In case anyone was wondering, thermal explosions happen when water under the earth instantly turns into steam and therefore it expands creating a thermal explosion. It is like when you accidentally superheat water in your microwave... Just on a much bigger scale and with more rocks. As stated in other comments, thermal explosions are fairly common in Yellowstone and are not an indication of an eruption of the volcano. There is a possibility of the volcano erupting in our lifetime, but thermal explosions are not an indicator of that happening. Another misconception is that the volcano is inside of Yellowstone. The truth is that Yellowstone is the volcano the caldera (which is kind of like th inside of the edges) is inside of the park. So, if the supervolcano does erupt, the whole park is gonna be gone, not just part of it. Hopefully that clears some things up for y'all.
Couple of things: First your zones depicted are well off mark in terms of understatement. Main blast debris would rain down on about 90% of what you' shown as ash zone 1. Zone 1 would cover the west coast & likely reach into the Gulf. Zone 2 would cover the entirety of the US, roughly 75% of Mexico & most of Canada. There would be in addition a GLOBAL "zone 3" ash deposit. This is a CALDERA, not Mt St Helens or Rainier we're talking about. Second, "ejection of rocks, mud, and boiling water" is a textbook example of volcanic activity. Maybe rework the vid description.

I mean, yeah, but also, kinda not. These kinds of explosive events often occur when a previously open tunnel for water and stream collapses and "clogs the pipe." Park Rangers probably noticed a few geyser and bubble pits slowed down or stopped completely, which would've been the first sign that something like this was about to happen. But as far as knowing when and where these explosions are going to happen, it is WAY harder to figure out.
