    Hov has admitted more than once that he has foregone his extreme
    Lyricism in favour of hits and $$ tho. So idk why ppl are surprised.
    "If skills sold, truth be told, I'd probably be / Lyrically Talib Kweli / Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense / But I did 5 mill' - I ain't been rhyming like Common since" - Moment of Clarity
    "I went from the favorite / To the most hated / But would you rather be underpaid or overrated? / Moral victories is for minor league coaches / And Ye already told you we major you cockroaches / Show me where boats is / Ferrari Testsrossas" - So Appalled
    So he isn't trying to be the best lyricist. He's trying to be the biggest icon in rap, with a good balance of every aspect of his game to make that $$$

      @thejohnykilroy 10 років тому +1

      took the words outta my mouth. Just hasn't made anything good since black album. He spent 5+ years comparing himself to Frank Lucas, and MJ in every song. His last good verse was on food and liquor.

    • @NICKEYBLACK35
      @NICKEYBLACK35 10 років тому +8

      But what you quoted were hot lines. Even if Jay wants to be iconic, He still has a good balance of incredible bars. Even when he stated " I'm just a hustler disguised as a rapper/ in fact you can't put this hustle inside of a wrapper/rapper" was still dope. I will admit that Jay got real lazy on his last album, but he dropped some real SHIT on that WE MADE IT track. He's not corny. He's actually one of the best to do it. Now 50 use to be insane with lyrics, but not anymore. I can see Pap saying that about Fifty, but not Jay.

    • @Kevo6492
      @Kevo6492 10 років тому +3

      But then you are stating that he is purposefully lowering his lyrical ability. So if Papoose is coming at Jay with his all but Jay is holding back, is it a true fight? Jay isn't using his full ability. Also at the end of the day who is on our minds more? Jay-Z or Papoose? Jay-Z has certified classics under his belt. What does Papoose have? I think Pap is just being bitter and throwing shots.

      No disrespect to Pap, but until he has a legacy and level of relevance, song-writing skills, consistency, production value, and great albums, singles, and countless quotables like Jay does...Then what's the point of being super lyrical when you're not the superior comprehensive artist??? Jay'z got lyricism he just doesn't go all out and his focus is on being quotable...a Emcee is for Master of Ceremonies, it focuses on moving the crowd and if Jay Z can do it while rapping simply and he's still using flow, delivery, multi-syllabic rhyiming, punch-line, word play, etc, then I believe in most people's opinion I think Papoose is the one on a loosing battle...

      I know what he means, from a more obvious and conventional perspective when it comes to competitive Emcee lyrics, Pap is more lyrical...But in terms of songwriting, Jay is more lyrical and there is a big difference..Jay is more original even, Pap is way too derivative of Big L....Jay is more quotable, I just mean as a comprehensive and cohesive artist Jay is better in general..I'm not talking about marketing, I'm just talking about music...And marketing wise even Jay is where he's at cause of himself, Dame Dash, and Def Jam after they heard Reasonable Doubt, not anything to do with BIG

    • @playboyjla
      @playboyjla 10 років тому +3

      That's a good explanation. However, is JAY Z not on Papoose's technical level because he can't be, or because he doesn't want to be. JAY Z loves power and money, so flowing the way Papoose does isn't going to give JAY what he ultimately wants. JAY is every bit as lyrical as Pap, but at this point, JAY Z just doesn't care to be overly technical. All he wants to do is make good songs that a ton of people will like. It's a business strategy.
      Personally, I think Papoose is ill, but just because he can flow doesn't mean he can make great songs. I totally get what you're saying though.

      Saying his worse than Vanilla Ice is just reaching. Jay-Z's newer stuff may not be that great, but he was a beast in his prime. Jay-Z did not always suck and he proves it on his albums like Reasonable Doubt, In My Lifetime, Vol.1, The Blueprint, half of The Blueprint 2, The Black Album, American Gangster, etc. Vanilla Ice has never made a song as good as Meet the Parents, D'Evils, Regrets, Can I Live, No Hook, Renegade, 99 Problems, and Where I'm From just to name a few. Whether you like him or not is your opinion, but you can't possibly say that Jay-Z sucks if you heard any of these songs. Papoose is nice and arguably better than Jay-Z lyrically, but he can't write a song to save his life.

      Yes, Ether was a great diss, but it was mostly insults. Jay-Z hit him with facts on Takeover. While I didn't agree with some of his points and I do think Nas is better overall, you could tell he took his time with it and wanted to hit Nas where it hurt and it only took one verse. The reason he blew up was because he had the perfect balance. He was a great lyricist and a great songwriter and those two sometimes don't mesh very well.

    As a big fan of Tupac, considering him one of the goats w/ major respect for his catalog and contributions to hip hop; to say that his lyrical depth is deeper then Jay Z is shade. All of the goats do something diff. for me, with pac it was his energy passion and emotion mixed with poetry. He never spit bars that I had to research, replay multiple times to comprehend or make the twisted face you do when hearing flawless lyricism. I get that with Jay (Old Jay at least). Jay and Big styles were very similar as well as Big Daddy Kane who they were both influenced by. So to put Kane n Big on the list as well as Pac and no Jay is shade to me, but everyone entitled to opinions.

      Hey Rod, you bring up some good points and I do agree with much of what you said. However, I think you can expand the category of lyrical depth a bit, and include Pac's poetic influence/style. While I agree that a lot of that was related to his passion and emotion, he also used sophisticated English techniques that many poets use. Things like Alliteration are constantly being used and although the lyrics are simplistic and don't make you rewind, the delivery is carefully crafted. "Picture Perfection Pursuing Paper with a Passion...". I'm not really a big poetry or English fan but I do appreciate the artistry that he approached many of his songs with. I'm not saying other artists don't have poetic style (Papoose surely does) but their songs likely aren't as packed with it, as Pac's were. I just thought I'd contribute that food for thought, as I think 2Pac is overrated on many levels but underrated in lyricism, considering many of his songs could be read as poems. "If I die tonight" by 2Pac is a great example of what I mentioned, very simple song but full of substance. One love all, peace.

      tochiRTA yea I agree. rap feel off in the mid-80s when lyrics where brought to the forefront. smh what was krs1, public enemy, nas, kool g rap thinking when they started using their brains? we shouldve keep the lyrics "hippity hoppity" like rappers delight. macklemore, Kendrick, drake, jcole, kanye, etc are wasting their time creating lyrics, selling records, making money, winning grammys. perhaps they should be more like Trinidad james, migos, & chief keef and have one hit then fade away. I TOTALLY agree with you but it still doesn't change the fact that pap is more lyrical than jayz currently is. lol you really think lyricism is using big words?

I listened to him because he had the most bars, that's what I was into at that time; I was 15. bitches used to tell me "hes nice but he just rap tooooo long" its not really a diss, jayz dumbed down purposely. he said it on the black album

    Papoose is definitely a superior MC; however his over confidence keeps him from polishing up the areas that he needs work in. Jay-Z is the best, not because he the best lyricist, but because he knows how to translate his well balance of skills into success. Something Papoose has yet to do.

      Well to be fair, Kanye reps Chicago, and he has 21 Grammys, which is by far the most of any rapper, and he is one of the biggest international music stars in the world. Eminem reps Detroit, and he is the highest selling rap artist of the last 10 years. Drake is on top right now and he's from Toronto, Canada, which sounds crazy to even say! You don't have to be from NY to dominate.
      There are plenty of other rappers from NY that don't come close to JAY Z's level. When it comes down to it, JAY knows how to make songs that people want to hear. He has been very consistent at dropping dope music since he started in '96.

      @playboyjla 10 років тому

      You don't pay attention very well. I mentioned all those other dudes to show that you don't have to be from NY to have a big following and a lot of success and record sales.
      Papoose is from NY, so why isn't he as successful as JAY Z?
      A million other cats are from NY, so why aren't they tearing the charts up?
      Face it; JAY Z just knows what he's doing. PERIOD!

      Kanye is hot because Jay gave him his pass. Thats why we started to listen to him. Jay made kanye successful. Eminem as well. He is successful because of Dre. The list goes on. These guys from the with great careers that you named, have had the easy way into the game. No hustling and grinding. If dre had a mouse that lived in his basement and he said he had skills, then we would buy the mouse album. lol

    • @playboyjla
      @playboyjla 10 років тому +1

      I hear what you trying to say homie, but check this out. Memphis Bleek was under JAY Z and he didn't do anything impressive, and JAY really wanted him to do well.
      Kanye is just a beast. The first time I heard Kanye, I had no idea that he was associated with Roc-a-Fella. Ye made JAY Z pay attention to him because his material was too hot.
      Dr. Dre just has an ear for talent. He knows if an artist has what it takes to be successful. That's why Dre doesn't work with a lot of artists. He waits until he finds someone who will make a big impact.
      For example; Kendrick is a hot lyricist, who just happens to be from Compton, CA. Dre recognized a golden opportunity to work with a monster artist from his hometown.
      Bottom line is this; if you're not hot enough on your own, it won't matter who you're affiliated with. Music fans will eventually figure out that you're wack.

    • @vinylvids2011
      @vinylvids2011 10 років тому

      Ok, I agree with Jay having a great catalog, but I won't go as far as to say lyrically unmatched. His earlier material is the stuff of legend but his latest music is average at best form a lyrical standpoint. Jay-Z doesn't really care about rapping to be the best anymore. Every move he makes is a calculated business move that sets him up to make another move which is brilliant considering that he doesn't have a formal education, but on the point of lyricism he just doesn't seem to care anymore
