storm right before Christmas

- A major winter storm is expected to develop in the days leading up to Christmas. Behind the storm a massive chunk of Arctic air will plunge into the lower 48 giving some the coldest air they have felt in years. Travel could be significantly impacted for the holiday.
The highest impacts when it comes to the snow will be in the Great Lakes Region and Midwest.
Some places, especially along and around the Great Lakes could pick up more than a foot. Areas in parts of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin could see near-blizzard conditions as the storm gets stronger Thursday night into Friday.
Things quiet down for Christmas Eve, but the chill settles in all the way down to Florida. Miami could fall into the 30s and Orlando could dip below freezing.
The only place to escape the Arctic chill is the Desert Southwest and Southern California. Or The Caribbean :)

I live in Michigan, and have lived in Michigan for my entire life. To those of you travelling up from the southern part of the country that normally doesn't have snow or cold weather by car, here's tips to stay safe in the northern states during winter:
1. Keep an ice scraper for your windshield in your car
2. Wear appropriate winter clothes and shoes (snow boots, a heavy winter coat or parka with a drawstring hood, long pants, socks, thick water resistant gloves, snow pants if you can get your hands on them, a scarf, and a beanie or thick headband to keep your ears warm. Padded earmuffs are also a good idea).
3. When coming to a stop, don't slam on the breaks, or you will spin out, causing a potentially fatal accident, let off the gas and gently pump the brakes. If you stop short of the intersection or stop sign, idle up to it with your foot over the brake, or slightly press on the gas if you're really far back, then pump the brakes. Try to stay under 5 mph if you're really far back.
4. Keep a snow shovel in the trunk incase you end up being stuck in a snowbank.
5. Have your cell phone above 50% charge at all times incase you need to call for a tow truck.
6. Don't abandon your vehicle in search of help if your don't have the correct outdoor clothing or if the snow is blowing, you can end up getting lost and freeze to death.
7. Make sure your tires have been changed recently. Good traction on icy roads can save your life.
8. Have non-perishable food and bottled water incase you get stranded.
9. Don't drive your car if it's prone to malfunctions while driving or if it's really old.
10. Emergency flares are life savers, so keep a flare gun on hand in the event that your cellphone doesn't work.
11. Turn your hazard lights on if you have to pull over for any reason.
12. Keep blankets in your car if you have to wait for help
13. Conserve as much of your phone and car batteries as possible.
14. Make sure your anti-freeze/coolant is topped up.

I live in Northeast Georgia. A warning for people living in the south. When the continued temp drops below freezing, open a faucet in one of your sinks. Open it enough to have a slow flow. This will keep your pipes from bursting. And it would help if your water pipes are insulated.

I'm old enough to remember the Blizzard of January, 1978 in Ohio. It was so devastating that I have hoped we would never see another storm even close to it. I have heard that this storm could be almost as bad -- and I fear for the safety of my family if we have power outages with the bitter cold.. Do you believe it will be that severe?
I don’t think there will be as much snow, but this storm is going to deepen quickly which will really crank up the winds. Could get close to Blizzard conditions. - Jonathan
This system won't even be close to the January 26, 1978 event. And the pattern and location of the key pieces are much different (less favorable for snow) this week.
I'm from Ohio and I to remember that storm. I still have family there,so it's good to know what they have coming. We here in new Mexico don't get much snow,and sometimes I do,miss it. We do get the cold though.

This would be a great time to add be sure you take some extra stuff in your car because if you get stuck somewhere you're going to need to be wrapped in blankets to stay warm.

This weather report is 'very' helpful! I am originally from Michigan, but I have lived in the southeast for ten+ years. My body is no longer accustomed to this type of cold or snow -- so no holiday family visits this year.

It's good to get this Nationwide report where you can see the whole system and kind of figure out what's going to happen to you no matter what. I'm in Nebraska and sometimes the jet stream is very kind to us and miss everything misses my house by 40 miles and it's warm here and cold there sometimes it's cold all the way to the Rocky mountains and there ain't no hope this is one of those times coming up

We had the 2020 'Ice Capades' here in Texas. On our 400 acre ranch we lost half our deer, no livestock, no power for a month. The night of the greatest ice, I stood on the porch and timed it, one really big limb or small tree every one minute. It was devastating. It's happened before and will happen again. I'm thankful this is coming fast because what killed us was the slow moving cold with rain then freezing rain then snow, sleet then freezing rain. I'll takes 'screaming' over 'mosey' any day.

Well, this storm did a head fake on everyone. Texas isn't getting that 138 year subarctic ice storm for 4 days this time.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, where it's going to start getting cold on Monday...my daughter lives in Orlando and said she missed the cold, so even though she's no longer used to the cold, (she's lived there for 5 years already) she's looking forward happily to the cold! 😆 Stay safe out there though. I’m in Saginaw MI (right by the tip of the thumb) and the snow always misses us here! Hits us just to the west and east, but never gives us much, relative to the rest of the state.

We have here 52°F now and this will not change so fast. Next week it will be a bit warmer and at Saturday it is sunny, so I will try my last sunbath for this year to increase my vitamin D level.⛱

Has there ever been a calculation of how much water, falling in any type of precipitation, is dumped on the US during one of these type storms? Then how much comes from Siberia only, excluding what is picked up on the way?
No matter where you live, plan for devastating cold for a few days. Plan for possible power outages. The cold will be rough on the power grid and the winds can take down power lines in some areas. Have some water prepped because this kind of cold can cause pipes to burst.
I am in NW Montana and I get the best weather forecast for my area from Florida, go figure. -21 tonight with winds. We are -5 with 15 mph winds today so much colder that -5. Have safe and blessed Christmas and lets all be praying for those that are not so prepared in the deeper south.
I live in the Panhandle of Texas and we always get the north wind in winter. We can go from 75* to 17 * in a few hours. Or go from 17 * one day to 77 * the next. We just prepare no matter what.

Knowing where I live in SE Michigan, the snow will completely miss me and my cousin over in the next county gets 10+ inches of snow. It happened to me last year
Last year, my town got .5 inches of snow and 30 miles north, she got 10.5 inches

I've lived in the New Center area of Detroit for almost 16 years and I think you already know it's not uncommon for us to get 10" to 12" of snow from a storm system. If we miss this one, we're going to be extremely lucky.
All that system has to do is expand to the south just 30 miles or so and tennessee can actually get a measurable snow ..our local forcast is all over the place , in the beginning they were calling for 6 inches for my town winchester tn then they said no snow at all ,now they are saying 3 inches ..this must be a tough one to forcast ..
I hope we do get a freeze in Orlando. We need it to kill weeds and fleas. Haven’t had a freeze here in several years.

When i went to warm up my car on break at work on thursday this week (minnesota) at 11pm it was -40 windchill... the cold wasn't the issue but the wind was terrible.
On Christmas Eve I know some fans here going to the saints game vs the Cleveland browns,how much snow will be in Cleveland Saturday at noon,I thought about going ,I live in new Orleans,but I said nah I'm good

You may not have but I live in Jacksonville Florida and I have been praying for a cold front that we have not had in so many years. My dog is allergic to every damn thing outside and this will kill that stuff.
