- The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad excursion is the main reason to come to Skagway for the ultimate Alaskan adventure.
The White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad is a historic narrow-gauge railway that was built during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 19th century.
The Klondike Gold Rush began when gold was discovered in Bonanza Creek in the Yukon Territory of Canada in 1896. This discovery sparked a frenzied rush of prospectors and fortune seekers to the Klondike region. Most of these prospectors arrived in the area through the ports of Skagway, Alaska, and Dyea, Alaska.
Skagway, located on the coast of Alaska, was the gateway to the Klondike goldfields. However, the route from Skagway to the goldfields involved a treacherous and challenging trek over the Chilkoot Pass or White Pass, which was a formidable obstacle for prospectors carrying their supplies. Recognizing the need for a more efficient transportation route, entrepreneurs and investors proposed the construction of a railway.
In 1898, construction of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad began in Skagway. The builders faced extreme challenges, including steep terrain, rugged landscapes, and harsh weather conditions. Despite these challenges, they successfully completed the railway in just over two years.
The WP&YR Railroad was completed in July 1900. It was a narrow-gauge railway, using a 3-foot (914mm) track gauge, and it extended from Skagway, Alaska, over the White Pass into British Columbia, Canada, and then to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The railway was instrumental in transporting people, supplies, and equipment to the goldfields and bringing gold ore back for processing.
The White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad is an important part of the history of the Klondike Gold Rush and a significant transportation and tourism legacy in the region, offering visitors a chance to relive the history of the gold rush and appreciate the stunning natural beauty of the area.
Visting Skagway while cruising the HAL Koningsdam was a great experience. The history of the area is shown throughout the town in memorials, museums, displays, restaurants and other local shops that showcase the artistry of the indigenous peoples.

Thanks for the great comments! Yes in our last stop I don't book any excursion because I just want to enjoy the town. My favorite spot is Glacier Bay next week. We do a tour in Ketchikan you may find interesting that's why we didn't do one on Skagway. They have many good deals out of Vancouver I bet you would film Alaska amazingly. We will go again probably watch for a really good off season deal and just do it! Thank you again for the support glad we have sorta met you! LOL!

Cruise ships drop anchor at three deep-water docks-the Broadway, Railroad, and Ore docks-all within easy walking distance of Skagway's historic downtown. A small ferry dock just outside of town sometimes serves smaller vessels.

What a beautiful train ride! I’m definitely interested in the thermal suite! And we felt the same way about the kid thing on our cruise- we love kids - just didn’t want to vacation with them. Lol.
The train ride was great even Ron liked it and he wants nothing to do with trains on vacation. The thermal suite was brilliant and we will do it every time!!! We don't like vacationing with other peoples kids! LOL! Thx for watching!
We didn’t take the train when we were in Skagway; even though our campground was right next to the depot. Would love to do that sometime. Love the downtown and seeing it all again.

You guys did an amazing job hitting all the highlights. It's interesting to see the difference of your trip versus ours just a few weeks. Most things in skagway were closed by the time our ship arrived. The season nearly over. I overheard that the current sailing of this week is the last for the year.
Wow interesting I was wondering about that. We will go again for sure . We have seen many videos and it is different every month sometimes more wildlife and sometimes more snow or rain. We are going to watch and maybe do an off season special again sometime and see the difference that's how much we really did enjoy it! My favorite was Glacier Bay that will be next week and then I thought Ketchikan was a cute town. Looking forward to watching your experience. We are thinking Florida next year! Let's stay in touch!
@@justramblinaround we knew that going the last week of the shoulder season was a bit of a gamble as far as what would be open. However the cost savings is what made it available to happen this year. Otherwise we would have had to put it off for another time. So I'm really happy that we went and got to see what we did. Will definitely have to do a separate trip in the future. I would love to take the train all the way to Fairbanks. Absolutely must stay in touch.
Oh yes we do many off season things less people and less money. We will be watching and probably since we are driving distance we may very well do another Alaska Cruise off season. In the next year or two will be worth it! Yes Fairbanks would be amazing!!

@justramblinaround did you guys do any messages? or just the thermal suite? I don't like any of the times currently offered for reservations, is it hard to make message appointments on the ship?
We didn't do massages which I love doing on vacation but several people and videos said not to they said they aren't very good on a cruise but I almost changed my mind. I know they were offering them and pushing them at a discount once on board and if you get a different service like a thermal suite they take you for a tour and offer you a discount/ upgrade for a massage so I really don't think they are possibly booked before you get on. We actually scheduled our tour the day we arrive but then went about an hour after we boarded and asked if we can't just get it done and they gave us the tour. I like getting it all out of the way right away. We did like the thermal suite because the pool and hot tubs outside were always busy and sorta noisy even though it's not so much a kiddie family ship always a few then many adults were always in the hot tubs. In the thermal suite we usually only had a couple people many times we were alone. Hope this helps let me know.

We are looking forward to just relaxing on the cruise, it will be our 15 wedding anniversary and we are leaving 5 kids with my parents. So our cruise goals on ship is just to relax.
You deserve it!! You will be very happy you did the thermal suite the pools and hot tubs outside were always busy and when we vacation especially anniversaries we really don't want kids around. Even though I was a preschool teacher then a youth sports director and coached our kids in every sport and volunteered at the schools. We liked having grown up time on vacation and the thermal suite was a great escape and a wonderful decision!! Happy 15th please let us know how it goes. We have 2 to 3 more Alaska Cruise videos left to help and feel free to message us. We will be cruising again next year so I was able to make it enjoyable for Ron.😊
Do you recommend purchasing this train tour on your own. I see it’s much cheaper if you do it yourself.
We booked through our cruise cause we received a 100 credit per excursion package so it came out better but many times it can be cheaper going through the railroad not sure if I would take the chance and book day of cause they do fill up depending on how many cruise ships in and if you want an exact time. They do have 2 different trains so you want to see what matters to you. We booked afternoon cause we wanted to enjoy the town in the morning when quieter. Hope that helps.
