My grandmother made the best I've ever had.. Not had it in a long time.. Thanks for this one big time! I never knew how she did it.. Brings back old memories..
The wife used to make this with her grandma growing up in a copper pot. I'm yet to convince her to take a whole day to make a big batch. Love the small batch you made, will try it.
When I was younger (10-16) we used to do this as a festival every year in huge 20 gallon cauldrons. It would take from 8 pm till 6 am of constantly stirring these huge cauldrons on campfires. It is honestly one of my best memories growing up.
I adore this series! This is my third time through it, and it is awesome each time. Understanding that you are a very busy man, especially at this time of year with classes and other videos, I was wondering if there was any chance of you coming back and adding more recipes, I watch anything I can find on your channel, but I especially like the cooking videos. Thank you so very much for all that you do to teach us these vital skills and techniques. So appreciate your teachers, your school, and the products that you put out, but most importantly, I appreciate you for showing this world what a man, and masculinity can look like.
Dave, if you are ever near Burton, Ohio in October. Stop by the Apple Butter festival 1st weekend in October @ Burton Century Village! They make it BIG BATCH style in copper kettles over a wood fire, everything in the kettle at once simmered in apple cider... that store bought stuff don't even come close! and warm apple butter on a slice of fresh Amish made bread? DELISH!!!
Dude, I’m getting fatter just watching your cooking videos! Grew up a Tuscarawas County farm boy. We had a cider press just outside the village where I grew up. Fresh cider and apple butter on toast was just this side of heaven. My Wife still makes a small batch of apple butter for me and cans it. It’s so much better than store bought stuff.
Greatly enjoying this new series. Takes me back to the "journals of the yurt" & "on the waters edge" videos from a decade ago. I wish you'd do another series "on the waters edge" :)
There was a festival I would go to every year, the ladies stirred huge pots over the fire…omg best apple butter ever. Later they switched to propane burners, NOT the same! Still good though!
Hello from the UK Mr Canterbury, never heard of apple butter before. Closest I can think of here is apple sauce and we'd have it with roast pork. Thank you.
Howdy Dave. Noticed you've been doing quite a few food vids lately. 👍 Haven't been able to watch em all yet, tho. My granddad use a big copper kettle to cook his apple butter down in. Of course he started with 10 or 20 pounds of apples, and jarred it up for later. We use a 6 quart slow cooker at our house, covered with a grease spatter screen, so the steam can escape and apple butter can reduce and thicken. It has to cook over night pretty much, but works great. Apple sauce, (no additives) can be used as a starting point if apples are out of season. GFS has #10 cans of it fairly cheap. Good luck in your endeavors.
Dehydrate some apples. Blend or use a spice grinder after they are dry. Add a little water or even better some apple juice and heat up for a while. Done and no worries of burning.
if you put it in the jar while still hot and put lid on. Turn jar upside down on counter and let it naturally cool off. It will seal the lid. Then don't have to put in fridge till you open it
Hey Dave reverse wind you food meal and it will clean and pick up what you were spooning then turn back to the beginning direction no need for the spoon we used to make 75 qts a year at least.
So o o easy and um um good! Thanks Dave you make things look so easy and when you do it they end up being easy. Thanks so much for the video. Keep ye powder dry
Yummy and ol' school. For a big time city slicker from cottonport tn.. just wonder, what some souped up pink lady apple sauce from the piggly wiggly may yield? So no actual butter in it.. hmm, whod thought.. love me some butter. Maybe a butter video cuz. Good stuff as always! Thanks for posting
Big Dave remains the “Iron Chef” o’ Bushcraft.
I don’t know what I enjoy most - the process Dave goes through or him enjoying what he’s made. 👍😋
My grandmother made the best I've ever had.. Not had it in a long time.. Thanks for this one big time! I never knew how she did it.. Brings back old memories..
The underside of your foodmill is where the best apple stuff is. Make sure you scrape that before you are finished with it.
The wife used to make this with her grandma growing up in a copper pot. I'm yet to convince her to take a whole day to make a big batch. Love the small batch you made, will try it.
We used to make and can this. Nothing better. Really enjoyed seeing this outdoor cooking variation! Can't wait to have my grandson try it.

Wow, that takes me back a ways. Haven't used a hand cranked food mill since the 1970s.
my wife makes homemade apple butter, strawberry jam, and grape jelly. Sooo good! 😊

I love this series! all these really great small batch recipes are perfect for single dudes.
Nothing better than apple butter on toast with oatmeal. My parents made that a lot during winter in Massachusetts. Great stuff Dave. Looks awesome!
my great great grandparents would have made this when they lived on a farm 80 to 100 years ago or more
I have always used cinnamon when making apple butter but pumpkin pie spice sounds yummy. Love your videos
Thanks Dave
One of my favorite spreads ever love me some apple butter thanks for sharing Dave and making me hungry lol
If you have a lot of cores and peels left, you can make apple jelly with 'em.
There was a festival I would go to every year, the ladies stirred huge pots over the fire…omg best apple butter ever. Later they switched to propane burners, NOT the same! Still good though!
Appreciate the time you’re taking for these cool videos. They’re fun to watch and try.

Looks good!! Gonna make some this fall over the campfire
My favorite preserve my grandma used to make is apple butter. That's the one thing I have not tried making
Hay when you run your food mill 5 forward 2 backwards help to make it work better. And put some honey & brown sugar in it .
As a kid we always had apple butter but haven't seen it in the store for ages.
I am definitely going to make this!
Thanks Dave! Great video
Gonna have to try this one!
Loving iron chef Dave!!!

Hey Dave reverse wind you food meal and it will clean and pick up what you were spooning then turn back to the beginning direction no need for the spoon we used to make 75 qts a year at least.

Very good 👍.
Looks yummy
Love me some apple butter👍🏻
Have you ever done "bannock", or survival bread?
You think you could do one on some Brunswick Stew? Haven’t had that since Tony made it a few years back at the gathering
Cooking with Canterbury kicks the sh*t out of anything on food network.
The women of the country church I attended as a child cooked apple butter in cauldrons for their fall festival, which they called their country store.
Delicious
Damn that looks good
Daggum I need me some of that.
Great video. What the brand of your sauce pan?
Oh I love ...... apple butter. Do you have to use a certain type of apple?
When i was a kid, the church made it every year, Fresh Apple butter Rules!🚜🪵👍🏼🇺🇸
I might have missed something but where is the butter?
I thought it was decided the name of the kitchen was going to be called outfitters not outdoor?
ol Rufus would've enjoyed those 🍎 cores
👍
Oh hell yea yummy
Kitty!
I had no idea there was no butter in apple butter
Surely, peeling the apples would take less time than cleaning the grinder thing.
That applebutter looks good, zon needs a taste.
👍😃✌️🇺🇸
My great grandmother use to make 500gallons every fall. Good days.
Golly
Looks yummy.
