They're mad because Wardaddy, who has been the most violent person throughout the film, was having a clean, peaceful dinner without inviting his crew. After spending the war killing.

Now having watched all the deleted scenes, it makes sense why wardaddy only invited Norman to have the meal. It was because Norman has the same name and resembled his brother, who he had killed because of his drunk driving. In the car was also his girlfriend Rose, who he loved, and I assume the girl having the meal with them reminded him of Rose. So Wardaddy just wanted a meal with his family that he killed I assume.

Probably one of the best descriptions of the Falaise Pocket that I've ever heard. The German Seventh Army and Fifth Panzer Army got cut off and trapped south of the Sein River during their retreat from Normandy. It was said that in the battle's final days, millions of flies were drawn by the mountains of corpses, becoming so thick that from a distance they resembled clouds of smoke hanging low over the entire valley.

Apparently the scene left a real impact on the actors, the tensions weren't entirely acting and were, in part, real emotions. Even the director was questioning if he had taken things too far. The following day they filmed this scene they said there was a weird apology amongst the actors, but no one could look each other in the eyes.

  • @Farrell461

Honestly the movie version is better. It shows that he has emotion equivalent to the outburst in this version, but also showing how much of a emotionless husk the war had turned him into. You get the same emotion, but it’s even more heartbreaking because you know that if someone like him showed even a little emotion, it was a truly traumatic experience

    • @MrAJ1109
      @MrAJ1109 4 роки тому +40

it seems we're in the minority here, but I think I agree. In the final cut, he tells the story a lot more slowly, which I think adds a little suspense. All of them try to appear as emotionless husks, struggling to deal with the heartbreak inside.

I always saw the movie like from Norman perspective, he just arrived, he is just the groups new guy, he doesn't even want to kill, BUT this group go WAAAAY together, he doesn't know the stories of this group, their suffering or anything they have been through, and in this way the movie works very well, so from my point of view, the deleted scenes work as an "Add-On", like: "Oh that's why Don takes care of Norman, Grady is the way he is because he has a crisis, so he plays the tough guy" and so on...

@@trje246 Idk I think the slaughter house scene helps push the idea that Gordo has probably been killing the longest out of the entire group and he's finally starting to break down about it. I prefer theversion they use in the original cut, it does a better job of showing how utterly broken and desensitized they all were by that point. The original just has Michael Pena so desensitized by it all he doesn't have the emotion left in him to get all energized and livid like in this scene, he just speaks in a broken, quiet tone still stuck trying to comprehend the magnitude of the insanity they all saw. It portrays the state they're all in way better in my opinion.
By that point you would've cried and raged about it so much that you don't have it in you anymore, yet you still try to understand, going over it, again and again.

Yeah here the difference of this scene: One showed in the movie Gordo is in a state of being drunk and emotionless like he's used to it. Basically not convincing seeing you can't feel the pain of his when he's explaining it. In the deleted one is more convincing of himself drunk and emotional you can see him wanting to express how he felt crying at the same time. Lets his pain and express how he grieves while the others remember and cry silently

Despite whatever technical complaints people have with this movie it seems to do an unusually good job of bringing home some of the scars of war. The interesting thing is that it comes from events you never would have imagined. I am given to wonder if something so obscure, so seemingly unreal, comes from reality as it seems too unimaginable to be just an idea whipped in the fertile mind of a writer.

  • @orcanimal

Michael Pena is fantastic, but the take they ended up using, where he delivers the story in a much more dethatched, subdued way is so much better, like he truly feels disconnected from it, yet as he starts talking you see him starting to struggle with emotion. It's so much more haunting because it, especially compared to this take, where he's much more animated and emotional. The true horror is conveyed in the original take, where he truly feels like a changed man because of their ordeal.

I somewhat feel on a level like this. When I got to my unit in 2011 I had to wait for them to return from deployment. About a month and a half later they get home I am told that I was a last minute replacement for a rifleman that was killed 2 weeks before I was given duty station orders. I wasn't supposed to be told that, and the C-CO and 1st Sergeant were pissed the fuck off. I went to the Squad Leaders house for dinner one night with the entire Squad. It was extremely awkward trying to fit in and bond with soldiers who seen me as nothing but a replacement for someones shoes I couldn't fill. We finally deployed and I proved effective until I got injured and sent home. We were able to bond on that deployment to a degree to where I earned their respect enough to prove I'd die for them. They all told me they'd rather have me injured than die like the one before me and that they were glad I was there to help them in those first few weeks. I didn't even make it a full 2 months into my deployment.
Shits rough. Real rough when you're hearing stories of how the dude before you died. Hearing stories of sheer panic. Hearing stories with cracking voices due to holding back tears. And it sucks even more because I couldn't make it farther than several weeks without being totally wiped from the field by an RPG. Shit's going to fuck with me until I die, but I guess that's how life is . . . not fair.

This is a nod to All Quiet on the Western Front.
A bunch of horses get loose while they are on patrol and because the scared wounded horses were crying so loud they were afraid the French would pick up their position. So they start screaming to shoot the horses, only to be stopped by their squad leader. Afterwards Paul (I think it's been a while) goes on to say how wrong it is to shoot horses cause they didn't do anything wrong. I get it's a WW1 novel, but the theme seems to be the same.

For those who are asking why did the young German SS let Norman go. here's the answer.
He decides not to his officer know that Norman is alive because the war is going to end very soon and Germany will lose. Who knows, he might be captured at some point and at that time he needs help from an American or British.

While Pena's acting is great here, I like the souless monologue of the release version. It's more likely how someone with PTSD would say. Like it's nothing, but he's actually traumatized for life.
