  • The coronavirus has changed the way we do just about everything, not the least of which is how we fly.
Some people think that flying won't be the same until at least 2023, maybe longer.
So is it safe to fly right now? And has the pandemic changed the way we fly forever?
Start Here buckles in for the future of flight.

Someone I know has been stuck here in Canada for 5 months and has to go back to work in South Asia. He got off-loaded from his flight yesterday because he had a temperature of 99.3 Fahrenheit, whilst lugging around four suitcases in the heat and wearing a thick mask for over an hour straight.
He woke up this morning with a temp of 97.8 F this morning. And has to pay $150 "no-show" fee + $1200 (the minimum difference in fare until at least September).
His cabin was supposed to have only 4 people, including himself.

You know Sandra, no big surprises here. (Good report by the way:) - flying was always close to decline due to the pending threats of government zero carbon initiatives to reduce the foot print. Airlines due to this disease pandemic are forced to:
    1. Invest in greener engines either hybrid or 100% electric and solar connected as an aultinator.
    2. Develop inflight air-conditioning air systems to purify the breathable air and restore confidence for frequent fliers
    3. Get better menus for flight food, period.
    4. Lower costs on consumers and increase the customer care inflight experience
    5. Create medical and quarantine areas within airports to test, customers and pilots by their own staff who would be medically trained and shadowed by the government.
    Just a snap shot -
Sandra, we can indeed discuss this a length over dinner?
Bring your pen and pad. I have ideas light years ahead of today that is so innovate and unique that will blow competitors out of the water - or air to that matter.
Contact me, the minutes taken down will be interesting...

    • @macjim
      @macjim 3 роки тому

Ratna Devi Nadarajan , I think air travel will have been changed by this pandemic to the point where it will not return to the same levels as before the pandemic.
Already many staff members of the airline companies have bee paid off and will never get their jobs back but, we’re also seeing the demise of the huge aircraft those companies have used in the past too.
BA has with immediate effect removed their fleet of jumbo jets and, while they would have been scrapped anyway as they became uneconomical and life expired are not being replaced by newer large aircraft, many other companies will follow them too by doing the same.
Before the pandemic airlines were beginning too see that very large aircraft were too expensive to operate hence the creeping removal of the Airbus A380’s from their fleets.
So will they fill the middle seats... maybe in the long term but in the near future especially if we have not found a way to deal with COVID-19, no.
Effective vaccines and treatments to help people fight, and survive, when they contract it... will be needed before that happens but by then things will have changed drastically for the airlines.

From a mechanic point of view there accomplishing nothing because all the food and drink still and end up in the seat tracks and floor boards lav and galleys and the air there telling a half truth because the air coming off the compressor section is not filtered so lets say there a small oil leak that would end up in the cabin air look into it.

But in reality, I know many people, myself included who cannot wait to get back to travelling. I’m already planning Iceland in September. The pandemic is just a blip, a temporary hassle, but things will get back to how they where because it’s human nature to travel and explore and low cost airlines, like Ryanair/Southwest etc are not going to give up on the cheap flights, it’s the cornerstone of their business.

Before the pandemic, air travel was heading for a fall as it couldn’t continue to increase in passenger numbers, in flight numbers, and cheaper flight costs.
Environmentally, this ever increasing amount of flights couldn’t continue not only for environmental reason but, as the report showed, tourist hotspots were getting flooded by the amount tourists arriving, turning the locals against tourism as it had reached the point where the locals couldn’t live their lives.
Edinburgh, last year, was so bad that those who live there were up in arms because each season of events were merging into one where there was no respite from the vast amount of tourist... they were even getting ignored by the council and the organisers of the tourist events when they complained. They were even being made to apply for access to get into there homes to get past the security for the events!
Now, those same event organisers and local businesses wanted those snubbed locals to ‘help’ by using the restaurant’s, cafes, shops as the tourist were not able to come... as those businesses struggle due to the pandemic and the downturn caused by it. Can you blame the locals for not wanting to venture out and help save them? I can’t...
I’ve only just started to watch Aljazeera news and I’m impressed, especially with this report, I’ll certainly continue doing so...

      1. Only 2% of carbon emissions are from air travel.
      2. Edinburgh will be missing those tourists when the mass unemployment comes.

    • @macjim
      @macjim 3 роки тому

J J , 2% of 1 is a small amount yes, but 2% of 1,000 is a higher number. So if it’s 1% of off a major pollutant greenhouse gas (quantity unknown but probably a very high number, enough to do serious damage to our environment) then it’s a big number either way plus it’s being pumped out at a very high distance up in the atmosphere; almost directly to where the damage is being done.
Yes, we are already seeing unemployment numbers rising but that is also world wide due to the restrictions needed to combat this pandemic and this nasty virus.
What’s needed is for people to return to holidaying at home, a staycation to use a modern parlance, which would help those tourist industries survive and, help coastal towns too, many of which have suffered badly from a loss of tourist due to overseas holidays become ever more easier and cheaper to get too (the main reason why air travel skyrocketed after WW2)... we’re being encouraged now, by the Westminster and Scottish governments, to holiday within the uk to help our own tourism industries.
Many pressure and environmental groups have been for years now, and especially Extinction Rebellion in the last few years, saying that change is needed world wide before we go beyond the point of no return (if we haven’t already reached that point) to save our planet (and humanity too) from destruction from our environmental pollution.
This pandemic has shown, by the enforced reduction of our pollutants pumped out by every kind of means we have devised because we were all ordered to stay home; and as a result all around the world greenhouse-gases was seen to have reduce by a massive amount through satellite imagery.
People too were seeing the difference in air quality due to this reduction (and noise pollution too) and as a result have seen local governments deciding that cars should not return to the centre of towns and cities around the world and have been encouraging people to use every possible green means to get around (especially on foot or by cycling), some have even considered reducing the amount of tourism arriving at major site’s too.
Before the pandemic tourism was becoming a serious concern due to the damage being caused world wide, structurally and environmentally. It couldn’t continue to spiral upwards in numbers, this pandemic has helped to highlight the problem... the local people of Venice and Edinburgh are examples for one whom were finding it difficult to live their lives due to the huge influx of tourist.
Industries of all kinds have come and gone, to be replaced by the next one and while it may be an immediate problem for the tourist industries where many will inevitably lose their jobs, due to people not being able to afford air travel abroad, those hard hit local homegrown tourist industries will recover as people staycation... oh, and by the way, I’m in the tourist industry myself where my job is dependent on those tourist visiting.

Nah, we will be fine by mid 2021. I'm not saying that we are back to normal in that point but we will be moving just as fine. There were some improvement in terms of developing a vaccine (Russia) and if we have that by early 2021 then there is a chance of neutralizing the virus. Then comes herd immunity which is a little bit scary but it is what it is. Just continue observing health precautions like social distancing, face mask, frequent handwashing and the likes, we will be able to survive this pandemic. Inshallah!

in conclusion , we just have to follow and comply with the guidance of the authorities and embrace the personal hygiene protocols . I firmly believed after every journey the aircraft is fully disinfected even pre covid, to my dismay its not.

Flying needs a return to its hay day. Packing people in like sardines is a horrid practice and there should be FAA space minimums that ensures a quality of life on board for all passengers

It's extremely exaggerated that flying is completely different and horrible today, at least in Europe. Wearing a face mask in an airplane is nothing different from wearing a facemask in trains and busses, and we have gotten used to it. Flight attendants didn't wear full protective gear. As an extra document I only needed a declaration of health on the airports I took off from last week, and on one of the airports I didn't even need to show it.

+That is life folks, nothing is guaranteed nothing at all total mystery for every person on this planet. In fact, everything will bring some sort of repercussions, because of the pandemic. But we will learn how to servive and get use to it, that will be the normal through time. Just smile and say out loud I can do this and win.

America made a huge mistake by using cars and building huge airports and investing little in trains. What people are now realizing is that airports bring down property values and ruin the quality of life in the surrounding area. No one wants to live close to an airport or a flight path because of the noise. People fly from city to city which creates traffic jams around the airports and is inefficient. High speed trains should have been developed in American but were stopped by the oil industry lobbyists. And it is expensive to own a car or flying, a further insult to poor people. Also, airports and planes are the perfect vectors for transmitting diseases. Airport security trays carry more germs than toilets, one study found.

There is no need to wonder, you can see it already: unemployment, homelessness, long queues in front of food charities.
